Just didn't hit it with this album, enjoyed it far less than the other Bjork album I had already listened to. I can see why some people would love this, but personally I just couldn't get into the album and by the end it felt like a chore to finish off the album. Perhaps in the future I'll listen again and see if my rating changes, but for now it stays at 77.
Like others have said, overall this is a pretty 'meh' album - but there are some really good tracks in the first half of the album. Edge of Town in particular for me is an absolute stand-out track that elevates this album up into the 70s
My first listen through of this album made me feel ways I don't think I've ever felt before - an incredible album that is as dynamic as it is intriguing and unnerving
Can't believe I forgot to review this, saved it in my library and then overlooked it for months! Regardless, this is a really strong album that envelopes you with its jazzy funkiness. Some of the tracks on this album are stellar, and the whole experience is thoroughly enjoyable. Check it out when you can!
Thanks Brad for bringing this album up in a recent video (Strange Songs I think?) - these 4 tracks are pure brilliance and leave you beyond satisfied. Watermelon Man is probably my favourite due to its unique sound, but all 4 tracks are excellent, making this an easy 90+ in my books.
A pretty decent album that does feel a little confused in its direction at times. Some really good songs, some weaker tracks - but overall a pretty good listen. I'm not sure the album as a whole has done enough to convince me to return to it in the future, but a couple of tracks will be sticking around for sure.
Best track - Control
I'll admit that this is not really a genre or style of music that I usually enjoy or listen to, but this album was a pleasant listen and the 40 minutes flew by. I can certainly see why so many people rated this so highly, on a personal level though it just isn't for me. I would still suggest you check it out though :)
Perhaps controversial, but this album just did not hit the mark for me on a personal level. The sounds were at times spectacular, but outside of that I found myself unable to connect with this album at all - some tracks felt like they had come straight from a theatre musical, other times the religious elements of tracks smothered everything else to be found in a track. I'm sure many people will enjoy the experience that comes with this album, but for me whilst it sounded impressive at times, it ... read more
Stunning album that straddles the edge of being 'too long' - most of the tracks are very enjoyable but I do feel like a few lack the ability to stand alone independently from the album. A fantastic album that is certainly worth checking out. Personal favourite track - #3 'Come On! Feel the Illinoise!'
This album is an experience, constructed beautifully from beginning to end.
I had high expectations going into this album, and it still blew me away. It is incredibly catchy and the differing sounds just encapsulate you throughout. The 56 minutes just fly by when you are listening to this album.
The whole album is a blur, making it feel like only 3 or 4 songs but the whole experience is incredible. Definitely worth checking out when you get an opportunity.
