Nothing declares itself more as a late nineties/early noughties time capsule than Fever, which is a slightly dated but still delightful nu-disco powerhouse of an album. A modern(ish) classic, if you will.
Favourite Song: Love At First Sight
Best: More More More, Can't Get You Out of my Head, Fever, Give It To Me, Fragile, In Your Eyes, Love Affair, Your Love
Worst: Burning Up
Like many recent enjoyers of Sleep Token, I was introduced to the band via The Summoning, which is easily one of my favourite songs of this year, and looking at their work two years prior to that song, it's easy to tell that this is a band who loves to warp around genres through sheer creative will. Sure this could predominantly be coined as metal, but it feels so much more, as an eclectic and ambitious collage of pop, electronica and rock.
The songs toy with emotional fragility and the ... read more
That! Felt good! She did it again!
Jessie Ware's follow up to WYP is a victory lap of poppy nu-disco sultriness, which comes across as more compact but slightly less daring in terms of a range of sounds. The first half of the album is excellent, with countless bangers, anthems and dancefloor grooves, but the second half is a slight let down. It's still generally good, but aside from Freak Me Now the last five tracks feel a little too safe and standard for Ware's attempted genres. For instance ... read more
I do like what Architects is going for on this album, it's just that every song sounds exactly the same.
Favourite Song: Memento Mori
Best: Nihilist, Deathwish, Phantom Fear
Worst: All Love is Lost
Although not as immediately striking as Silent Alarm, Bloc Party's sophomore album takes its sweet time and delivers a spacey, ethereal take on indie rock. It's an eclectic mix, but it's one that only grows with each listen.
Favourite Song: Uniform
Best: Song for Clay, Hunting for Witches, Waiting For The 7.18, The Prayer, On, Where Is Home?, Kreuzberg, Flux, Sunday
Worst: I Still Remember
Good vibes: the album. I wish there was a little more meat though at the start and end of the album, but the middle is the nice chunky stuff that makes disco as fun as it is.
Favourite Song: Strandbar
Best: Intro, Preben Goes to Acapulco, Svensk Sås, Delorean Dynamite, Johnny and Mary, Alfonso Muskedunder, Swing Star Pt. 1
Worst: Leisure Suit Preben
London Grammar are a strange unit in music. On one hand you could argue that their music is mesmerising and ethereal. It's a large spectacle of soft background collages supporting a powerful female voice in the centre. On the other hand you could very well just say it's straight up boring. Looking at both hands, for me I realised that they delved into both at various points on If You Wait.
Indie, especially in its pop form, started to expand massively in the 2010's, and I suppose that London ... read more
A decent rock album, but it's massively bloated with too much unjustified sameness.
Favourite Song: Like a Stone
Best: Cochise, Show Me How to Live, Gasoline, What You Are, Shadow on the Sun, Hypnotise
Worst: Exploder
A really great debut, with a flawless blend of electronic and metal serenaded by impeccable vocals. I also have developed such a sweet spot for melodic metal that it's not even funny anymore.
Favourite Song: The Summit
Best: Sun Killer, Hurt You, Yellowjacket, Secret Garden, Holy Roller, We Live In A Strange World, Halcyon, Circle With Me, Constance
Worst: Eternal Blue
A quaint cut of art pop.
Favourite Song: Feel You
Best: Silhouette, Sea Calls Me Home, Everytime Boots, Betsy On The Roof
Worst: Vasquez
A heavenly summation of all of Deftones' best and most varied parts.
Favourite Song: Tempest
Best: Swerve City, Romantic Dreams, Leathers, Poltergeist, Entombed, Gauze, Rosemary, What Happened to You?
Worst: Goon Squad
The state of British indie is still intact with Cub, and Wunderhorse are a promising new addition to modern rock's trajectory. Although the band gets a bit too slow at times, their light shines brightest in their more creatively liberating and faster tracks which hold more potent emotional baggage. From the heartfelt journey in Teal, to the bitterness in Leader of the Pack, to the infatuation in Purple, Wunderhorse's sound clearly peaks when their songs take on a life of their own. All they ... read more
As my favourite JPEG album and my second favourite Danny album, SCARING THE HOES is further proof that experimental hip hop is the pulsing heart keeping the creativity of the hip hop alive, without sacrificing too much fun in the process.
This is the best that Peggy's production has ever been, and although Danny isn't as strong on here as he is on Atrocity Exhibition, he still fits the beats incredibly well. But yeah, this really is the Peg show. He's at his literal peak on every single front, ... read more
Their weakest album that I've heard thus far, but still pretty good and one of their more cinematic albums.
Favourite Song: Shake it Out
Best: Only If For A Night, What The Water Gave Me, No Light No Light, Seven Devils, Heartlines, Spectrum, Leave My Body
Worst: Breaking Down
A fine collection of tracks, but Blood Bank and Woods really outweigh the other songs massively.
Favourite Song: Blood Bank
Best: Woods
Worst: Babys
Adding 9000 more gecs was clearly the right trajectory for the power duo, because this album has somehow surpassed their prior by a decent margin. I'd say it's 'slightly' more accessible than their last, but it's still a 100 gecs album, so it remains as batshit as you'd expect. There's also a lot more welcomed diversity in the sounds of the song. Their prior album remained fairly consistent in a similar sound all throughout, but on here there's great pop songs, a Rage Against The Machine song, ... read more
Silent Alarm is a 2000's rock revival intensive foot tapper of an album, with back to back bangers all throughout. But differently to other post-punk albums from bands like Interpol and The Strokes, I didn't gel too much with the slower tracks, apart from those which had absolutely euphoric choruses like on So Here We Are. Other than that, this is a perfect time capsule for British 2000's rock, and one that still sounds pristine almost two decades after its release.

Undeniably mystical.
Favourite Song: If Nothing Breaks, Nothing Moves
Best: When Did the Taste Leave Your Mouth, Leaving, Slow Dance, Vows & Ceremony
Worst: N/A
Desire is definitely a step up from Pang, but there's too many slow songs for my liking. It works as a cohesive album stringing together all the tracks, however there's a few too many songs that sound the same to make Desire a contender against the stronger usual suspects of art pop albums. Still, there's a few bops and it's a well produced experience, it's just tainted by sameness and Caroline's need to sing in really weird and unsatisfying ways.

Wow, I can't believe I made this album.
Some nice whimsical indie rock, half made by one of the greatest actors of all time.
Favourite Song: Pa Pa Power
Best: Dead Hearts, In The Room Where You Sleep, Buried In Water, My Body's A Zombie For You, Young & Tragic, Lose Your Soul, Dead Man's Bones
Worst: Paper Ships
