so boring i didnt even bother to capitalize letters or add punctuation to this review
Smoking an Unfiltered Cigarette: the album
Just really boring and uneventful, most of the beats on here feel like DJ Khaled hand-me-downs and ultimately the pointless fast rapping paired with mgk's corny bars and delivery wore me down. That being said, I did enjoy the opening track well enough, and there were some successful emotional moments during the last couple songs that hit decently well, even if they came off as lacking in the originality department. Still an improvement over everything I've heard from him after this ... read more
"GUM" is a pretty strange project from one of the most enigmatic figures in underground hip hop, mr. Cities Aviv. The only deep familiarity I have with him and his music is the “Black Pleasure” mixtape that got me immediately hooked after my initial listen, with its fair share of oddities blended with some of the best experimental hip hop you’re likely to find. Until now, I’ve been sitting on my hands in regards to moving forward with Aviv’s other ... read more
I'm more of a fan of the drumming above anything else on here, granted I do enjoy plenty of points on "In Rainbows" well enough, it just isn't my favorite thing ever like many people may regard it as. Still, I completely understand and respect why people value it so much, and maybe another spin will improve my stance on it as a whole. Only time will tell really, but as is, this record is an all-encompassing listen that does justice to their sound and paints a really pretty ... read more
Solid ass post-hardcore album with a great sense of progression and flow between each track! They're seemingly not afraid to experiment with weirder sonic ideas, especially deeper into the tracklist, and you can definitely see their risks paying off most of the time thoughout. A seemingly underrated project for sure, might need to check more of these guys out in the future.
Edit: Grew off me a bit, still enjoy it well enough though.
Guys this MIGHT be better than scrapyard
One of the most inexplicably charismatic combinations of styles you're likely to hear this year, "BAD CAMEO" sees lil boat reclaiming the magic of his previous album by linking up with somewhat unlikely collaborator James Blake. I mean seeing Blake's proximity to other rappers such as Jpegmafia and Travis Scott, I guess you could potentially see this as a divergent ... read more
About a week ago, I made a remark in the comments of this album that said, and I quote: "if this sucks im killing myself". A bit hasty playing with my life considering the subject matter made "Lasers" (lmao gottem) but the singles imbued me with enough confidence to put everything on the line. And thankfully, I get to live another day, as Lupe's newest outing with "Samurai" is an uber-consistent rap outing that makes a mountain out of its half hour in the sun. ... read more
AND THE 2024 OFFICIAL AOTY OUTTA POCKET BAR OF THE YEAR GOES TO: "Motherfuckers be havin that dog in 'em but it's a poodle (woof), Motherfuckers be havin that dog in 'em but it's another dog raping 'em" like wtf was he smoking when he jotted that down in the ol' notebook? Honestly I can see why he doesn't want genius posting his lyrics lol
ANYWAYYY, this album does its job in being a good rap album. Really top notch in consistency and creativity. ... read more
Edit: HOLY MOLY 200 SCHMECKLES THANKS MUCH EVERYONE!
For a pile of sludge, the consistency here is top notch! Nasty riffs and muddy vocals aplenty, blending the line between technical and straight grime-filled hysteria. An achievement for the genre without a doubt!
Sure, "Adventure" might not have that timeless quality of Television's first outing, but it's still a solid album that deserves more recognition, even if it does live in the wide shadow cast by "Marquee Moon".
Welp, whaddaya know, looks like I hit obscure oddity bedrock during my albumoftheyear.org 3 am deep dive. While I'm down here, I might as well enjoy this calming pocket of electronic breeze I found submerged near the bottom.
this shit hits different during pride month
no but like seriously why is this one of the most off-the-wall projects i've heard in a minute?
Personally, I prefer last year's wonderfully pink "HELLMODE" to what's widely considered as Rosenstock's magnum opus "WORRY.", but I can definitely understand how one would enjoy this more. It pretty much comes down to preference, alongside some structural differences, that place this one at a fairly close second place for me. That said, this record's still a blast of a time, especially the first 6 tracks or so. I feel as if the record peaks a bit too ... read more
What a serene listening experience, first go around went well enough but I'm sure my opinion on "The Magnolia Electric Co." will appreciate with time. It begins and bookends perfectly, with some really sweet buildups and moments throughout the remaining runtime. Bonus tracks were nice, vocals were great, overall a positive vibe that's sure to blossom into something special.
Fuck it, rap aoty and there's no contest
Edit: okay Mach was pretty good but this still reigns π₯π₯π₯
Edit 2: nah lupe made me see the messiah the reign is over πππ
Edit 3: almost forgot to mention PEGGYY
I ONLY LISTENED TO THE VOICEMAILS π₯π₯π₯π₯

I hope you're okay DudeCentral, you made one hell of an album and I'm sorry for your loss.
