I'm not the biggest fan of doom metal, but I do love shoegaze, and this shit slaps. After a 4 year gap, Grivo is back with an album that entices to the core. The slow tempo of the album is worth the landscapes and atmospheres this delivers. This is some good ass music.

It definitely has a lot going for it, but it's not super memorable.

The lead singer has a really nice voice, it sounds almost country to me, but in a good way. All of the songs are good, but the album lacks variety. Calling it shoegaze may be a bit of a stretch though, shoegaze element are there but it's not exactly what I'd think of when I see it's called shoegaze.

Although I now prefer ILIIAITE, there was a time when I very much enjoyed The Cold Sun. Seeing as it's been a while since my last listen, I've decided to revisit this album.
1. The Cold Sun
With an almost retro aspect to it, this sets the mood for the album perfectly.
2. It's Yours
The first full song is catchy as hell, with an earworm of a chorus.
3. Dance On My Skin
A cold, chilling atmosphere is what stands out most here. The biggest flaw is that parts of it don't feel quite as full as ... read more
Short, sweet, and to the point. No misses here.

Despite the somewhat confusing name, this a pretty good EP. It's a good mix of shoegaze and a little bit of punk/post hardcore.

Good, but the only songs that really stand out are Dweeb and Waitress.
Growing up, I was always been surrounded by Christian ideas and imagery. Pictures of Jesus and angels hung on the walls of my grandparents house. We prayed before dinner every day. Every Sunday we would go to church for 3 hours. We would listen to Christian music in the car, as boring as it was. I wasn't particularly fond of it, but this lifestyle was normal. Eventually, we stopped going to church. We didn't pray every day. The pictures didn't stand out to me. Music doesn't often evoke ... read more
Apart from the few moments that had me impressed, this album is run of the mill indie rock. Shoegaze elements can be heard, but reverb soaked vocals and guitars are the farthest it gets into the sound.

It's hard to put into words why I like this album so much. Is it the fact that it's shoegaze and I love shoegaze? Maybe. Is it the fact that I've never heard of this band until now and they're surprisingly good? Maybe. I'm not sure if I would consider this "blackgaze" or "metalgaze". It goes right up to the line but doesn't really cross it. The screams are there, but they're both infrequent and usually quiet. But when they are there, this album slaps even harder.

I was initially turned off from this album simply because I didn't like the cover of it. I've now realized that was a mistake, this album is great. It's kinda short lived, at a runtime of just over 30 minutes, but it pays off because there aren't any misses in here, it's hit after hit.
Apart from being heavier, Underoath doesn't accomplish to create a memorable experience with this album. The vocals are grating, the lyrics are generic, and the instrumentation is dull. I found myself enjoying a few songs, like Thorn and Take a Breath, but even then, the album failed to even hook me.
