I used to have LLCJ higher on my rankings but after realising the skill and impact of Kool Moe Dee his outbreak seems marginally less impressive.

People often complain about catalogue, including Chronic he has two ultra classic albums and has another decent effort in Blue Carpet.

West Coast Legend, great legacy, and dollars + sense certifies his rapping ability.

My biggest issue with KL has always been his voice and he seems to be on a path to piss me off as much as possible with each effort - he truly does not give a fuck about vocal control on his last couple of records. In saying that he is the most dominant artist of our generation, his flow is slippery like baby oil, and GKMC is one of the greatest albums of all time. I think he would get destroyed against real street rappers such as Pusha T, Big L, Jadakiss, Kool G, Xzibit or even someone like Pharoahe Monch.

Friends will probably argue this rating is too high whilst uneducated music critics will be screaming to raise em 39 spots higher. His first album is good, and despite being inconsistent - and sacrificing sound for personality, it showcases the best version of his artistic persona. By not taking himself too seriously his lyricism was both creative and comedic. Unfortunately he goes simple jack mode on his next few albums - never go full retard. By sacrificing sound for personality completely and becoming edgy rather then comedic his albums become extremely cringe to listen to, devolve into pop and then recede further to lyrical miracle white angry rapper territory. But despite having in my eyes only one quality effort, I think his creativity in battle raps counts very highly. Dominance for an emcee is key for me. If you have a great body of work lack aura compared to your competitions then you probably just worked harder. That’s important to a degree but skill takes precedent.

I understand his solo catalogue isn’t overly crazy however, his features and work on COTC really showcase his ability. He dumbed down his work for commercial success but he was comparable to L and thats a big enough wrap.

Kool Kieth - his work in the 80s is particularly impressive and is responsible for his high placement
