Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss
60

I have no idea what made me think this was going to be horrible stripped back pop but it really wasn't. I think even at this time, Carly had really interesting production that set her apart from a lot of the early 2010's pop scene. While there is a hand full of duds, there is some freaking bangerssss on this thing, like the first 3 track run is really good. I will say, she may come off as corny on a few of these tracks, I have my eyes on you Beautiful. Speaking of Beautiful, the only two ... read more

Avril Lavigne - Love Sux
40

Okay this isn't as bad as I expected it to be, sure, but it definitly is no where near the realm of good, or even mediocre at that. This album is just tolerably bad, there's nothing to it, it's just another pop punk album where it's being sad about love drugs and alcohol with nothing more to it than that. Though suprisingly, it's not an album that I feel the immediate need to shut off, and I'm not craving for it to end, it does help that the LP is relatively short though. Avril just has nothing ... read more

Current 93 - If a City Is Set Upon a Hill
90

Admittedly, I am not very familiar with Current 93's work but I am aware of the name and how big they are for neofolk. This thing is absolutely killer though, the songwriting is genuinely so good. David Tibet's ability to write melancholic passages are chilling and it only impresses me more that he's able to make something sound so apocalyptic yet so tame. I think this album really strikes me with it's simplicity, as it works best with it's psychedelic neofolk instrumentation. Even for how ... read more

Gorillaz - Demon Days
70

This record really is a mixed bag for me, while it does have some of the best songs of the 00's like Feel Good Inc. or November Has Come, it also has a handful of tracks that I feel very lukewarm on. Gorillaz do have quite a unique ability to bring so many sounds together, while I don't think this is the most refined they've sounded, I do think a lot of the genre blends really do stand the test of time because they haven't lost their appeal. While the production can be a bit underwhelming at ... read more

Björk - Homogenic
90

I think I finally realized how much I've been underrating this thing. While it doesn't have the same blissful atmosphere that brings me so much joy from vespertine, it does stand out as quite an impressive production feat. Of course of course the vocals are stellar, but it's a Björk LP, I shouldn't be expecting any less. I also really like the lyrics she touches, especially on tracks like Bachelorette or 5 Years the way she sways her words around the themes of love and passed love. I find ... read more

Massive Attack - Mezzanine
70

It's a bit disappointing to me because this album has really high highs, but a few lows and a specific aspect that take away from a lot of the enjoyment I COULD have with this. My main problem with the album is it's lack of engagement with me, though there is Group Four which does exactly what I'm saying the album isn't. But that being said it doesn't pull me in like I'd like it to. I will say however the production on this is absolutely insane, they really killed it. However, I do think that ... read more

Portishead - Dummy
80

I have had some weird ups and downs with this album, sometimes it clicks, sometimes it just really rubs me the wrong way and I turn it off past It Could Be Sweet. One thing that stays consistent on every listen however, is the dense atmosphere it gives off, it's able to make the gravity so intense and just pulls me down into earth. It works best in it's simplicity and despite a few tracks that I find underwhelming, has really solid performances all around. Beth Gibbons has a way of putting ... read more

The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde
100

Reviewing this in celebration of this album turning 30 years old today, but also just because I love this damn thing. This album is just nothing but absolute fun, with witty yet silly lyrics that can easily get a laugh out of me on basically any song on the record. Even with a track called Ya Mama, none of this album comes off as corny, just incredibly comedic. As a boom bap album, I'd expect creative flows and rhyme schemes and this album fulfills that in every way possible. All of this being ... read more

Arctic Monkeys - The Car

Okay okay hear me out, the production on this shit is fucking FANTASTIC. Here's where you AM fans can tune out because that's all I have to say of positive. Alex Turner's direction for the group is an interesting one to say the least but boy is it not for me. I just cannot stand his voice whatsoever, it's emotionless and dreadful, plus it just doesn't sound all that great. Lyrically, I've never really loved the writing on Arctic Monkey tracks but I at least hope for something catchy, something ... read more

Jack White - Entering Heaven Alive
50

Honestly quite a boring album, especially by Jack White standards. It's filled to the brim with ballads which fail to bring anything to me emotionally (except for the few songs that actually did). I did find some of the production to be underwhelming, but what really let me down was Jack's singing on some of these songs. Especially when looking at Queen of the Bees, it sounded so raw, but in a irritating way which just make me lose interest in it quite rapidly. This is the most mediocre Jack ... read more

Jack White - Fear of the Dawn
80

The first of The White Stripes' Jack White's 2 releases this year. Arguably this album is way more compelling, exciting and different than his second 2022 album. Playing with a lot of cool production ideas that bring a lot of energy and have good riffs that basically support the whole track-list. Lyrically this is a bit more narcissistic in it's approach to finding love, but remains in a very likable Jack White fashion. Sometimes though, especially on tracks like The White Raven and Eosophobia, ... read more

Björk - Fossora

The time has come to finally write my thoughts down about this album. This album is genuinely amazing, it brings me in a whole new ethereal and mystical world that Björk was able to create. from the sombre and mysterious instrumentals with agressive brass and clarinet juxtapositions. Vocally, this is her most interesting and unique performances since Medulla, which is no small feat, especially it being as enjoyable as it is. I also really like the usage of her own vocal chops for extra ... read more

j-hope - Jack In The Box

Uh whattttttt, this goes hard, when did they allow a BTS member to release good music? And at that, hardcore hip-hop?? Literally blown away by this because I had expectations set so low. While this is very derivative and has clear influences of southern hip-hop, it doesn't stop it from having extremely clean cuts, flows and production. I've never expected to say this to anything affiliated with BTS, but I wish this was longer? He's kinda just spitting, even if I don't understand it, the ... read more

leroy - Dariacore 3... At least I think that's what it's called?

My brain is currently melting. This album is so fucking FULL of energy it's crazy. The samples spread all over this thing are hysterical and genius at the same time. Part of me wishes this was longer, but if it went on, I don't know if I could've slept. This album literally feels like I just drink a bottle of coke back when they actually used cocaine in coca cola. I'm a bit speechless because describing anything else about this album feels like words wouldn't suffice, but also saying any ... read more

Superorganism - World Wide Pop
10

What the actual fuck did I just listen to. I'm genuinely surprised that so many people actually like this. This is filled to the brim with quirkiness and childish energy. It's so overcrowded with admittedly interesting production effects, but put all together, makes me want to puke. It's hard to focus on anything this album tries to spit at you because it all goes by like a mess. The lyrics I did catch on to we're mostly just corny and didn't really help it's case. Throughout most of the listen ... read more

Daniel Rossen - You Belong There
80

As someone who is very indifferent on most of Grizzley Bears discography, their front man's debut record didn't particularly pull me towards wanting to listen to it. However, Daniel showed to me with this record that he does have a mind of his own and has the capacity to make one of this years strongest folk albums. What makes this album shine most is how clever the instrumentals are pulled off. Every guitar pluck, every key played and every drum hit feels necessary and well placed. While the ... read more

Ghost - IMPERA
50

Holy hell this is the definition of a front-loaded album. First off, I will say that everything on the first half, from Tobias' flawless writing to the incredible riffs, is just really good music. When hitting the second half though, everything goes downhill. While the concept of the album holds up, we get hit by the song Twenties, which I can say with confidence is the worst song in their discography after Mary On A Cross. The vocals on this are straight up not good, especially with a voice ... read more

Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
70

Critic bait album. YB outsold. Carti woulda done better on these beats. On a more serious note, this album was a tad bit decieving to me, it was very front loaded, which ended up in me giving into the praise this album recieves. But later on in the album, all Fiona's crazy, yet still cool ideas, just don't tie in as well as I'd like them to. She goes through very heavy subjects in the lyrics of some songs, though lyrics don't make up for everything, I'd say it's this album's forte. The song ... read more

Taylor Swift - evermore
70

This record had T. Swizzle experimenting more with the sound she built up on her previous record "folklore". The production evermore being completely topped for the most part, having some way more distinct ideas and compositions. Sometimes though, it's a bit empty and causes some of my least favorite cuts on the album, not by any means bad. Lyrically, I feel like Taylor is getting less and less personal as time moves on, but I don't really dislike that idea. That doesn't mean there ... read more
