This did nothing for me. Most of the tracks feel half baked and lacking impact.
A decent indie rock album that provides some bangers. Only a few tracks I would not listen to on their own.
I have a huge nostalgia boner for this album since I used to listen to it every time I was on a bus home from college for like a month or two. Anyway, this is MGMT you know how this goes - a few bangers and a few middling tracks. However, while the less exciting tracks are not worth listening to on their own, they are not as bad when listening through the whole album. But that just might be my bias showing.
I get why people like this a lot, I just don't see myself returning to this all that much except for tracks like I believe or Sunset. Doesn't help that on album listens I start to tune out around Fly To You and after. Billions is a nice closer though.
Why do I feel like I've been clickbaited? I've enjoyed pretty much every single from this album, even Skinny Ape grew on me immensely. That's why it pains to say that the rest of the album didn't do much for me. Every other song, except maybe Oil, fails to pulls its weight here. Maybe this ends up being a good lesson not to release most of your hard hitters as singles. I got my expectations way high and now it feels like I'm listening to the singles, as before, but with some mid tracks thrown ... read more
It's catchy, topical and doesn't feel preachy. Glad to see Paramore still got it.
In Contra, Vampire Weekend continue to exist on the line between being charming and annoying. White Sky with its' piercing wailing would be unlistenable in any other album, but here it is the track I repeat the most.
All in all this is a pretty good "sequel" album. It's Vampire Weekend, again, and if that's what you want, then that's what you're going to get. Can't help but feel like it's missing a couple more standouts though. Something like Campus/Oxford Comma/A-Punk would have ... read more
This album is like that moment when you're between sleeping and being awake, if you know what I mean.
This is a good stepping stone. The production is (mostly) there and she can definitely hold her own in the voice category, but something is a bit... by the numbers here. I'm feeling like Rebecca is trying to carve out a personality here but it all ends up being messy and a bit dim to be honest. Was I expecting too much? Maybe.
I can see why this blew up back in the day. Does not sound dated at all (though a couple tracks are ehhh).
Some of the songs here are total classics, but also some of them are totally forgettable.
I mean, what hasn't been already said about this album. It's a great departure for Yachty and one I hope he continues further.
Lol at this review below mine. I can see the appeal, the quality. However, I don't think I'm fully appreciating what the others are, unfortunately. Shoegaze might not be for me, sadly. Will listen to a couple more albums before committing to this opinion though.
A bit of a lull sometimes, some sort of energy is missing here. Nevertheless, an enjoyable upbeat record.
