An essential alternative rock album. The guitar work from The Microphones is absolutely stunning, and it varies from slow and soft to fast paced. The main complaint I have about this album is that the lyricist kept a stagnant tone through a large majority of the album, and I tend to lose focus when that happens. The lyrics themselves were very interesting, dealing with subjects like loneliness and love, with a unique spin on some rehashed and overused topics. I appreciate The Glow Pt. 2, ... read more
What they were trying to do is apparent, and had potential. But what they actually did was make a messy and very flawed work that I thought sounded too much like other punk bands of the time, and didn't have individuality.
EDIT: From the first time I heard this record, I knew it was something special compared to the rest of dream pop that I had gone through. Candy Claws crafted a noisy experience in which I cannot stop listening. It's grown on me a lot, and has become one of my most revisited albums.
In a tropical and slow paced concept, Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time is one of the best dream pop albums of this decade, and definitely the best from Candy Claws. Despite the overuse of reverb, the ... read more
I feel like i'm missing something, this is above average at very best, no psychedelic masterpiece. Somebody please explain what I am failing to understand, because I try as hard as I can to think of The Beatles as an amazing band, but I just can't.
When I listen to this album, I can't say that I think too much of it. But then when I listen to any other electronically based piece of music made after this, I realize just how important and influential the Richard D. James Album is to music.
fav tracks: Corn Mouth, Fingerbib, To Cure a Weakling Child
There are times when the production could use some cleaning and balancing with the vocals, but an otherwise promising debut.
fav tracks: Holy Forest, Metamorphosis
very very boring and void of any life, but there are still some moments that remind me of why i love dream pop so much.
EDIT: This is the summer album I needed. Far from a disappointing follow up to Since I Left You. The smooth production makes me dance around a little bit every time I listen to Wildflower, and the funk influences are the cherry on top. Of course there are some flaws and flops, but not enough to bring down the entire album.
fav tracks: Subways (standout), The Wozard of Iz, Live a Lifetime Love
As far as sample based music goes, I have a pretty slim number of records that really appeal to me. And now, Since I Left You has become one of those records. There are thousands of samples used throughout this record; some from television programs, some from vintage jazz albums. And all of them are laid out to fuse into a behemoth of sampling mastery. The repetition of a single phrase, that can be found on many tracks, keeps a playful tone to the record, while the airy and lighthearted ... read more
In a politically personal solo debut album, ANOHNI brings some of the year's best synthpop and electronic music. Her voice is filled with passion when singing on every line, whether it be about being attacked with a drone, or the 44th president of the United States. Her rhythm with every beat is perfectly timed, which only adds to the flawlessness of the synthesis between her smooth vocals and the futuristic production. There are definitely some things to be worked on within Hopelessness; ... read more
DIEMONDS is one of my most recent favorite hip hop songs, everything from the beat to the lyrics are flawless. The rest of this mixtape is very well done and impressive, but nothing is too incredible. $uicideboys are basically a much less shitty version of Pouya in my opinion. Their production and use of samples is done very cleanly, and there are parts on some tracks that sound like their voices drown into the beat. There's a lot of potential for these guys to do something new and exciting ... read more
I got through the majority of this before it was taken down from spinrilla, but it's ok. nothing is very good, and nothing for the most part is awful aside from a few moments... still no songs that have the appeal that panda has.
this is what i was looking for when i listened to black one for the first time. heavy, dark, and destructive beats with some of the most frightening vocals from Attila. Definitely an album i will be going back to, and one that is a real masterpiece in the drone genre. This is a soundtrack for the apocalypse, which is exactly what i feel like i'm going through when listening to this album (in the best of ways).
low-budget static metal that creates something that isn't found in any other album. purposefully using shitty equipment to fit a certain sound is a very obscure artistic decision, but when it works out this well, i can see what Burzum was going for.
fav tracks: Dunkelheit, Erblicket Die Tochter Des Firmaments
Radiohead finally gets down a perfect mix of minimal electronic and alternative rock music to create their best record yet. In Rainbows shows just how ambitious the band is, and how they balance mainstream pop appeal with the same style of rock that they made a name for themselves with. Definitely among the best rock albums of the 2000's.
random note: i feel like The Life of Pablo's cover was inspired by this one.
fav tracks: 15 Step, All I Need, Reckoner
Amazing, but lacks excitement that i find to be the best part of punk music. Never Mind the Bollocks has it's moments, but this would not be the first album i recommend for someone trying to get into punk music.
fav tracks: God Save the Queen, Holidays in the Sun
I don't think anybody really expected the Red Hot Chili Peppers to be trying anything new over 30 years in their career, and we didn't really get any new sounds or any experimental music that artists sometimes mess with after cementing a loyal fan base. But what RHCP has on The Getaway is some smooth and soulful funk-rock that serves for a really satisfying listen. The large majority of people who really listen to the Chili Peppers are in their 40's and 50's, and many people in those age ... read more
