On the one hand, it is absolutely terrible in nearly every conceivable way. On the other, I can't truly hate it because it is a glorious trainwreck; a hyper-distillation of late 2000s club rap cliches by way of microtonal autotune that collapses into something accidentally avant-garde. This is my first time ever listening to a Travis Scott album and it's... interesting. For an artist as mainstream as he is I really appreciate how many risks were taken with the production, with the dark, psychedelic sound and frequent beat changes definitely living up to the hype. UTOPIA is at its best on tracks like MY EYES, where Travis patiently builds tension with beautifully-muffled synths before unleashing a woozy, cloud rap banger.
