Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

LOVE LETTER TO VINYL: TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY

Although I know the game, I know how it works. I still fall prey to consumerism. It is perhaps a necessary by-product of living in a consumerist society. I have my blindspots; although I have avoided 99% of traps, there are a few things I fall prey to. My biggest weakness is vinyl. I have been collecting since I was fourteen, and it is one of the things I fail to make smart decisions on when purchasing. I have a great, full collection, but one with ... read more

Jane Remover - Census Designated
100

I don’t think I'll ever be able to describe in words what Frailty means to me. It relesed at the perfect time. I think Jane is only a year or two older than me, so the themes and motifs throughout the album really resonated with me. I’ve lived my whole life as a closeted queer, and up until recently, the art I consume was one of the only ways I could express that queerness. So having an album so assuredly unsure in itself, so confident in its own awkwardness and insecurity, was ... read more

By Storm & Injury Reserve - Double Trio
97

By the Time I Get To Phoenix is a earth shattering record. The trio broke so much new ground that I don't think the rap game has even begun it's response. It's probably gonna be many many years for anyone to get close to replicating what Injury Reserve have accomplished. Both doubling as the final work of one of the best hip hop outfits of the 2010s, as well as being one of the most exciting releases to come out of the underground since Death Grips broke out. Injury Reserves last album is one ... read more

Jane Remover - Royal Blue Walls
NR

Whenever Jane drops anything it’s terrible for me because it’s the only thing I wanna listen to. Frailty was the most exciting release of last year and Jane is still slaying. The singing on both songs is great and the lyrics are more moving and poetic than anything on Frailty. I do hope we still get some more “wtf am i losing my mind” production moments on an eventual album but for now Jane is sounding more more mature and confident than ever.

tobi lou - Non-Perishable
77

I've been waiting for Tobi Lou to drop an album for fucking ever man. The moment I heard Lingo Star, his three-track ep, I was hooked. There is no one else in hip hop right now that I can just vibe to like Tobi Lou. He's innovating but not in an obvious way, I'd say he's on the experimental wave but if you heard Babycakes or The Last Dance at a club you wouldn't bat an eye. It's pop-rap for nerds, it appeals so heavily to me that I feel crazy showing anyone else. But this is the future of ... read more

BROCKHAMPTON - SATURATION II
93

Brockhampton is officially over...for a while at least. For the fans, it's been clear the end was nigh. Roadrunner was a satisfying conclusion, and talk of Puppy being released was exciting(fuck you Kevin), but these guys are done. I hope everybody is still on good terms but something has felt missing since Roadrunner dropped. It was obvious some members weren't there for BH7 and honestly the concept of Brockhampton was running thin. It's better to leave it here before they are forced to quit. ... read more

Frank Ocean - Endless (Remastered)
100

Endless is Endless, what do I even write about it. Frank Ocean creates some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. It seems like the conversation around Endless revolves around its relationship with Blonde but they offer different experiences. Blonde is a colorful catchy RnB opus, while Endless is much colder and more patient. The musical interludes let the listener soak in this muted world Frank has created, hell I'd argue most of the songs are interludes. On Blonde almost every song can ... read more

8485 - plague town
79

This is a solid ep. I've been following 8485 for a little while now and this isn't what I expected, but her lyrical and singing capabilities are still here in spades. Songs like hangar and southview are wonderful angsty singer-songwriter jams. I do hope that she gets more experimental with her future projects because this does seem derivative of other acts, but this fits my tastes pretty well.

BROCKHAMPTON - ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE
90

The light was very much worth the wait. I know this album might not be for everyone, but I am a Brockhampton shill so of course, I was going to love this. Roadrunner is the most vulnerable Brockhampton album to date. Even if you don’t love the second half of this album, I feel the emotional potency can’t be ignored. Surprisingly Joba is the star of this album, and his contributions truly make you feel the weight of his grief. I haven’t broken down to a song in a while like The ... read more

Olivia Rodrigo - deja vu
NR

This new Lorde track is awesome!!! Love the lyrics, and she just really has such a captivating voice. Excited to finally get the follow up to Melodrama considering how obsessed i’ve been with it lately. It’s so refreshing to see such an innovative and original artist climbing the charts lately, very excited for the album.

Dream & PmBata - Roadtrip
NR

Manages to sound like it was created by an ai while also having the worst/funniest choruses i’ve ever heard. Imagine writing these lyrics as an adult man. Painfully bland and obvious metaphor that will be consumed down the gullet of his cult like fan base, like ants rummaging through a rotting piece of bread I left out last night.

8485 - 1:15

Who let me get this gay? And why does IT HURT MY PRIDE WHEN YOU MAKE ME SMILE CAUSE THEY FALL ALL OVER TOU LIKE ALL THE TIME

this deadass sounds like a fnaf parody.....yes i like it

BROCKHAMPTON - iridescence
96

Listening to this lately, reminded why it’s one of my favorites. This album is becoming somewhat of a classic, i’m seeing more people discover the is album who are getting into alternative hip hop. And every fucking day some dickwad is in the Brockhampton reddit(yes i’m a virgin, why do you ask?) about how iridescence is underrated, and for some reason NO ONE likes this album but him. Well newsflash teenage boys, i had the wrong Brockhampton opinion before it was cool. I think ... read more

Kevin Abstract - American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story
95

American Boyfriend means a lot to me. This album might not be one of the most original, or well crafted. But what carries it is it’s ability to capture emotion. Even though i might not be quite as gay as Kevin, i can still relate to pretty much everything here. Not only is that aspect relatable but also just adolescent love in general, that incredible euphoria of being young and finding a connection. It might not be an album for everyone, but when i’m feeling alone and like shit ... read more
