Anderson .Paak - Oxnard
90

“Oxnard” is a fuckin’ awesome record with outstanding production, great collaborators and hilarious writing (Headlow made me laugh my ass off)! Overall, Anderson .Paak is a great presence in the hip hop genre.

The Good, the Bad & the Queen - Merrie Land
87

“Merrie Land” is like riding an abandoned ferris wheel with the ghost of Damon Albarn and his dummy telling tales of the past. The writing and the instrumentation work extremely well together to create a very melancholic atmosphere for us to delve into, making for an eerie listening experience. This is also some of Albarn’s best work in a while!

Panda Bear - Young Prayer
72

Panda Bear provides us with very minimalist and beautiful acoustic pieces on “Young Prayer”. It meanders just a little bit and it's not an essential listen but it’s still a short but sweet avant-folk album.

Good

Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
93

“Sung Tongs” is a stripped down effort that doesn’t feel compromised. It’s purely an AnCo record throughout with gorgeously textured production, outstanding acoustic instrumentation and great songwriting. Yes, the closer is pretty bad but everything else I found amazing.

Fav Tracks: Who Could Win A Rabbit, Winters Love, Visiting Friends, We Tigers, Leaf House, Kids On Holiday, Mouth Wooed Her, The Softest Voice

LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
91

LCD Soundsystem’s breakout debut ages very well in their discography. James Murphy’s combination of self aware lyrics and danceable as hell production are still factors that hold up today.

Fav Tracks: Losing My Edge, Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, Yr City’s A Sucker, Give It Up, Too Much Love, Great Release, Tribulations, Movement, Never As Tired As When I'm Waking Up, Yeah

Laura Jane Grace - Bought to Rot
79

Laura’s songwriting is great and the songs themselves are catchy. It’s not entirely consistent but it’s still a good listen.

Fav Tracks: I Hate Chicago, Reality Bites, Apocalypse Now (& Later), China Beach, The Airplane Song, Valeria Golina, Manic Depression

Least Fav Track: Screamy Dreamy

Objekt - Cocoon Crush
84

I just got some new headphones. The throbbing beats on “Cocoon Crush” were a great test for them! It’s an eerie and strange listen throughout with noises scattering throughout the left and right channels and droning synthesizers. It’s a uniquely unsettling experience overall and one that I do recommend.

Fav Tracks: Secret Snake, Rest Yr Troubles Over Me, Deadlock, Lost and Found, Dazzle Anew, 35, Runaway

Least Fav Track: Another Knot

Architects - Holy Hell
78

While it can feel a little samey after a while, “Holy Hell” features powerful vocals and great instrumentation with some emotional depth coming from the death of a bandmate.

Fav Tracks: Doomsday, Royal Beggars, Hereafter, Death Is Not Defeat, A Wasted Hymn, Mortal After All

Least Fav Track: Damnation

Score:

Jon Bellion - Glory Sound Prep
43

“Glory Sound Prep” has ambition... sort of. But it’s let down by some cringe-worthy lyrics, a very “Pixar”-ish feel and terrible mixing (Especially on Couples Retreat).

Fav Tracks: Coversations With My Wife, Cautionary Tales, JT, Adult Swim

Least Fav Tracks: Couples Retreat, Stupid Deep, The Internet, Mah’s Joint

Score:

Mediocre

Lil Peep - Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 2
37

Lil Peep doesn’t sell out for his label. His label sells out for Lil Peep. Holy shit! He’s the Chuck Norris of Emo Rap!

Yeah. I’m bored.

It may sound heartless but I just don’t really care that much.

Sorry. R.I.P.

Fav Tracks: Cry Alone, Hate Me (I guess)

Least Fav Tracks: Sex With My Ex, Sit Next To Lex, Sex With Lex, I Don’t Even Know Anymore I’m Tired

I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME - 1981 Extended Play
80

I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME’s debut EP is catchy and fun, if formulaic, with a clever “Lost tapes from the 80’s” concept that’s accompanied by Dallon Weekes’ interesting lyrics. Overall, I’m interested in seeing a full LP from these guys.

Big Baller B - The Good, The Brad, and the Emo
NR

Still better than Pig Poker P and Cig Smoker E.

Anyway, this is deep and it's getting the Golden Dab.

Björk - Vespertine
100

“Vespertine” is a beautiful, emotionally powerful record that focuses on Björk’s relationship with Mathew Barney. Her lyrics bring a huge portion of romance, longing and sexual desire to the record that is both hard-hitting and, now that their relationship has ended, heartbreaking.

Fav Tracks: Pagan Poetry, Hidden Place, Unison, Harm of Will, Aurora, It’s Not Up to You, Cocoon, Undo, Sun In My Mouth, Heirloom

Björk - Homogenic
100

"Homogenic" is the most uncomfortably beautiful album experience I've ever journeyed through! Everything from the production, Björk’s vocals, the painfully reflective lyrics, they're all perfectly executed here! Overall, this is one of my favorite electronic albums of all time!

Vince Staples - FM!
78

The radio concept of "FM!" is very "FUN!", Vince Staples is great here and Earl actually appears on a project for once! The production isn't as experimental or inspired as his other works, though.

Fav Tracks: FUN!, Feels Like Summer, The Earl Sweatshirt and Tyga interludes, Outside!, No Bleedin'

Least Fav Track: Relay

Very Good

38

I have no idea why I decided to do this as my first album today. I mean, there are a few good satirical moments here and there but everything else failed to even bring a grin to my face and this barely has any music at all. It's mostly just terrible skits. Overall, I think we're getting tired of chasing the D.

A few times it excites me. Most of the time it bores me. Sometimes it's gimmicky. Sometimes it makes me want to die.

Allie X - Super Sunset

It's way too short, which is a shame because "Super Sunset" contains some of the best pop production of the year along with some great writing and performances!

Least Fav Track: Focus

Animal Collective - Here Comes the Indian

“Ark” brings them back up to the noisy psychedelia that AnCo were known for. The tracks here are layered, beautiful and challenging to listen to. Not their greatest work, but it's still an essential listen in their discography.
