For an album as stripped back sounding as this one, I don't think the runtime should be as long as it is. Not that 45 minutes is a lengthy runtime for an album, but when you make this kind of industrial hip hop, you need to be diverse in your production to negate the feeling that some songs blend into others. The album is good, and has some pretty incredible highlights (especially in the first half). However, some of these songs just sound too samey. It becomes an issue when you realize that ... read more
When this album is at its highest, it puts you in a pretty good mood. Makes you feel like everything is simple, which is great feeling. The issue is the mid point of this record having absolutely no redeeming quality other than sounding like it could put me to bed fast.
Pretty solid. First 2 tracks wipe the last 2 imo but that doesn’t mean they are bad songs. Can’t wait for an album from these guys.
This mixtape doesn’t even make me feel sad, it just makes me feel like utter shit.
This record is sort of odd for a Kendrick record. It doesn’t feel like it has a very present message -at least compared to good kid m.A.A.d city or To Pimp A Butterfly- and it doesn’t feel as hit focused as an album like DAMN, but both of these things play to the albums strengths. The mental health type theme of this album is there but it doesn’t feel like the entire album revolves around it, which makes the songs where Kendrick is having fun feel like they aren’t too ... read more
Some of the best storytelling I’ve ever heard in an album. Few minor dips but this thing is amazing
Good songs but nothing to take away from this in my opinion. Felt like a chore to get through rather than something I wanted to do. Also, is sober even that good? It’s alright but it is FAR from top 5 gambino
On one hand, this album changed my life and got me into music. On the other hand the filler on this album sucks. This album is way longer than it needs to be. Lots of great songs but the extra bullshit is meaningless.
It has its moments, but it sure is messy. Not in the way The Lamb As Effigy feels messy, more of a directionless kind of messy.
Definitely better than SAT 1 but I think SAT 2 might be better. Super consistent project, great verses, and some astonishingly catchy choruses.
The Intro and outro are really good. However I finished this album 5 seconds ago and I can’t remember anything else. It was all just meh, and this would warrant a lower score if it wasn’t for Age Of Consent and Leave Me Alone.
(My original thoughts before relistening)
This record is kinda weird. I guess not the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard, but I don’t think I’ve heard anything like this. The instrumentation is good for what it needs to be. My biggest issue with this record is how torn I am about the frontman’s - Will Toledo - voice. Sounds very overblown, which has its moments in the record but I don’t know if it works for every song here. Another gripe I have with this album are the ... read more
Pretty good record, not much to take away other than it sounds like Cole is having fun.
Mostly pretty average for JID, but the highlights bump this album up a few points for me.
Relistened cause I remember liking this way more but boy did it drag
