Jack White - No Name
83

i'd definitely argue that this is better than any White Stripes album ngl

a consistently great garage rock album from the iconic Jack White. enough said.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
85

2 hours of Smahing Pumpkins bangers? yes please.

toe - the book about my idle plot on a vague anxiety
74

it’s cool instrumental midwest emo / math rock - and while i really like this type of music this one just didn’t quite hit that spot. It’s technically brilliant and a pretty good listen but didn’t really hit that emotional chord that, for example, some of the instrumental cuts on American Football hit.

Joni Mitchell - Blue
83

Undeniable.

Classic/10

きのこ帝国 [Kinoko Teikoku] - 渦になる [Uzu ni naru]
83

a consistently great album, with fuzzy, textures and some beautiful moments. this thing is so luscious front to back - a really enjoyable listen

Duster - In Dreams
80

“thank you duster” everyone shouts in unison

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk
85

i was very skeptical of this album when i saw the astronomical user score, but it’s stayed high. My skepticism stayed too though - is this really the instant classic they say it is?

while i’m not AS convinced as the users are, but then again i’d be very surprised to give a synthpop album an 89, this is some pretty good shit. It’s ambitious, powerful, and bold, while also being ever so smooth, classy and luxurious.

Hum - Downward Is Heavenward
87

did someone say alt rock, post-hardcore AND shoegaze????????

i took far too long to listen to Hum didn’t i.

this thing is delicious, it really is. it’s a whirlwind of guitar fuzz and distortion with tight, alt metal/numetal drumming, but you don’t mind the wind, it’s almost welcomed in the warmth of the vocals and the atmospheres. lovely lovely stuff.

Fontaines D.C. - Romance
91

"To be creatively understood by too many people feels like flies settling all over your clothes and all over your face, and every now and then, you have to fucking shake them off in order to see who you are again" said frontman Grian in the build up to the release of 'Romance', the Irish groups 4th release. And Fontaines D.C. do exactly that on this record. [a long review]

Fontaines D.C. are one of my very very very favourite bands (pun not intended), so this might ... read more

Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About
84

i feel like if you know what Modest Mouse sound like, you can apply that to the general idea you get from the album name and be fairly accurate every time. this is especially true here, as ‘This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About’ is such a great, earnest depiction of someone feeling extremely empty in their existence.

Modest Mouse really are the masters of sad emo-fied indie rocking

English Teacher - This Could Be Texas
76

perfectly okay indie rock record, nothing too crazy at all, i like it but it didn't really move me at all

Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!
80

almost definitely Lana’s best work - but it still sees itself feeling a little bland the longer it goes on, though it has a lovely run in the beginning. While it needs more bits of spice intertwined, it had some tastings of it in the first half which stopped it from being a genuine drag. Individually though, Lana Del Rey delivers a strong, consistent and genuine performance.

Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today
76

came out of this pretty underwhelmed tbh - i love post punk and art punk and i thought this sounded right up my street but it just didn’t resonate. A solid back end helps it out but i hoped for better

Silver Jews - American Water
83

Pavement but make it 10% Wilco

Crying - Beyond the Fleeting Gales
85

they weren’t lying when they said power pop, i feel like i can break the cycle of sisyphus but like in a twinky ally type of way.

what a joy to listen to, ‘Beyond the Fleeting Gales’ is such a fun, explosive power pop / indie rock record. it’s such a fun burst of catchy, tight, punchy songs that you can’t get enough of, with some really nice mellow cuts in between.

16 Horsepower - Sackcloth 'n' Ashes
81

*recommendation given based off of Fontaines D.C. - Skinty Fia*

‘Cowboys discover The Cure’

I’ll be honest, i saw americana listed as a genre and lost my mind, i immediately expected to be disappointed, especially when i was hoping for some cool Post-Punk… but i was proven a fool as soon as the first track finished - the gothic influences run much deeper than the americana ones, especially on the brilliant opening 3 track run, which had that punkish twinge i was ... read more

파란노을 [Parannoul] - Sky Hundred
84

is it gorgeous? yes, absolutely. is it THAT much better than their previous work? not for me.

Parannoul is an artist i've been familiar with for a while now, 'After the Magic' was one of my very favourite projects of 2023, and this year they've followed it up again with another banger. focusing more on the noisy fuzz than the dreamy indietronica of their previous solo record, 'Sky Hundered' is a really colourful album, bursting with walls of shoegaze and ... read more

Begt - The Shortest Album

i would say 'it's definitely an album alright!' but is it even????????
