Nulled of seemingly anything even remotely sane, Bottomless Pit lives up to its name by placing you in an endless abyss of noise that seems to drag 39 minutes on extremely heavily. It's amazing.
Although Bottomless Pit is great, it doesn't really grab you like The Money Store or Exmilitary due to some of the tracks feeling kind of bare-bones for Death Grips. Nonetheless, bangers accompany the entire experience relentlessly despite some duds being snuck in. It's hard to not get completely ... read more
This was actually the first EP that I ever listened to, and it's utterly amazing. There's no bad song and it stays consistent and banger-filled all throughout. Tkay switches her sound and style so many times that she becomes totally unpredictable, and it's from this unpredictability that generates the hype and enjoyment from the album for me personally.
The only bad thing about this EP is the forgetful nature of some tracks, since they blend slightly together. PB Jam, You Sad and Don't Call ... read more
Bandana takes a few tracks to kick into gear, but when it finally shifts into its grand and realised design, it only furthers the chemistry and magic that comes from the collaboration of Freddie and Madlib. Despite a few moments of staleness with aspects such as disjointed or weird beats or strange interludes that are a Madlib guarantee on any album, Bandana is still great. But it's not as good as Piñata.
The vocals just feel powerful with gangster lyrics bursting at the seams, and at ... read more
I didn't watch Filthy Frank that much when I was younger (when compared to how much I watched iDubbz and Maxmoefoe), but it still hurt when I saw him step away from YouTube. It still feels weird for Joji to be in the spot he is, but I think pretty much everyone loves Joji in general and is massively proud of him. But his music? Well, it's slightly more divisive. Judging by this project he clearly has a distinct style and has the capacity to make great songs, it just feels a little samey and ... read more
RTJ4 is the best Run The Jewels album. I would say even better than RTJ2, because even though 2 has the better songs, as a project it lacks more in terms of consistency. But with 4, man... El-P and Killer Mike absolutely go HAM, obliterating politics, social injustices and promoting themselves like Greek Gods all in less than 40 minutes. This is the album we needed in 2020, and an album that we'll need for a few more years until things start to change for the better.
The hyper duo builds up an ... read more
I keep forgetting about this album, which makes me go back to it and go 'Yeah, that was good.' and then I repeat the cycle over and over. Tis a good album, and an album that shines a light on being gay in a greatly positive way, accompanied by some damn good sounds coming from Kevin.
I love the emotion and tonal journey that ARIZONA BABY goes through, as it goes from songs like Joyride being an absolute hype creator that really gets the mood going to Peach which is a much softer and more ... read more
Atrocity Exhibition sounds like you've been drugged up, chucked into a river, eventually woken up by being punched in the face, being punched in the face even more, drugged up even more and then put into an eternally twisted depression. I love it. It's loud, abrasive and completely enveloped in a hangover induced oblivion of sadness and evil.
Hearing the opening distressing call of "I'm sweating like I'm in a rave, been in this room bout three days" immediately plants you in a ... read more
2020 sucked for pretty much every reason imaginable, but music in my opinion was one of the stark saving points of 2020. Music remained as the easiest option for artists to express their thoughts, views and feelings about the world and the state it was in. In my opinion, Anime, Trauma and Divorce is the quintessential quarantine album, as it manages to powerfully and personally go through the emotions that Mike has felt recently. And yes I know this album is more focused about the events of his ... read more
First EP review!
The only thing I've heard from Peggy prior to hearing this is Veteran. Veteran took me a hell of a long time to get into before I actually started enjoying it, mainly due to its extremely glitchy and out there aesthetic. But EP2! seems to go down a much simpler route. I don't know if the prior EP sounds similar to this one, but from this all I can say is that I don't prefer this more simple approach from .jpeg, but it's still at least a somewhat mildly interesting sit ... read more
This is my 50th review! I've only been on AOTY for a month now but from the short time that I've been here, I've seen some great reviews and seen the heart of an active and loving community. I think my favourite thing that this site has done so far is completely shame Sia for her disrespectful actions. The way in which people actively spoke out against her and how she was horrifically ableist was eye opening, and the way in which everyone seemed to join the cause by either telling their own ... read more
Circles is some tough shit, let's be straight. It really is unbelievable how much Mac talked about life itself before he sadly lost it, and those thoughts of life are implemented into Circles beautifully. There's not a single word that can accurately describe Circles, as its an album that differs greatly from Mac's previous styles and offers a uniqueness that is one of a kind, helped by its posthumous status that elevates its emotional potency.
First of all, the production on this album is ... read more
This is the first album that I've listened to from 2021! It took a while for me to listen to one since there isn't a lot of prominent releases at the moment, but I finally decided to try out TYRON. And... TYRON is a load of meh. It feels pretty uninspired and monotonous with samey trap beats that claim the creativity of potentially interesting concepts, such as on songs like push and feel away. I respect slowthai for being a British rapper that's making it big since the UK doesn't have many big ... read more
Punisher is like a story book being slowly unfolded through gentle bursts of music, with Bridgers telling several stories that clearly feel emotional and intimate. It makes for an enticing listening that'll probably stick with you for a little while after hearing it.
As said before, this album feels more like a collection of stories collected together into an LP format, and she seems to double down on a specific structure that is distinctively hers. It's generally a soft sounding album that ... read more
On Ventura, Paak steps slightly away from his normal rapping and hip hop influences and focuses on a more neo-soul aesthetic, and it definitely pays off. Although it's not as solid as his other releases, Ventura still has Anderson's classic smooth and sensual sound that seems effortless to pull off.
Lavish tunes like Come Home, Make It Better and What Can We Do? ensure Paak's usual R&B and neo-soul qualities stay intact, but Andy still does his classic genre mashing that he's renowned for, ... read more
Chilled, ethereal and transcending, Alfredo is a work of art. Although Gibbs and The Alchemist don't do anything out of the ordinary, they simply just make a solid record that remains as one of 2020's top hip hop albums, and one of my favourites of last year too.
Every feature fits the album's sound really well, and the instrumentals are all mellowed out and stripped down yet diverse, and as always Freddie spits bars upon bars. Something To Rap About, 1985 and Baby $hit are all clearly linked ... read more
I vividly remember how I finally managed to get into The Money Store. I listened to Get Got, hated it. I listened to Get Got again, I still hated it. I listened to Get Got again again, I still still hated it. I listened to Get Got again again again, loved it, listened to the entire album and immediately considered it to be one of my favourite albums of all time. I don't know what the hell this album is or what it does, but my GOD it is a god damn masterpiece.
No other album I've ever heard ... read more
Acid Rap is the drugged up mixtape that rocket launched Chance's career, and to me I think I prefer this as an overall album more than Colouring Book. I think I prefer Colouring Book's individual songs more but Acid Rap just feels more cohesive, lively and individualistic with Chance's unique style that mixes together drugs, gospel, jazz, drugs, rap, hip hop and more drugs.
I genuinely don't think I've ever heard an artists adlib being used this much in an overall album, but I've grown ... read more
Blonde. Everything has been said already about this album, so I guess I'll just add on to the praising of it. It's dreamy, soft, yet at times chaotic, emotional and splattered with Frank's spontaneous nature. I will admit though, I'm much more of a Channel Orange guy myself, but that's not to say that Blonde isn't a great album.
One thing that I will admit is that I don't think the album hit me as hard emotionally as many others feel like it's done for them. Some of the more emotional and ... read more
The infamous Mr Ocean's journey into claiming the hearts of everyone started most prominently with Channel Orange, an album that has stood the test of time and has proved to be one of the greatest R&B projects possibly of all time. I hold a soft spot for this album as one of the first non directly rap or hip hop albums I ever listened to. Although I've definitely overplayed this thing way too much, I still find myself loving it.
The theme of love drives Channel Orange, and it drives it ... read more
