Will Toledo has more potential than any other artist right now to create a true rock masterpiece. And Nervous Young Man is the closest thing in the Car Seat Headrest discography to be considered one. Through the angst and depressing thoughts, which are very apparent on this record, Will has some of his most cohesive, relatable, and hopeless songs yet to be released in his name. He draws out his feelings into long, 10 and 15 minute epics, which can be tedious, but still retain their ... read more
Through an extremely developed and futuristic concept, Janelle Monae released one of the first incredible albums of this decade in her 2nd commercial release. Her funky production and silky, comforting voice make for a brilliant take on neo-soul, and inspired many artists after her to use these styles. She also adds in touches of hip hop, jazz, and some assembled choirs to blur the lines between distinct genres and make something that Monae can call her own.

Obviously a spoken word metal album was doomed from the start... but it really isn't as bad as people said it was. The mix of poetry and rough instrumentals is a risky decision that sounded awkward and completely... unique.
However, I have a feeling that this is EXACTLY what Lou Reed and Metallica wanted. It combines the styles that they had perfected from the previous 30+ years of their careers. An album like Lulu was bound to have been created, so leave it to two legendary artists to be ... read more
Every time I put on the next song, I thought "Okay, it's gonna pick up, I know it..." and it never did. Every feature had potential to be great, and every feature came off as mediocre. Even the production wasn't as good as Clams has been on past hip hop records he contributed to. Might grow on me, but i was pretty disappointed by this.
Once In a Lifetime is one of the best songs I have ever heard, and I've thought that ever since my dad showed it to me about 7 years ago. But something keeps me from thinking the same about the rest of the album. I don't know if it's the singing or seemingly tense instrumentation, I cannot say that I was blow away, even though the album was still good.
With very heavy, lush electronic soundscapes, OPN's most notorious full length album is a very innovative and essential album regarding electronically produced music of this century.
Now, whether you like it or not, you have to admit: this is a pretty unique and original album. Daniel Lopatin took aspects of various subgenres of electronic music (vaporwave, plunderphonics, idm) and created something that was his own. Many songs are minimalistic, with low BPMs, which goes against the raging ... read more
Blank Face has some of the best hip hop production I have heard this year, if not the best. However, the rapping itself leaves me wanting more, with nothing new being said that wasn't already said on any past Schoolboy Q album. The choruses were also pretty mediocre and out of place; a lot of the time the vocals sounded too light or distorted compared to the rest of them. Q's voice sounded as if he was never really into what he was saying, like he HAD to make this album rather than him ... read more
Jimi Hendrix's final studio project is also the gem of his discography. Through all 75 minutes of pure psychedelic rock, Jimi sings his most memorable and personal lyrics along with his smooth and funky guitar work. Out of the three records from The Experience, Electric Ladyland easily had the best drumming, and probably some of the best drumming of the 1960's.
The whole album is best listened to in one sitting. It's just one of those records that builds up and up, with the climax being ... read more
The most boring release from Richard yet. Loops and lack of variation bring this EP down, even with a few catchy and enjoyable sections.
E.T. hung himself because his name was used for such a shitty album.
An attempt to recreate one of the best electronic pop albums of this century so far goes completely wrong. Painting With lacks the flashiness, adrenaline, and spacey atmosphere that MPP executed near perfectly. Most of the tracks are so heavily layered that I can barely make out the basic rhythm to it. Childish lyrics and reverb plagued AnCo in the worst of ways on this LP, and I think this is a sign for them to progress their music, rather than redo what was already created.

Deserved to be in that dumpster honestly. Obviously neither label execs nor Sufjan thought that this album was worth being released. Being a fan of Sufjan Stevens, I naturally listened to the album very excited, but this is nothing that i couldn't live without. It's decent for demos and recordings that were never meant to be out in the public domain, however Stalker is not an album to ogle over, unlike some early leaked work.
Remember when these guys had new and exciting music?
I can't listen to either of these songs without pausing halfway through to give my ears a break from the painful lyrics and singing styles.
In a very confusing and quite literally schizophrenic "unfinished" album, Daniel Johnston bends the barrier of what I define to be music. Many of the vocals are random, pointless ramblings, and are sung in a high pitched and vulnerable sounding voice. The melodies are made with pianos, guitars, electronic production, saxophones, and so many other instruments.
I honestly can't tell if this is an intentionally avant-garde LP, or the mess made in the studio stemmed from Johnston's ... read more

I don't know why, but Wyatt's voice irked me so much. I felt he hit some notes that he really wasn't capable of hitting, and this made the album much less enjoyable than it could have been.

This is what I think spiritually transcending to another realm would sound like.
