Whilst a reasonably solid album, it just did not captivate me anywhere near as much as I originally hoped it would. It is full of energy, yet I feel like that energy falls flat quite often throughout. A fun enough listen, but no more than that.
'Bedroom/Boredom' burst onto the scene with the wildly entertaining EP that is 'I Wouldn't Worry'; full of energy from beginning to end. The group bring an upbeat collection of catchy riffs that pair with fairly down, depressing vocals to create a unique sound that nestles in perfectly to the UK indie scene.
The opening track - Pill - showcases this to the max. From the get-go, the drums capture you and you can't help but tap along, with the raspy vocals and guitar riffs pairing up perfectly. ... read more
It's good. Very Good.
Mindblowingly powerful throughout, 'Ants From Up There' may potentially be the last we see of 'Black Country, New Road'. Filled with incredible highs, it takes everything that was great about their debut album and takes it that step further, with the sound so incredibly potent that you can't help but find yourself lost in it. This album was hyped to the extreme, and even still it manages to exceed those expectations comfortably. To many, 'The Place Where He Inserted the ... read more
An incredibly strong album from beginning to end - 'Sunglasses' is the one track that really stood out and caught my attention. The only negative I have is that I didn't find this album sooner!
Edit: it keeps growing on me! 92->96
Currently an 86 based on what I have heard, will update with a final rating when I can
Man, this band really know how to make an album drag along way longer than it should. There are some good tracks here in this album, with that classic Palace sound that so many people have come to love - but it just feels like it takes an absolute eternity to get through. As with some of their previous work, there is just so much unnecessary filler that all sounds the same - if you aren't paying attention then this album would sound like one long 48min track.
I like Palace as a band, but this ... read more
A really impressive LP from a duo who sadly left us far too early. A real unique, fun sound runs through all the tracks, with some really nice vocals and great instrumentals across the board. 'What Once Was' is an absolutely outstanding track that shows that they really were destined for greatness.
A strong debut, exhibiting a unique sound that entrances you and sweeps you away on a magical journey.
Personally much preferred 'All My Demons' as an album to this, as I feel it better exhibits her vocal range and unique sound. There are some strong tracks in this album though, but it does feel far more pop-y than her debut, and I'm not convinced that it's a good thing. It will definitely make those tracks in particular more enjoyable to your causal listener as they are pretty well-produced, have strong beats, and a catchy sound - but I feel like it limits her talents quite a lot, and it ... read more
As much as I've grown to dislike Mike Skinner in recent years (he really has become a bit of a twat) I can't take away how strong this album is as an original project. It takes the quintessential sounds of British hip-hop at the time and recreates them in their rawest, more unique form - it really does sound like an album made by some random guy in his living room, and that's one of the most charming things about it.
Skinner has a really unique style of 'rap' throughout this album, ... read more
Whilst nothing groundbreaking or incredible, this is a pretty solid album from beginning to end. Many of the tracks feature catchy vocals and fun rhythms that will keep you hooked to the next song at the very least. At times it feels like it becomes confused in terms of suddenly switching between tracks, meaning that at times the album becomes clunky rather than flowing from track to track. Other than that, this is a pretty decent album that is worth checking out if you have the time.
A good album with some seriously strong tracks. 'Heart Attack' really didn't do it for me, but outside of that the rest of the tracks were consistently solid. 'Black Oak' is utterly addictive and is comfortably my favourite track from this album.
I will preface this by saying that I do think her 'Live at Electric Lady' versions of many of these songs are just that little bit better than the studio versions. Saying that however, this is a really pleasant album with a really warm, beautiful vocal performance. The production is well done, and the whole album is a nice listen, however it does drop off a tad in the middle section - none of the songs are poor though, just a bit weaker than the stronger tracks elsewhere in the album. Nothing spectacular, a bit repetitive and their sound is nothing groundbreaking. It's a decent enough album though and is reasonably enjoyable from beginning to end. 'Fool Moon' is my top track from here.
Edit: Perhaps a bit harsh with my original score - after another listen through it is more enjoyable than i remember :)
Parcels' live performance of their best hits at the time - a combination of standalone singles and tracks from their debut album 'Parcels' - is a performance to behold. Available to watch in its entirety on YouTube or listen to as an album, it showcases the Aussies at their very best, with musicianship at its very finest and tracks flowing seamlessly from one another. For reference, I will be reviewing this as an album more than anything.
You enter the album, quite literally, with 'Enter', ... read more
