Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS

Bro was cooking up wtf

Rebecca Black - Friday (Remix)
39

I can't tell if it's a joke or not. Did they actually try to make a remix of the song, or did they jump on musical trends to ironically make a shit song in the spirit of the original "Friday"? Anyways, this sounds like the love child of self-deprecative 100 gecs jokes and 4 pediatric doses of stolen surgical ketamine.

Jeremy Zucker - all the kids are depressed
40

"We're all suicidal kids telling each other suicide isn't the answer" the song.

As a heads up, I'm not trying to gatekeep mental illness or come down on this guy if he's struggled with himself.

Came across this randomly on youtube, and clicked on it because the title of the song is, well, "all the kids are depressed". Sorry, but this just completely rubs me the wrong way. I'm not sure what this dude's purpose was in writing and making such a song, but the end product is ... read more

Black Country, New Road - For the first time
90

"And you cannot fucking touch me . . . I am invincible in these sunglasses"

Through unstable vocals and riotous instrumentation, Black Country, New Road is able to create a fascinating work full of self-reflection and cold rage. The tracks are assembled, often switching tone and swapping production style throughout, in such a way that intimately depicts the jumbled mindscape of our narrator, Isaac Wood. Dripping in irony, sarcasm, and references, the 6 tracks harshly paint the narrow ... read more

FKA twigs - Don't Judge Me
70

Funnily enough, production wise, the tracks biggest strengths are also kind of its biggest weaknesses. It's airy and light, as one would expect from Twigs, but almost to the point where there's almost no substance at all. Sure it sounds great, but it also definitely feels skeletal at points.

Then there's Headie's verse which leaves more than a little to be desired. In particular, his delivery is muddy and it gets incredibly hard to understand what he's saying. Now this wouldn't be that much ... read more

Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: The End Of Day
81

I'm pretty sure I first heard Cudi on a ESPN documentary about either the Cuban or Dominican Republican Little League World Series baseball team from 2007ish called (I think) "Boys of Summer". Forgive me for not remembering the exact year or the nationality of the team depicted, but it was from a long ago, and I can't seem to find mention of the documentary anywhere on the net.

Now what I do remember is the story of the team, who, starting early in the year, worked their asses off ... read more

Joji - Nectar
81

Edit: After months of listening to this, I can say that I was wrong at points. While I still think that this is highly inconsistent, the few true duds don't ruin the emotions that the album is able to conjure and sustain. It's not the perfection I supposed I would have hoped for, but clearly I had the bar raised far too high. It's good to just enjoy the album for what it is.

[Original Rev] : Once again, the fatal flaw of Joji's album is his consistency. Whether he's indulging in ... read more

Weezer - Weezer (Green Album)
47

Incredibly generic and boring. With a few exceptions, everything sounds the same, and Rivers Cuomo's voice is still less pleasant than that of a depressed adolescent singing Creep.

Despite my dislike of the Blue Album, I still appreciated the ideas that Weezer brought to the table. However, by the Green Album, those same boring romantic ideas have since become massively overblown and trite. The songwriting isn't revolting, but it's still patently stale. It's not quite a non-album, but it's ... read more

FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
89

FKA Twigs' second full length album, MAGDALENE, is a harrowing and gripping collage of lovelorn pain. Through her paradoxically sparse musical landscape and marvelous deconstruction of pop/rnb sounds and ideas, Twigs is able to explore themes of isolation, anguish, and desire in a uniquely beautiful way.

Sonically, MAGDALENE is a treat to the ears. The production is exceptionally distinct, offering some of the most interesting musical choices I've heard in a while. It also works amazingly ... read more

Kanye West - ye
71

Tbh, it's a lot better than what people said it was. Even though each song isn't perfect, they all make up for the mistakes of the others, and present a rather unique portrait of Kanye that I hadn't experienced before.

Tame Impala - Lonerism
87

Fucking awesome.

Each song builds on the album listening experience, meshing together to from a wave of sound and emotion that overpowers you. Lonerism comes out of the gate running with Be Above It, an amazing opener that simultaneous whips you into a frenzy while at the time calming you. Be Above It sets the general tone and mood of the album, but each song that comes after it manages to delve into different thoughts and production while still following a tightly tracked and calculated ... read more

Verzache - Thought Pool
73

I've been a pretty casual fan of Zach Farache, or Verzache, for a year or two now. His first album, Thought Pool, isn't his best work so far, but it's an interesting project that displays the potential that Verzache has as an artist.

8 tracks and 26 minutes long, Thought Pool reflects the ebb and flow of Zach's mental state, detailing the breakdown of his emotions and his relationship problems. His instrumentation is unique, incorporating indie pop, indie rock, and trap aesthetics into his ... read more

Jack Stauber - Pop Food
75

As someone who'd assumed that Buttercup was the only piece of music worthy of listening to from Jack Stauber, I am happy to say that Pop Food is a good ass album, and great fun to listen to.

Koi Boy, Oh Klahoma, and Buttercup are my personal favorites here, but the rest of the album is still chock full of great indie pop songs.

Lil Uzi Vert - Eternal Atake
53

Lil Uzi Has Writer's Block : The Album

As much as Luv is Rage 2 was inconsistent and quasi-shitty, it definitely entertained, and had at least 2-3 great bangers. Now on the otherhand, you've got eternal etake, a project which sports even more impressive production than that of Luv is Rage 2 or any of his previous work, yet still somehow manages to be boring as hell. Even when you hear one of the rare good songs on the album, it is almost always followed closely by a straight up dog shit ... read more

Clairo - Immunity
60

Just barely manages to edge past absolute mediocrity.

Although it doesn't sound as lifeless as dairy 001, it doesn't stand out almost at all in the indie pop music scene. I suppose that she's carved out a niche for herself in the lofi indie scene, but if she ever wants to reach a larger demographic or truly improve her music, she's going to have to either change her production style or vocals. The overly somber sound of her music gets more boring the more you listen to it, and her over ... read more

Billy Joel - The Stranger
81

As a person who basically only listened to the Essential Billy Joel as a kid because of my parents, I have a very odd relationship with Billy Joel music. I'd say that I know about 20-25 songs of his word for word, while the rest of his discography is a complete mystery. Going into fully listening the Stranger for the first time, I was relatively sure the quality and the style I was going to hear. However, when I finally finished listening to the last track, I was incredibly pleasantly ... read more

J. Cole - KOD
31

Don't let what the Trump administration has done distract you from the fact that J. Cole has gone platinum with no features.

As so many before me have pointed out, this just appears to be J. Cole's attempt to capitalize on the success of his contemporaries by borrowing themes and production qualities from artists ranging from Kendrick to Drake. In this pursuit to find the perfect mix of the J. Cole conscious hip hop and fast rap/trap aesthetics, Cole accidentally neglects the quality of the ... read more

"I don't like 69, and I'm not here to defend his music or the things he's done, but being inconsistent with how you judge musical artists based on how much you like their music is hypocritical. Like a massive ass amount of people have already pointed out, there are a huge amount of amazing artists who've done really shitty things in their lives. To condemn a specific group of those people (ie. 6ix9ine, Chris Brown) as a means by which to legitimize your dislike of their music, while supporting other people who've committed actions on par with the previously mentioned (ie. David Bowie, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley) is stupid. Make up your mind whether or not you are going to support artists who've committed crimes or not. If you're going to attempt to de-platform artists who are pedophiles, be uniform about it. If you're not, just acknowledge that art created by horrible people can still be appreciated. "
