ive always thought of the vocals of their previous work walked the line of post-punk too closely, lacking real emotional depth and for some reason sounding like a less amatuer and pretentious wilbur soot. but my god has that changed. ironically, this record's vocals are my favourite part. his delivery couples such a strained and tired voice with moments of intricately constructed midwest emo styled lyrical genius.
it would be unfair to give a review that wasn't as intricate and unflinching as this record undoubtedly is. unfortunately I can't be asked so yeah
listening to this on a family road trip was a surprisingly calm experience
it's tranquil. it's meditative. its songs are really long. it's a complete left turn for rock music, influencing the wankery of post-rock we know and usually love today.
angsty and unbelievably catchy. there are moments where the lyrics lack a punchy and addictive quality the music has, but it still remains potent in its message.
an engaging listen front to back. but several songs suffer from allocating to heavily to the story element of the album, while being lackluster or uncomfortable to listen to as an individual track. their own pretentious story is the record's driving quality while being it's most prominent flaw.
