FAVORITE TRACK: Barking

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Dead Internet

I’m writing an official review for this album for my school’s newspaper so I don’t want to repeat myself from what’s going to be put in there but right now i’m drunk in the back of an uber listening to “Greyhound,” holding back tears. This is one of the most beautiful albums of the year.

Chat Pile - Cool World

FAVORITE TRACK: Shame

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: None

UPDATE: Stin interview is out :D- https://on.soundcloud.com/ev8GpT7n6ZNrZgbq6

Oh man, this fucking rules. The singles have been nuts, but I think Shame is the best song Chat Pile has ever made. I love when Raygun Busch sings and he does a ton of that on this album who else cheered.... Shame and Milk of Human Kindness feature a ton of singing I was so happy.

All the members are doing insane shit on this, but Luther Manhole's guitar on No ... read more

Wrote about this for my university, but this is a cool project raising money for a really important cause!! All proceeds are split between three hurricane relief charities aiding North Carolina communities and other affected ... read more

FAVORITE TRACKS: Wristwatch, You Don’t Know The Shape I’m In

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Maybe Manning Fireworks

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU

FAVORITE TRACK: JPEGULTRA!

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: vulgar display of power

oh WOW!

Joey Valence & Brae - NO HANDS
90

FAVORITE TRACK: THE BADDEST

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: INTERMISSION 2

No Hands is so fun with this youthful, vibrant energy that radiates off every track. Very Beastie Boys-esque with the aggressive delivery at times but the beats are so creative that the comparisons end there as JV and Brae are completely unique. The lyrics on this are RIDICULOUS and so funny at times without ever coming off as corny. It’s a fine line to make goofy rap music and not be off-putting and cringe, and No Hands ... read more

Current Joys - LOVE + POP Pt 2

FAVORITE TRACK: carti

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: the rest

I've been putting off reviewing this album for a while now. Obviously, you all know by now that I adore Nick Rattigan and will listen to every musical endeavor he is a part of forever and ever. But this is really bad. Like, inexcusably bad.

I appreciate experimentalism always—I value that more than whether the music is actually "good" or not—but this is just so lifeless and an impostor of any emo rap released in the ... read more

Lip Critic - Hex Dealer
99

FAVORITE TRACK: It's the Magic

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: maybeee Death Lurking?

I saw Lip Critic live in 2022. I met a girl at a Turnstile show who had just happened to attend the college I had just transferred to, and she invited me to see them. I had never heard of them before I went to the show, and it's probably one of the top three shows I've ever been to. They played at a shitty punk bar (St. Vitus actually for those of yall who know) and had an energy to them that was ... read more

FAVORITE TRACK: Loud Bark

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Of Her

I Got Heaven combines aggressive punk with ethereal and dreamy pop to deliver a heavy-hitting album about femineity and rage. Missy Dabice is a tour de force on this record and her voice sounds better than ever.

Water From Your Eyes - Everyone's Crushed
80

FAVORITE TRACK: True Life

LEAST FAVORITE TRAVK: 14

WE NEED MORE ODDBALL MUSIC LIKE THIS PLEASE!!!!! We need to all come together and elect this sound as the official music of Brooklyn. No more Frost Children or The Dare— Water From Your Eyes IS the sound of BK.

Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS
72

FAVORITE TRACK: get him back!

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: logical

I like GUTS, but I'm definitely not the target audience. Some of the lyrics are really corny. But it's super cool that Olivia Rodrigo has so much life and is this popular. Her stories are very relatable and she's a very vibrant singer. It's awesome to see something with so much variety resonating with people and is the biggest thing in mainstream pop right now. I know I'm maybe over the age of people she's aiming at, but I love a pop ... read more

Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess
79

FAVORITE TRACK: Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: California

I saw Chappell Roan open for Declan McKenna in 2018 and it was like a completely different person her music was so depressing and very one note so it's awesome to see her doing something so fun!!

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is very, very fun. Extremely (bi)sexual and honest, Chappell Roan's debut encapsulates the feeling of being a 20-something party girl. It feels like gossiping with your best ... read more

Kristin Hayter - SAVED!
85

FAVORITE TRACK: I KNOW HIS BLOOD CAN MAKE ME WHOLE

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: THERE IS POWER IN THE BLOOD

Kristin Hayter described SAVED! as "a noise record with no noise". After listening to this, I can say that's probably the best description. SAVED! is a terrifying, heart-wrenching and exhilarating project about faith. Kristin Hayter is no stranger to the topic of religion, but this album has a much more positive outlook on it than her past work as Lingua Ignota. Even with a more ... read more

Sufjan Stevens - Javelin
99

FAVORITE TRACK: So You Are Tired

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: maybe There's A World?? Like if I really had to choose

(Copied and pasted from what I wrote for my university's newspaper)

Sufjan Stevens contemplates life and love on his thirteenth album, “Javelin.” His most personal music venture to date, “Javelin” revolves around the idea of how much love gives, and how much it takes away. With Stevens recently dedicating the album to his partner, Evans Richardson- who passed ... read more

Current Joys - LOVE + POP
54

FAVORITE TRACK: LOVE + POP

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Rock n Roll Dreams

I have no clue if I like this album or not. I love Current Joys if my username didn't make it obvious enough. But this one is... out there. Nick Rattigan has been saying for two years or so now that Lil Peep has been one of his major inspirations in music recently and you can REALLY tell. From a Lil Peep cover opening the album to Cigarettes sounding like it could've been written for Lil Peep to a Lil Yatchy feature on ... read more

Sprain - The Lamb as Effigy
88

FAVORITE TRACK: We Think So Ill of You

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Privilege of Being

I am nothing if I am not on my knees.

yeule - softscars
89

FAVORITE TRACK: dazies

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: ghosts

yeule’s softscars is the future of pop. Combining pop-punk that calls to the days of Avril Lavigne with this slick futuristic sound, yeule delivers honest, heart-wrenching pop music that is completely unrivaled.

Jeff Rosenstock - HELLMODE
90

FAVORITE TRACK: 3 SUMMERS

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: WILL U STILL U

HELLMODE is quintessential Jeff Rosenstock. Rowdy and colorful guitar riffs, lyrics that come off more like a conversation with a friend than anything else, and ska music- it's the usual combination for Rosenstock's sound but it's still fun and refreshing on this album.

Be Your Own Pet - Mommy
74

FAVORITE TRACK: Rubberist

LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Never Again

I had never heard of the Nashville-based punk group Be Your Own Pet until earlier this year when I heard the ferocious single, Worship the Whip. Be Your Own Pet was formed by vocalist Jemina Pearl at 16 in 2004 and disbanded in 2008 due to misogyny Pearl was receiving, with two albums and a few EPs to their name. In 2021, Jack White personally asked them to open for him and signed them to his record label, Third Man Records (Jemina ... read more
