My respect for this album shot up exponentially when if found out how young Matt Heafy was when he recorded this. Dude was 18 when he recorded his vocals for this album. That's insane dude and you absolutely would not have known it from listening to this album, because his vocals are pretty damn good.
The whole album is pretty damn good. I think Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr is above and beyond the best song on the album, but that doesn't mean there aren't other ... read more
This thing goes insanely hard, especially since it is a debut album. Crazy how locked in these guys were from the get-go, from the riffs, drumming, and 🚀SPACE🚀 themed stuff.
Forests of Legend is the standout song for me. It's the song where it feels like everything the album sets out to really shines and kicks in. The instrumentation, the vocals, EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD.
Dude, I wish I was an evil ass wizard ripping a bong in a dark forest. Maybe there is a Minecraft modpack for this.
It began long ago, on the battlefields of the great war. Two German scientists sought to harness dark and mysterious forces, buried for centuries. They believed their discoveries would ensure Germany's ultimate victory. But they could never have imagined, just what else their research would unearth...
My name is Samantha, I'm going to tell you how all this really began.
Yeah it's unoriginal Metallica worship, but who cares? It still SLAPS.
Doing a rereview of this one as my og review kinda stunk.
Really happy Gojira is seeing a large influx of new listeners since their Olympics performance. I've been listening to this band since high school and saw them in 2023 alongside Lorna Shore and Mastodon. Trust me, if you get the chance to see these guys live, DO IT. Best concert I've ever been to.
On that note, Gojira is a band I would put under the "listen to with the biggest fucking speakers you have" category, as ... read more
I physically pogged every time he did the super high mega banshee scream. I also listened to this while I was at work and felt like I had to turn it down every time he did it.
Truly a double-edged sword.
The guy on the cover is me following the nice ladies in the parking lot back to their cars, ensuring that they are safe and comfortable.
It was a bit chilly on my way to work this morning, so I decided it was time to try my hand at some classic black metal again now I'm more tolerant to the genre. I decided to go with Dark Throne first, mostly because they have the least amount of church burnings under their belt.
Right off the bat, the albums gets +80 points for being a metal album that ... read more
A pet peeve of mine is when djent/prog bands get so clean and technical to the point it sounds sterile. This album is not that. It's impressively technical, but it still has punch and personality. They keys don't always fit and are a bit goofy, but I began to really enjoy them by the end. I also appreciate that 90% of the songs are under 4 minutes. If this was any longer than it currently, it would have begun to outstay its welcome.
In conclusion, this album fucks.

So, I did a Deafheaven album deep-dive because I wanted to listen to "Lonely People With Power" again and see if I would like it more or less with the context of all the albums in the band's discography. I've made it to the end of this dive, and I have come to the album I knew I would have trouble with the most.
I am going to say this right off the bat: I have not found a pure shoegaze album that I like yet. There are plenty of other albums in the genre I know are classics ... read more
There are some cool things this album does, like the choruses, big snare slams, and the guitar solos. By all means, it is a perfectly fine album.
Forevermore also kicks a lot of ass and is the best song on the album.
That said, my thought process when it comes to this album is much harsher because we've had quite a few deathcore albums come out this year that have made waves online, with my personal favorite being Whitchapel's Hymns in Dissonance. I can tell you right now, this ... read more
Listening to this makes me feel like the guy on the cover.
I think it goes on for a little too long at points, and some of the clean sections don't feel as inspired as they did on "Sunbather," but this is still another excellent album from Deafheaven. It feels much sadder and moodier compared to "Sunbather," and I really dig that.
This album makes me want to drink and drive with my space cruiser to go pick up my buddy Glup Shitto at the cantina.
Listened to this on a whim a few months ago, but I wanted to give it another listen and HOLY MOLY this thing is bonkers. One of the best metal albums I've heard from the 2010s, and perhaps the greatest thrash album in DECADES. I cannot overstate how much I loved this album.
That makes it hurt so much more that we will most likely never see another album from these guys ... read more
The fact that this came out in 1993 is insane to me. People say that this greatly influenced future melodic death albums, which is true, but I can see influence in a whole lot of other extreme metal genres as well. This came out two years before "Symbolic" did, and this album does a whole lot of things that album did.
The early 90's continue to wow me with hidden benchmark bangers, and this one is no exception.
Pretty dang solid for a debut album. The album does get a bit predictable and samey, as every song has a very similar 2-minute instrumental intro, but that isn't inherently a bad thing.
What this album shows is that the band knew right from the get-go what they wanted to be, even if they were still figuring out how to put all the pieces together. I really enjoyed this. I may give it a higher score on a relisten, but I still find the band's future music to be so much better, so ... read more
2/3 of this album is super peak. 1/3 of this album is super mid.
Well, more like 1/5 is mid, but let me explain.
"Equus," "Misericorde," and "Suspure" are all phenomenal songs. They are all super consistent and, even though they are all over 10 minutes, never really feel like they are overstaying their welcome. When I think of this album and why I like it so much, I think of these songs. In 2023, when this album came out, I went as far as to say this was my album ... read more
