Pretty much everything about this album means I should probably hate it, but for some reason I think I love it?
I don't think there are words to describe how talented Simz is. NO THANK YOU is yet another terrific release, albeit less dramatic and imposing than the preceding SIMBI. If she isn't mentioned as one of the greats by now, then something is wrong in this world.
Really enjoyable and completely immersive. I actually found the last 3 songs to be the highlight here, however the whole album is quite a joy to listen too. Will certainly be checking out more from The Soft Pink Truth after listening to this :)
Beautiful. There aren't really any other words to describe it
As far as pop albums go, this one is actually pretty enjoyable. The first half of the album is really quite solid - with First Aid and Post Humorous being standout tracks (the final chorus of Post Humorous is heavenly). It gets a bit bland and predictable in the second half, but as an overall release, this isn't too shabby!
Honestly, I just found the general sound of this album to be quite annoying and grating, especially the vocals in the first 5 or 6 tracks. 'Gyroscope' onwards introduces a different sound which I found more enjoyable, but still nothing that overly impressed me. It probably just isn't my thing given how many people seem to love it, but I can't see myself returning to this album in the future.
Ehhh, the first half is fairly weak overall with nothing spectacular and generally quite a mediocre sound to most of the tracks. Everything from the Danny Brown feature onwards is a decent improvement, but again nothing that really blew me away - instead landing in the 'good' rather than 'great' tier. It's a good album by all means, but not quite the level that you would expect given the track ratings.
Best track - house settling, fantasyworld
Worst - tracks 1-4
Exactly what you want from an EP - a short burst of tracks that really show off the range of an artist or band. There is a real 'spacey' theme to this release as personified by the album cover, but each track is enjoyable in its own unique way and it makes for a really pleasant listen! My personal favourite is 'Space Cadet' as the looping drums and catchy chorus make it a real earworm. At only 25 mins long, there is nothing for you to lose checking this out :)
My biggest complaint is that I wish it was longer! Some brilliant tracks and a unique, captivating sound that makes you want to explore of Saint Jude's music.
Starts out really strong, but then struggles to stay consistent after 3 or 4 tracks. Decent, but nothing too special.
Intense and enjoyable, but not as impressive as some of their other work.
Building Steam with a Grain of Salt is an absolute stunner of a track. The rest of this album is likewise very impressive, a really enjoyable listen from beginning to end :)
Edit 83 -> 91
Idk what I was thinking scoring this only an 83, it's absolutely brilliant and definitely deserving of a 90+
This albums biggest strength is also it's biggest weakness - predictably. Even on a first listen, you can tell when drops are coming, how songs will evolve, and at times even how the lyrics will go. This makes for an enjoyable experience, and the tracks themselves are solid too, however the predictability coupled with the length of the tracks means that quite often, songs feel stretched and repetitive. It's not a critical issue, but does detract a fair amount from the overall listening ... read more
A surprisingly average album - nothing spectacular and in all honesty quite dated in it's sound. It's a fairly consistent album with few real weaknesses, but far from my favourite album. Underwhelming may be the best way of describing this
An interesting release that grabs your attention on first listen. It's far from perfect, but enjoyable enough to stick on and groove with every once in a while. :)
Really enjoyable, hard to pinpoint any real weaknesses in this album, but also hard to nail down any standouts for myself as well. Overall however, it all blends into one nice long listen in the best way possible. Certainly worth listening to!
