Heart-crushing. Some of the best lyrics and most heartfelt sounds I’ve heard in a long time.
He gave Pop 2 a 7 and this a decent to strong 9? What a weird take. I genuinely thought that this project had its fair share of enjoyable pop songs and I agree to an extent with his opinions, but Pop 2 is far more consistent effort in my opinion. To each their own, I guess but I think he may have been a little too generous honestly.
Holy shit. Was not expecting such a huge difference of quality between this track and the last one. My biggest problem with the last track was the production. Even though it was an enjoyable surf gothic rock fusion, the vocals really stood bare in the context of the rest of the song. This song does everything a lot better. Production is fantastic—the noise builds up really well into an explosive ending alongside the echoing vocals that drift alongside the hard-hitting riffs and brooding ... read more
A smooth follow-up to the last song. Loving the production on here, especially the beat. Q-tip can do no wrong. The song doesn’t necessarily hook me as much as some of Danny’s other songs, but nonetheless it’s a fun song with no particular flaws that come to mind.

While this album is filled with varied and well-executed directions in experimental hip hop production that really make this album stand out, it has its fair share of faults. Personally, I’m not really a big fan of Veteran even though I see the appealing aspects of that project and acknowledge its uniqueness. I think the main problem with this album is that it doesn’t necessarily sound unfinished—rather, the progressions on this album and many of the individual songs are ... read more
I really wish I could enjoy this as much as many other users... and as much as I like some of the production on here and the effort it makes to be unique-sounding, a lot of it just really boring or obnoxious to me. It’s has its fair share of highs but also fails to be striking all the way through. And frankly, I don’t think there’s anything truly ground-breaking about this. I’ve been liking his recent singles though, so maybe his next project I’ll enjoy more ... read more
Edit: honestly I’m just loving this more and more with every listen. The climaxing vocals near the end, the lyrics, the atmosphere—everything about this song just hooks me right in. It’s so gorgeous. I’m also really excited for the new album in terms of what it’s aiming for conceptually judging by the cover and changing words in the video for this song reveal and musically.

Stunning. Atmospheric, poetic, engaging as hell, and certainly one hell ... read more
I can appreciate the artistry behind this album, but this was literally just a clusterfuck of obnoxious noisy instrumentation. If you’re into the “avant-garde” and feel sorry for those who can’t “get” this album, then good for you. Personally, I was more annoyed by this than anything.
Fantano may have been a little too harsh on this song, but I’m personally not too into it either. It just sounds like a run-of-the-mill pop song. Vocals have their good moments, but I hate the mixing when he’s trying to maintain the trailing ends of some parts in the chorus. It sounds really forced and unnatural. Nothing otherwise stands out to me.
I wouldn’t have expected in a million years to enjoy this album more than the new Tool record, yet here we are.
Is it really their best? This album just felt... really dry to me. Devoid of anything unique, redundant in their staple sounds, formulaic, lacking in any elements that stand out to me upfront. I just felt underwhelmed throughout. Certain songs felt longer than they needed to be and I didn’t get the same ferocious instrumentation and vocal presence that made Ænima such a good album. Not riding the hype train for this one.
I always find myself returning to this. At first, it was difficult. It’s one of the more off-putting albums to come out of the IDM genre, but after returning to it a lot I just find myself constantly engaged with the soundscapes in this project and the phenomenal production.
I mean, I get how influential this album must have been and it certainly has its fair share of likable traits. Repetition is fine in music as long as it’s executed properly. But sometimes, this album becomes overly redundant in sound and fails to grasp my attention all the way.
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is by far the more enjoyable jazz essential imo.
I really wish I could love this project as much as everyone else. I love the directions of sound taken in this album and instrumentally it’s brutal. But Gira’s vocals.... they’re just wayyy too monotonous on many of the tracks on here and I find myself getting bored really easy. It lacks the same fierce edge displayed on an album like To Be Kind it the soft vocals on the Angels of Light project.
