C’mon yall. This is dog shit. A bunch of messy mixes, Ty adds pretty much nothing outside of a few hooks and a genuinely good verse on Talking. It’s seriously so frustrating, every time a song starts to pick up momentum, Kanye decides to drop an absolute fucking nuke on it with the worst bar you’ve ever heard and just derail everything. Let’s be serious, we know Kanye can be better than this, we’ve heard Kanye be better than this. This is garbage.
A really solid outing from AJJ. I’ve really loved the balance of noise-pop, punk, and folk tracks that made up Christmas Island and The Bible 2. Glad to see that style has seemed to make a reappearance on this record. Strawberry (Probably) is a great opener and the new version of I Wanna Be Your Dog 2 stands out as a highlight. There are a few tracks that don’t quite work in my opinion. But otherwise this is a pretty respectable record from AJJ. Seeing them on tour soon so I’m ... read more
If any album deserves a 10/10 its this one.
This album is really devastating but it paints a picture of pain so perfectly. Truly a feat of songwriting excellence. I'm a little nervous to see where the band goes from here without Isaac, but excited as well, since every performance on this record, not just Isaac's, is beyond excellent.
Walking at a Downtown Pace, Black Widow Spider, and Homo Sapien really set high expectations for this album for me. Unfortunately, those tracks made up the bulk of the highlights. Other standout tracks included Marathon of Anger, Plant Life, and Pulcinella. The rest of the tracks however, resembled a more dull version of Wide Awake.
Ginger is by far brockhamptons most cohesive and concise album to date. That being said, it is also their most emotional. the boys have been through a lot in the past couple of years, and I see this album as a reflection on what they have been through. I think this album is very important to Brockhampton, and I think it does a good job of displaying their current mental state.
Stylistically this album is a bit of a shift. Instead of a mainly hardcore experimental hip hop album, Brockhampton ... read more
While not as crazy and mind boggling as "A Laughing Death in Meatspace" TFS has come through with another interesting album. "Braindrops" is noticeably less abrasive than "A Laughing Death in Meatspace" which unfortunately I think is more to their detriment, I really loved the heavy influence of noise rock in their previous album, and not that the noise rock influences aren't a big part of "Braindrops", TFS has just instead taken a different approach ... read more
David Berman's final project, in my opinion, will go down as one of his best. The songwriting is emotionally deep and touching. Easily one of the best written albums of the year. This album is profoundly sad to begin with but the context of David Berman's death only adds to to the weight of this project. Berman branches out a little bit with Purple Mountains. While instrumentally Purple Mountains has Berman's typical indie-rock sound, they take on elements of country, which beautifully ... read more
Peggy is back with another classic. After his groundbreaking 2018 album, Veteran, Peggy has decided to take a much more melodic route, while still staying in the experimental hip hop lane. The production is very interesting, it is less harsh and abrasive than Peggy's music has been in the past, however that is not necessarily a bad thing, as he comes through with beautifully smooth tracks such as "Free the Frail and "BasicBitchTearGas". While AMHAC doesn't necessarily have an ... read more
I really don’t have much of a solid opinion either way on this album. There are some really interesting elements including Trippie’s voice, which I actually find really interesting. And there are some pretty good tracks on the front half of the album, I do think it fizzles out towards the back half of the album though. Trippie doesn’t do anything on this album to really make himself stand out from the rest of the trap artists in hip hop at the moment. I do especially enjoy the ... read more
What the fuck is this????
Don’t get me wrong, I like Chance. I legitimately think that his three previous mixtapes are pretty good! He has shown himself to be a good rapper, a good writer, pretty unique, and a guy that can bring a really fun energy to the track... but hot damn, hot garbage, hot shit... this is white hot trash. I went into this album with HIGH expectations and this album is probably one of the biggest disappointments of the entire year. Before I shit all over this thing ... read more
I can see this one growing on me the more I listen to it. But after one listen I’m pretty impressed. This is almost a total 180 from Brian. Before the singles he released for this album, I saw him as totally one dimensional, and didn’t bring much to the table. The Sailor changes that completely. Brian’s songwriting is pretty sharp on this album, but what really blows me away is the production and Rich Brian’s delivery. The production is clean and fun and has this kinda ... read more
I can see this growing on me. This is great. It mixes conscious hip hop with trap. The gospel elements are also super endearing. Cordae’s lyrics are consistently good throughout. He also doesn’t think he is deeper than he is, he seems like a pretty grounded individual. I’m excited to listen to this more. DMV 4L
I never really had a solid opinion either way on Ed Sheeran before this album. Of course, I can recognize that he is at least a talented musician, but I have never felt that his music was anything more than mediocre. Flash forward to July 12th, on that day everything changed. On a project full of collaborations, you would think that there would be at least one feature that Ed has some sort of chemistry with... right? Nope. Not a single one. Every guest on this album sounds so out of place. ... read more
I can't help but think of this album as a burst rifle, from any number of popular shooter video games, Beaver comes in with short burst of raw punk energy, and then another short burst of punk energy, after another, and so on. Although I don't speak Japanese some of the messages are pretty apparent. There is a rage that flows throughout the whole album. Sometimes this rage is regarding love, but at other points of this album this rage is pointed more towards current Japanese politics. Such as ... read more
I'll say this, black midi has established their own, personal, unique sound, on their debut album. Which is something that is incredibly impressive to begin with. schlagenheim is an incredible blend of math rock, noise, hardcore, and post-punk. The instrumentation is very creative, and not to mention the vocals. They are kinda weird, especially since they fluctuate so much from track to track, but in a way that is somewhat endearing and interesting. If anything, this has me wanting to hear ... read more
I love this, I love the direction that abstract hip hop is moving toward recently, and I think that this sound collage album from Slauson Malone, of Standing on the Corner, exemplifies it perfectly. Pulling in elements of jazz and soul, Malone creates a pretty cutting edge soundscape that just engulfs the listener.
Following the death of his mother, MIKE has come through with one of the most depressing hip hop albums I have heard in a while. While that may sound like a bad thing, it isn't. MIKE is able to translate his feelings into this album in a way that feels grounded and real to the listener. Although it does draw similarities from Earl Sweatshirt's 2018 album, "Some Rap Songs", that is understandable as they seem to be pretty close, and they make similar types of music to begin with. ... read more
9 out of 10 times an album this hyped up will fail to meet the expectations of fans. Since "Bandana" was officially announced, social media has been filled with endless hype, especially since Freddie and Madlib's last album "Piñata" pretty much became an instant classic. Luckily "Bandana" is that special 1 out of 10 times that an album meets and even exceeds the ridiculous expectations set by fans.
This album features some of Madlib's most soulful ... read more
If you came into this album wanting more of what we got from Denzel on TA13OO, chances are you were disappointed. This album is definitely different from his previous work. ZUU is truly a tribute to his home town. Everything from sound to subject matter is influenced by Miami and Southern Hip-Hop. With that in consideration, for a true Miami and southern style trap album, this is very good. Denzel’s hooks are consistently great and catchy. The production is fun and does its best not to be ... read more
After releasing one of the worst albums of the year, Logic is back with another one of the worst albums of the year. It’s so unoriginal. Making an album about people being mean to you on social media is just so stupid and it’s very hard to take seriously.
