A bit basic, but I had a pretty good time with this one. I never really felt it really having a high point. It was just pretty consistently alright all the way through. While I think it hurts the prospect of me ever coming back to this album, I think the band still releasing something of this quality at this point in their careers is still pretty commendable.
Wish it was a concept album though.
I tend to pint at this album when it comes to discussions of the worst metal album covers of all time. Are there worse out there? Maybe, but they're probably by some goregrind or some super obscure solo black metal project. When it comes to covers people know and is burned into their brain, this is it.
The music is alright though. I like the acoustic cuts, and I find that the album is pretty consistently good, though it is much longer than it needs to be. Maiden albums keep getting longer ... read more
Dude, I wish I was the patriarch of a gang of skeletons. All we would do is day drink and laugh as we rattle our bones. You know cool that shit would be?
I severely underrated this when I first heard it. Yes, I love their later stuff more, but this is still great. These guys literally pioneered death metal, like come on. More than that, it's written and performed really well. The production is also pretty decent, having a good balance between reverb crunch while still giving some room to ... read more
Real nice return to form here. Real nice to have Bruce and guitarist Adrian Smith back, but I'm also happy they kept Janick Gers so they could experiment with three guitar players. Sometimes it's a bit much and things sound a bit muddy, but most other times it sounds pretty rich and unique.
I don't find the writing as exciting or unique as their earlier stuff, but it's still a pretty enjoyable album and easily the best thing they've released since Seventh Son. Also, ... read more
Seasons in the Abyss is a phenomenal record and probably their best overall. The title track is so, so good and was a song I was delighted to hear again after not hearing it for like 6 years. Even beyond that, there are plenty of staple Slayer songs on here that kick so much ass, such as War Ensemble, Spirit In Black and Hallowed Point.
While, I prefer the more in-your-face ferocity of Reign in Blood, I still loved this and it was really cool finally getting around to this one after my dad ... read more
I like how this album is a flip on Reign in Blood. While that album focused on speed, this one focuses on chuggage and slowing things down. You still get some speed, it's a Salyer album after all, but the focus on making some songs slower really adds a nice vibe to things.
I still think Reign in Blood is better, but this is absolutely a classic thrash record.
I expected it to be a lot worse, but it's still not very good.
Blaze Bayley is fine, but he is the worst vocalist Iron Maiden has had. Alongside this, the rest of the band feels like they are phoning it in, as any time you think things are about to get interesting, it stops. This album meanders a lot and there is no reason this album should be as long as it is. As of now, this is the longest album the band has made and there is no reason for it. The length is absolutely not justified.
There are moments that do live up to the legacy of 80's Iron Maiden, mostly seen in the lyrics and the title track. However, I found this to be very messy as a full album experience. It the parts are definitely better than the whole.
Still, it's a good album, just not really a memorable one, besides the title track of course. That song rules.
Alongside the mixing being quiet on my preferred streaming site, the album cover also has the Mexican Piss Filter from Breaking Bad, so idk what's going on there.
Yeah, this thing is absolutely bonkers. In your face the entire time and never lets up. None So Vile is definitely better, but this is pretty great as well, especially being a debut.
Sitting with this once again made me realize that this is pretty close to being flawless.
There is so much depth to this album that is easily missed from a first listen. The instrumentation, vocals, presentation and lyrics all have layers to them that create a brutal, yet captivating album that borders on being beautiful.
That beauty comes from how tragic and sad this album sound. Yes, it's angry, VERY angry, but the deeper you get in, the more hopeless and defeated it sounds. It's ... read more
For the longest time I thought Eddie was grabbing the guy's crotch on the album cover, but I now see that it was his neck. Still freaky.
Even though this album wasn't oozing with creativity like the seven albums before it, I still found it to be pretty enjoyable. This album defiantly feels more like dumb fun as songs tend to meld together and have less personality. Still, I can't say I disliked what I heard and still found myself pretty engaged the whole way through.

I've read the book this album is based on! I didn't like it, but I love this!
The band's use of synths on here makes their sound have much more of a dynamic range. The music is full to the brim with personality and the band's classic sound of British zaniness. I will say it one last time.
Last time, I MEAN IT THIS TIME.
I had a big, dumb grin on my face. This album was fun and engaging, something the band has done consistently for seven albums now. Man, the band is seven ... read more
I always found the bands that Cannibal Corpse influenced to be much more interesting than Cannibal Corpse themselves, especially their early material. Coming back to their most well know album, I still believe that, but I've come to much more of an understanding of what this and what it's trying to do.
Cannibal Corpse is the equivalent of a slasher that is obsessed with kills, blood and guts over a compelling story or characters.
In music terms, the lyrics are vile/shocking and are ... read more
Looking at this one again as I feel it’s a good way to start spooky season, as yes, I find this album to be quite the horror set piece.
I definitely liked it when I first listened to it, but I didn’t fully appreciate it for was it is and how it most certainly influenced a lot of future extreme metal.
From the oppressive instrumentation that never lets up, to the vocals that are barbaric, this album never lets up and is 32 minutes of extreme, unbridled terror.
Sure, there are a ... read more
I was genuinely considering giving this a perfect score, but I don't love Heaven Can Wait and would even go as far as to call it a tad annoying.
Besides that, holy moly this album rules. The Sci-Fi theme is fully explored on here with the guitar synths, making Iron Maiden's signature sound even more dynamic than it already was. Caught Somewhere in Time and Alexander the Great highlight this the best, with having excellent riffs and dialed in performances.
I keep saying it with every ... read more
This was such an epic and fun album to listen through. Just like Number of the Beast, I had a stupid grin on my face through the entire runtime.
This album, alongside Somewhere in Time, are the two albums my dad wanted to listen to the most as those are his two favorites. I haven't told him how much I like this album yet, but I imagine when I do, he will also get a big, stupid grin on his face.
Love you dad.
Crazy? I was crazy once....
The Trooper already makes this an elite album, but there are a few other bangers on here as well. I don't completely adore it like Number of the Beast, but it's still very fun and kicks ass.
...They locked me in a Room. A rubber Room. A rubber Room with rats, and rats make me crazy.
Such a devious and evil as hell album. It's gritty and nasty with its atmosphere but feels sophisticated, with interesting writing with instrumentation that is memorable and kicks ass.
The layered vocals are also a really nice touch. I didn't think they worked on every song, but then it did, it was downright sinister. They are a very nice addition that sets this album apart from the band's other albums and other death metal albums.
Not my favorite by the group, but still a ... read more
Pretty notable step up from their debut. Instrumentals sound much more like the Iron Maiden most people know. Vocals are also really solid on here as well. Significant step up from the previous album as it fits the music better.
Only real complaint I have is that the guy on the cover should have a knife instead of a hatchet. It is Britian after all. It needs to be lore accurate.
