Mom Jeans. - Puppy Love
75

My little brother wanted me to listen to this album. It can totally rock at times and is good music. I wish it was a bit more exploratory or that the tracks differed from each other more. My most major issues with it are things that I just take issue with in most Midwest Emo, the lyrics can be too corny, the instrumentals tend to be formulaic and predictable, and palm muting is fucking abused. This stops it from being great, but I really dig it at times. W Mom Jeans., I vastly prefer the shit ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - Teen of Denial: Joe's Story
72

As critical as I am of Teens of Style, I wish this was Teens of Style.

Aside from our new additions, the delightful Optimistic Son and Joe Drives Again (which I immediately clocked was The Drum Strikes Back) there is basically no difference. The only real changes are all the swears being removed. Occasionally you’ll hear the vocals sound pretty different or an alteration in an instrumental, but most of the time it’s same old. Connect the Dots is a bit interesting, but still the ... read more

Morphine - Cure for Pain
90

So I absolutely fucking adore this. Listening to this album, the several times I have, gives me great interest in Morphine, Mark Sandman, and Jazz-Rock as a whole. I will listen to more of this in any way I can. Candy is my favorite song off the album and I can’t get enough of it, it’s so incredible. There are no skips, and even the less great songs still have an iconic sound for me. I don’t love Sheila, but I WILL sing along with it, especially when he says “Sheila, ... read more

Wednesday - Bleeds
87

I very much believe that within the next few years we will see a strong rise in alternative country and I’m excited by the idea. Wednesday is a front runner of this era of alternative country (this caucus of slacker rock as well) and I am all about them. Bleeds seems to be their best work yet, though I haven’t listened to their other albums in their entirety. I had the privilege of seeing these fellas live in Dallas a few weeks back and god they are amazing. A real punk feel to them ... read more

Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
98

Pavement is among the greatest bands to ever exist. The perfect masterpiece, although it is second to the imperfect masterpiece that is Wowee Zowee.

Sooj - Crusher
77

That’s a lot of Luigis.

An overall pretty nice project. There are standouts like Fleece and Gallo Pinto, but other than that a lot of this tends to be a bit samey and similar to what Duster kind of just keeps doing. There were some bits I really liked but this had me wishing they were a bit more experimental or leaned a bit more into a sort of abrasive sound. I did genuinely enjoy this, there’s plenty of really nice parts and the closer is beautiful. I’d probably be way ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - Nervous Young Man
98

Genuinely some of the best music ever made, slacker rock is so fucking peak.

PENPALS - TELL ME WHY
85

A friend of mine recommended me this and god, it’s great. I was not expecting it to be so amazing. TELL ME WHY felt to me like some cross between Pavement and The Cars, which makes sense seeing that apparently they released an album titled Caarrs with a cover incredibly similar to Heartbeat City. That 80s rock and 90s indie feel is a great combo here. I adored this. Super power kind of sucks though. Always unfortunate when a closer is bad. And with only four it songs here, it does drag my ... read more

Pavement - Wowee Zowee
100

The best Pavement album, and one of the best albums ever made. In every other universe of the multiverse, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is the best Pavement album, we just happen to live in the only one where it’s actually Wowee Zowee. And what a blessing it is to live here. Wowee Zowee is the only tolerable reaction to Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. In fact, I’d say their discography is the perfect timeline. We start with the messy, scrappy debut, filled with charm and dogshit; it sounds ... read more

Dinosaur Jr. - Whatever's Cool with Me
71

I went to a physical media store looking to buy CDs, I was especially in the mood to buy Dinosaur Jr CDs. The place was great and the owner was an awesome dude, but I didn’t find much of anything.

I found this CD though.

Hey, It’s a B-sides album, I’m not gonna expect it to be great. It isn’t great, but it’s pretty good! I liked it. It’s mostly middle of the road alright songs, with Keep Your Glove being actually really good. The standouts are the two ... read more

The All-American Rejects - The All-American Rejects
80

This album has forever been my guilty pleasure.

I’m SUPPOSED to hate it, it has a lot of qualities I usually hate in albums, in pop punk, in this sort of stuff. It’s so cliche, it’s really not good, I love listening to it. This album is so sick.

Dominic Fike - Rocket
55

So yeah it’s not good.

Dominic Fike makes another album and Why Bother doesn’t like it. A great amount of Dominic Fike’s tendencies and bits of style just don’t work for me. I think he’s bad at rapping. I think he goes for this minimalist style with some of his songs, but it often falls short and instead just feels substanceless. I think he tries to have too many effects on his vocals that just don’t work 75% of the time. I think his falsetto rarely sounds ... read more

twenty one pilots - Drum Show
74

It’s pretty good. I’m kind of not a fan of twenty one pilots like at all, I generally avoid them. Seeing this at a 92 with 796 ratings (albeit released today, it’ll lower) made me curious though. I listened and it’s the kind of uninteresting stuff in the beginning and I’m actually not a fan of Josh’s vocals at all, but the song is actually awesome when it gets loud. Tyler guy has a good screaming voice, I like it, I liked hearing it. Sucks I have to listen to ... read more

Pavement - Terror Twilight

78——>83
Now that I adore the band this album is much better

——————

A nice time: really good but somewhat of a letdown.

This is a really good album, however; my review may be kinda negative because I really expected to love this. Terror Twilight honestly is missing the real passion from earlier Pavement works. Obviously, there is Spit on a Stranger, a beautiful, near-perfect song and an incredible opener, but after that there isn’t ... read more

The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Part One
71

Extremely peculiar, but quite nice at times.

A record with some high ass highs, and some low ass lows. There are multiple great songs that do totally new things and can really blow me away, I don’t really hear music like this. There are also songs that are just fucking unbearable, godawful, painful sound.

The experimentation as a whole kind of pays off in my opinion. A few of the songs are more spoken word poems with instrumentals than they are songs, and it works perfectly on 1906, ... read more

Remember Sports - All of Something
78

A charming pleasant-fest that doesn’t really do wrong.

I really enjoyed All of Something. Coming in with a great opener, and ending with a great closer, the album is consistently a really pleasant time. There isn’t really anything particularly mind blowing here (well maybe Bummed Out) but there’s no harsh flaws, no misses, it’s just a real good time. I adore it.

The main girl Carmen’s voice is incredible, it is exactly what this sound and genre calls for. The ... read more

Vundabar - Gawk
73

He howls on Worn / Wander lmao

I quite liked it! Gawk does what it tries and achieves what it attempts very well, I enjoyed the album. It’s cool and has a very neat sound, I’m pretty into it. The whole thing is a sick ass vibe, and there are some great songs: Oulala, Ash In the Sun, and of course Alien Blues. Gawk is a good time and I can dance with my legs to it. The record lacks any genuine misses, no bad songs here. There are spots of mediocrity, like Bust or Darla, but nothing ... read more

Vundabar - Surgery And Pleasure
68

Mostly a drag; even when it’s fast, it remains slow.

I knew of Vundabar for a while, only their hit Alien Blues though. I later saw my favorite band Car Seat Headrest live, and guess who opened for them? Vundabar. They were AMAZING. The stage presence these mfs had, they could put on a show. This made me very interested in their new album, Surgery and Pleasure. After being blown away by them live, I thought “Could I be a Vundabar fan?” Well, after listening to their newest ... read more

Dinosaur Jr. - Without a Sound
76

Dinosaur Jr. is the absolute king of “even in this mid ass song, we’ll have a fucking incredible guitar solo”.

An album with one of the greatest openers of all time and followed by a song that to me feels 90s out of its mind, Without a Sound is, even when it gets loud, a calm and relaxing experience that has me tapping my foot a lot.

It’s not particularly filled with awesome songs, but there’s not really major misses. It keeps the same atmosphere and sound ... read more

Alex G - Headlights
57

An empty waste of time.

The songs are just so nothing. I’m not necessarily bored by the songs, they just feel so void of substance. There is nothing going on; every song is a deflated balloon. Every song I just go “yeah, okay”. I remember when I first heard Afterlife and I was disappointed. I thought it might just be a miss, I did NOT expect it to be the best song on the album. Afterlife is one of the few moments I smell some personality. Louisiana has real potential if it ... read more
