DaBaby - GHETTO SUPERSTAR: (THE INTRO)

This thing sounds like you are inside a waterlogged NES cartridge with everything glitching around you.

The worst feeling after listening this is knowing it was released in 2003 and I could have been listening to this my whole life. I am happy nonetheless that I have at least brought myself to listen to it now. This thing leans mostly into serene soundscapes especially in the moments in dials in more of its shoegaze flavor. There are however moments sprinkled in where things get turned up to a ... read more

Why does th-you know what? I am going to stop asking questions.

FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
98

I need to stop being dense and just listen to stuff I know I will like when I get suggested it. I got suggested to listen to FKA twigs like two or three years ago and never gave it the light of day outside of the single "killer" till today. I really loved what I was hearing hear and immediately went back for a second listen after my first. I can't really think much more at the moment other than calling this stunning and beautiful.

Cts Luh Wick - First Day Out
40

Did he just say, "I been suckin on my peepee?"

Edit 55 -> 40 : I stand corrected.... He said "Op Bitch suckin on my peepee." I liked it more the other way.

Natalie Red - Places

Had this one sitting in my liked songs for a while from the song Nameless and was hoping to find a more thorough discography but found mostly just singles and EP's. Ultimately, this EP just felt like a scattered collection of dance pop ideas and outside of the song mentioned previously I wasn't super blown away by much here. It's cute though!

Mk.gee - Two Star & The Dream Police

Edit 12/24/24 76 -> 82: While re-listening to this album I thought I would have a lot more to add here, but really I just find myself able to fall into the album a little bit more than the first time listening to it. Yeah it has its moment of simplicity, which I don't really mind, but you also have moment of flair that keep the record entertaining. Not the daily listening for the year, but if I catch myself feeling a little melancholic this record will hit the spot.

Farrah Abraham - My Teenage Dream Ended
20

It's not entirely terrible, I mean like the production is pretty ahead of it's time. Lyrically pretty straight to the gut. It's the vocals though man, I really wonder if it is intentional.

Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
75

The shirt on this album cover would later go on to cause psychological damage to the male listeners that they would never expect. No, I will not be explaining this any further....

So what sets Yellowcard apart from the rest of the pop-punk in its era? Well that's simple silly! It's the violin. Unironically I do believe the violin is what pushes a good handful of these songs into higher praise. Instrumentally you aren't getting anything too many blowing here, and vocally I don't even find ... read more

Gumbi looking like he seen some shit....

This guy makes some beats and my buddy likes him. I think I like him too. This tape is a collection of some nice old timey feeling instrumentals. Y'know the shit Earl would rap over.

C'mon girl open up the door....

Caroline Polachek - Starburned and Unkissed
92

New Caroline o_O

Trying my best to be reserved with the score but I wouldn't be shocked if it goes to the big 100 when/if placed on a record. Everything Caroline has touched as a solo artist has really been magic to my ears. I loved how the singles leading up to Desire ended up all being a little bit different and I sure hope this continues with what Caroline has cooking up now.

YOASOBI - THE BOOK
69

Shoutout Kevin!

He got me to listen to another J-pop album that was much more up my alley. Everything is super sweet and clean here. I see Ymer noting that the music sounds a bit like an anime opening, but I would actually wager that is sounds a bit more like the closer. I think what ultimately sold me on this project was the vocal tone and instrumental sounds being much more close and pairing nicely together.

TOZ - TO my new friends
38

To be clear, I am not calling this project bad. I just didn't really enjoy it as a whole. I found myself enjoying little elements like the glass clacking on NU SHOES, the digital and bubbly instrumental of Hello to my world, or the general upbeat nature to UNIVERSE.

HyunA - Attitude
57

Each day I get closer to developing my enjoyment for K-pop with this record making a nice push in the right direction!

When I initially started the project with the opener, Attitude, I was a little concerned I would be underwhelmed on this project as I felt there was a certain degree of charisma for sure, but instrumentally it didn't feel very standout. Thankfully, I was taken back with the following track Q&A being a slightly bubblegum flavored piece of Korean dance pop. Continuing with ... read more

Roar - Knives For Aries

✅ Album artwork aesthetic matching sonic landscape
✅ Distinct enough from Beach House/Tame Impala
✅ 5 million monthly listeners

Wait how did that last one happen? Oh yeah... TikTok. Either way, in short burst this project remains pretty captivating and a pretty listen. However, I do feel that given more time with these sounds it could get a bit bland and repetitive. Especially in the lyrics which feel super out there almost disconnected from any larger theme throughout the project. I ... read more

Beach House - Bloom

Oh shit! I'm ascending!

While listening to this record I kind of started to forget who I was and slowly drifted off into thoughtlessness. I think that is the appeal here. Really sweet sounds that drift you to another place where you can be at peace. I vibe with that. My buddy Steve Madden wanted me to give Beach House a listen and I was originally gonna check out Teen Dream, but he suggested Bloom better. Great choice Steve!

Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
91

First things first.... Thank you for 100 followers and 750 reviews came quicker than I thought.

With a lot of the talk of Mr. Morale being a snooze fest from a couple other rappers in the game I decided to test that theory out. I remember this record having its moment with me but then moving on and not really returning to it, so I was unsure what I was going to feel this time around. To spoil things here, it went well. Really well.

"100% agree that this album needs its time to really grow on you! I actually enjoy Dryland and The Fish Song quite a bit, but can certainly understand some of the apprehension to fully getting lost within those tracks. I think I may need to spin back on the album yet again and re-evaluate my scores since I didn't give Where Did You Go a 100 and it is one of the most memorable tracks off the album for me. Great review!"
