Against All Logic - 2012 - 2017
91

I was dancing and snapping my fingers until they hurt throughout the whole thing! Nicolas Jarr’s newest project is groovy as hell! The basslines are killer, the beats are oh-so pleasing to the ears and the sample work is absolutely astonishing! Overall, this is one of the most fun house records I’ve heard in a while!

Fav Tracks: I Never Dream, Know You, Flash in the Pan, This Old House Is All I Have, Now U Got Me Hooked, Cityfade, Some Kind of Game, You Are Going to Love Me and ... read more

Amnesia Scanner - Another Life
89

“Another Life” is an assault on the senses. But I mean that in such a good way! I mean, seriously! The production is fucking amazing! It’s abrasive while also getting away with being danceable and catchy! While it may have turned off some people at first listen, I still highly recommend this!

Fav Tracks: AS Another Life, AS A.W.O.L, AS Faceless, AS Too Wrong, AS Unlinear, AS Chaos, AS Symmetribal

Exceptional

Yves Tumor - Safe in the Hands of Love
95

“Safe In The Hands of Love” is not just an amazing electronic album. It’s a new, exciting and majestic being made from other genres combined! A masterpiece formed from someone who pushes their label’s already pushed boundaries into a world where freedom and emotion have won a long-lasting war between oppression and lack of creativity! Yves, you have done wonders with just one album! How?

Paul McCartney - Egypt Station
55

While “Egypt Station” is a pretty fun and well-produced record in some spots, Paul McCartney is trying too hard to act young and hip to please a younger demographic. Like, that’s something you SHOULDN’T do for a late career record.

Fav Tracks: I Don’t Know, Caesar Rock, Come On To Me, Despite Repeated Warnings, Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link, Dominoes, Back In Brazil

Least Fav Tracks: Fuh You, Hand In Hand

Okay

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
99

“The Fragile” feels like another concept album split into two separate parts, except it’s more focused on Trent’s problems more than another character’s. Like “The Downward Spiral”, “The Fragile” feels increasingly like a descent into madness as the album goes on both lyrically, vocally and instrumentally (maybe even more!). This album also feels more abstract than the previous records. Making it one of NIN’s most accomplished ... read more

Anna Calvi - Hunter
84

That voice! Holy hell it’s so sensual my ears are being fucked in pleasure by the music... wait, what? Anyway, the rest of Anna Calvi’s new album is great with some good writing, beautiful hooks and a great range of emotion.

Fav Tracks: Hunter, Chain, Alpha, As a Man, Swimming Pool, Don’t Beat the Girl out of My Boy

Least Fav Track: Away

Great

IDLES - Joy as an Act of Resistance.
99

Dealing with mental health, toxic masculinity, immigration and even the death of Joe’s daughter, “Joy as an Act of Resistance” is a smart, brilliantly written and aggressive punk album that hooked me with every fucking second!

Fav Tracks: Samaritans, Danny Nedelko, Colossus, Never Fight a Man With a Perm, June, Gram Rock, Love Song, Great, I'm Scum

Least Fav Track: NOPE

POINTS TO GRYFFINDOR!!!

Troye Sivan - Bloom
83

It may chase a few trends, but it more than makes up for it with great songwriting and beautiful production. All making for one cohesive and powerful pop album.

Plus it's gay! Not that it adds to the overall experience or anything. Just pointing it out. ;)

Fav Tracks: The Good Side, Seventeen, Bloom, My! My! My!, Animal, Postcard

Least Fav Track: Dance To This

Daft Punk - Homework
84

An EDM classic, Daft Punk’s debut, “Homework” is groovy as all hell with plenty of playful, funky sounds while also experimenting with different genres. It can feel a bit filler-y and bloated at times, though.

Fav Tracks: Revolution 909, Da Funk, Around The World, Alive, High Fidelity, Rollin' & Scratchin', Burnin', Phoenix, Indo Silver Club

Least Fav Track: Oh Yeah

AJR - The Click
14

AJR is a band who’s desperate to be on the radio and you can REALLY tell here. “The Click” is probably one of the worst and most cliche millennial pop albums in recent memory. You cannot listen to this album without hearing an OH-WOAH (“Three-Thirty”), a bad EDM beat drop (“Drama”) or a horribly-written pop culture reference (“Netflix Trip”).

Interpol’s latest project has some solid instrumentation and there’s a quite a few highlights. Though it does feel like your standard indie record.

Least Fav Track: Party’s Over

Fall Out Boy - Lake Effect Kid

While Super Fade is very messy and a little over-sung, the other two tracks are a surprising return to form for Fall Out Boy! Nice job, Patrick!

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
100

“The Downward Spiral” contains one of the most fucked up and fully realized concepts to ever grace an audio recording! The album goes through “The Downward Spiral” of a man who’s brutally fucking up his own life until he eventually kills himself. It’s all told through abrasive instrumentation and nihilistic lyrics, all in the usual NIN fashion! But what really sells this record is how incredibly well this held up. The amount of terrifying sonic detail Trent ... read more

Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
89

While Coheed and Cambria’s debut album set up the whole narrative, they made sure that “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3” was epic enough to support a better paced part of the story. The result is an ambitious concept album that builds upon its predecessor and adds longer lengths, groovier instrumentation, catchier melodies and all-around better writing.

Osees - Smote Reverser
78

“Smote Reverser” is a very abrasive album with a lot of catchy riffs and some 70s style flair with it. Though tracks like “Anthemic Aggressor” do drag a little bit too much.

Fav Tracks: Abysmal Urn, Sentient Oona, C, Overthrown, Enrique El Cobrador, Moon Bog

Least Fav Track: Anthemic Aggressor

Mitski - Be the Cowboy
90

Mitski is a unique songwriter who should be dedicated and remembered for her craft. The lyrics, melodies and production are so powerful on “Be The Cowboy” that it strikes an emotional chord with almost every song. It’s short but it’s definitely worth it. I’m not gonna spoil much.

Animal Collective - Tangerine Reef
40

Made as an admittedly ambitious audiovisual experience, “Tangerine Reef” is sometimes beautiful and most of the time pointless and frustrating throughout its 52-minute runtime. I doubt that even the most hardcore Animal Collective fans will find anything of value here.

Fav Tracks: Jake And Me, Hair Cutter, Palythoa, Buxom

Least Fav Tracks: Hip Sponge, Buffalo Tomato, Coral Realization, Airpipe (To A New Transition), Coral By Numbers

Tame Impala - Lonerism
97

I love the psychedelic genre so much. The soundplay, the sonic layers, the multitude of effects at play, it's the boundaries of audio being pushed further and further. Tame Impala's Kevin Parker knocks that out of the park and then some on "Lonerism". This entire album was recorded by just one person, but it's kind of hard to tell since he's so damn good at every instrument here. The mix is also top notch, with the drums packing an unbelievable amount of punch, the incredible ... read more

Harry Styles - Harry Styles
72

Harry Styles’ debut album is more enjoyable than it has any right to be. Decent songwriting, beautiful production and a great dose of rock inspiration on his sleeve. There are a few blunders, though, and the songwriting could still use work.

Fav Tracks: Sign of the Times, Kiwi, Sweet Creature, Only Angel, Two Ghosts

MGMT - MGMT
68

MGMT’s self-titled album definitely has the experimentation, wit, humor and ingenuity the duo is known for and the absurdity has been turned up to 11. But this album suffers from being a mess of ideas and the fuzzy, compressed sound goes against its many highlights.

Fav Tracks: Alien Days, Your Life Is a Lie, Mystery Disease, Plenty of Girls In The Sea, Cool Song No. 2
