Larry June & The Alchemist - The Great Escape

Probably Larry's best project. Alcs production really lends itself to Larry's mellow delivery and the few features on this thing work as a great break in the vibe to add more energy. Sure Larry may not be the most lyrically proficient rapper nor does he really add much energy to this thing, but i feel like that somewhat works in favor of the album's overall atmosphere. By no means is this most mind blowing project ever in terms of what it tries to accomplish, but it does what it ... read more

On Wither's review of J. Cole - The Fall-Off
"@PostWither I guess I can see how it may come off as lazy. I personally find it fine though given art inherently comes from places of personal experience and perspective anyway, but i understand how it may appear to be dull, especially in the case of Cole who, frankly, has a rather uninteresting writing style at times."
On Wither's review of J. Cole - The Fall-Off
"I'm genuinely curious as to why you think he's rapping about nothing here. I do find Cole's writing to be rather on the nose quite often, but I feel like he took a more mature approach on this album comparatively to much of his prior work. Also, why the negative perspective on him rapping about his own experiences? That's a common feature of a majority of so-called conscious hip hop, not like its something new, unless that in it of itself is the reason you dislike it. Great review nontheless though, even if I personally disagree."

On Phoenix_wrong's review of Ice Cube - Man Up
"@Ableist_abby honestly that explains my thoughts perfectly. West Coast hip hop artists, atleast the mainstream ones, were never able to really evolve their sound and it just leads to all their projects sounding so dull compared to other regions. Especially so considering how washed lyrically a lot of them are now, like with Cube here. Luckily there's some amazing underground or underapreciated west coast artists that still keep that side of the genre alive, atleast aside from some of the more modern big names like Kendrick or Tyler. In their cases though they've obviously completely evolved passed the typical west Coast sound."

"@oSiley Lowkey I don't understand either. I moreso associate drum-less with this kind of mellow production style now more than I do it actually being drumless since the genre basically always has drums."
