Polyphia - New Levels New Devils
80

This album is incredibly juicy, a shining example of math rock as someone who is still learning a lot about it, but is not without a few flaws. For how great this albums base concept is, and incredibly well done guitar work, I do feel perhaps that it runs with its ideas for a little bit of a long time, and could probably use a little more variety in its songs. I think all the songs actually work really well on their own, all having their own fun flairs, but as an entire album, the concept and ... read more

Charli xcx - BRAT

I really genuinely just do not see what is so supposedly fun or great about this album to warrant the high scores its getting, because this simply is just irritating to listen to from start to finish, minus a couple fairly ok songs. Unlike CRASH, where there was at least one or two good songs, nothing here really sticks out to me, with the best songs arguably just being 8s for me at best. There's an overuse of autotune, weird production styles and sounds, and a generally just annoying sound to ... read more

Kasbo - The Learning of Urgency
70

Pretty conflicted on this album, as someone who was really quite excited for it, and really wanted to love it (I've given The Making of a Paracosm a 100 after all) but what this album really comes down to is just something that doesn't stick out near as much as The Making of a Paracosm did. This album takes a much more laid back chill house approach, rather than going for big momentous impactful emotion, and succeeds fairly decently at that, at the expense of having a lot more tracks that feel ... read more

Kasbo - The Making Of A Paracosm
100

This is an album that has grown and grown on me, with every listen I find new things to appreciate about it, new perspectives to have it, and just get to re-experience the joy that Kasbo puts on display here. It's emotional, it's vibey, it's boppy, and there's just so much to love around every corner. Sure, not every part is great, there's a few spots in the middle where the album has some somewhat simpler ideas that aren't as interesting to me, and it can be a bit long all in all dragging a ... read more

For what it's worth, I respect this album a whole lot. It leans really heavily into an old school vintage style, with kinda radio quality vocals and instrumental mixing, and while that kind of style usually is really grating and annoying to me, it doesn't bother me much here! The problem for me is just more so that I also don't really love the style, and there's not a lot here that stands out to me as stuff I want to return to a lot. The lo-fi sound is cool, but I find myself just feeling like ... read more

かめりあ [Camellia] - Blackmagik Blazing

Ugh... I don't really wanna give this album a low score, and there's still so much promise and fun in the style (not to mention, I think the base style IS fairly well done here) but this albums worst problem is that for all its best part, it drags like crazy at other points. There are so many songs with great ideas and really solid theming that just get ruined by dragging on for a million years, repeating the same drop styles again and again. Where this album really shines is when it breaks ... read more

Glass Animals - How to Be a Human Being
85

Wasn't sure fully what to expect coming into this album, as I haven't heard many Glass Animals songs, but I'm very pleasantly happy to say that this album is just full of some great bops! When they go for an energetic tune or go for some interesting ideas, they really nail it hard, especially with songs like Life Itself and The Other Side of Paradise, but they also have a nice variety of things on display beyond those too. The albums lulls a little in the middle, with some slower calmer songs ... read more

Tisoki - 01953

Man idk, this album is constantly teetering between good and bad so much, and leans on the bad/mediocre quite a lot. It's held up REALLY heavily by SENSITIVE, which is one of my favorite songs ever, but the rest of this album just kinda drags, and isn't really impressive in any specific way. Lots of mixed bag ideas, and stuff that just doesn't really land. It's got occasional bright spots, but they don't really make up for the pretty drastic lows here. Overall mixed bag, leaning more towards ... read more

Lindsey Stirling - Shatter Me
80

I do not understand at all why this album is Lindseys second lowest rated album, it's honestly quite good! Compared to her first album, this album is so much more fun, energetic, a lot better produced, and features some of her best work (Beyond The Veil and Shatter Me specifically). That being said, I can't deny that there are some... definite weird stinkers on here that drag it down. Lindseys mix of EDM is a blessing and a curse here, where on her first album it almost always dragged it down, ... read more

No Mana - I Contain Flashing Images

EDIT: 75 -> 80
This album has honestly done nothing but grow on me. I think the middle is a bit better than I gave it credit for, and the stuff around it is just really strong. It's still not perfect, but I'm finding myself liking this album more and more lately. Also, the A/V set is awesome!

This is an album that I had pretty high expectations for! And while I can't say I was completely disappointed, I was left feeling like this could've been a bit more. The album has a pretty strong ... read more

Dua Lipa - Radical Optimism

This sure isn't bad! It's just... not that good either! It's kinda mediocre overall I guess. There's a few pretty bad tracks here, but all in all I do find this to be incredibly forgettable beyond a strong start. I really don't think I have any strong desire to come back to pretty much any of this beyond a few bops, so I guess uh, whatever. /shrug

Virtual Riot - Simulation
75

I really love this album, and I really love Virtual Riot as a whole, but I gotta be real with myself on this album. This doesn't hit every time, and is riddled with an immense amount of problems, a plethora of overdone EDM styles, plenty of bland dubstep and color bass, and just doesn't hit the same as it once did back when it released. Times have changed, and this album hasn't kept up the absolute best.

HOWEVER, I still hold a huge soft spot for this album, and no amount of its problems or ... read more

Koven - Butterfly Effect
80

This album is one that holds a ton of nostalgia for me, being a peak album for me back in 2020, but nowadays it definitely doesn't hold up to being the same peak album it once was. The beginning of this album is pretty rough, featuring some rough production and kinda bland ideas throughout that only truly peak out on occasion, but from Stars onward this album stays incredibly peak. The latter half of this album is still fantastic even today, and while I think the DnB on this album was pretty ... read more

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children

Compared to Geogaddi, I feel like this album just didn't have as much of an impact on me. I recognize that this is the higher rated album by quite a large margin, but to me, while it is well put together, it just doesn't hold as memorable of an impression. It's been a bit of time since I heard Geogaddi so it's hard to directly compare, but I definitely felt like that had a greater impression on me than this did. Regardless, there are some absolutely incredible technical production work on ... read more

Karma Fields - New Age | Dark Age
65

This album has definitely not aged the best in a lot of ways, going for a sorta cyberpunk-y electronic sound that it nails at some points, and fails pretty hard at others. It also tries a lot of weird ideas that... don't usually work, but its at least a bit respectable to consider them. That being said, in a lot of ways this album also falls flat, and when its hits its lows, they are REALLY low (Scandal). It also has a pretty sluggish couple of ending tracks. That being said, at its best, its ... read more

twenty one pilots - Clancy

Went into this with the absolute lowest expectations imagineable, expecting to absolutely HATE this, but honestly... it's pretty much whatever. I don't really hate it, but I also don't really love it either. I haven't heard much Twenty one pilots besides the big radio hits, and this album isn't really convincing me I need to, but there's plenty to like to. The instrumentals are almost always good throughout, it's all well put together, and there's some pretty fun highlights from time to time, ... read more

Paark - Stonelands
90

When it comes to this album, the first thing that comes to mind is "pretty", and I think the entire album exemplifies that point extremely well! While there isn't really a whole lot of individual standout tracks here, this whole album nails a feeling of wonder, of looking out on a pretty ocean, of breezing through dense forests, and it just feels like something that you can sit back and enjoy with wonder. The moments when Paark goes all out though are where his mastery truly kicks in, ... read more

Justin OH - Welcome to the City of OZ
60

This album isn't... horrible. It has its highlights, has a pretty cool theming, and the sound style Justin OH brings to the table here is solid. I also enjoy the story it tells, but that's arguably the most frustrating part about this album as well, as the streaming services version of this album features NONE OF IT. The BEST part of this album is left completely out, which leaves multiple songs feeling drawn out, or with really long buildups or intros or outros, where THE STORY IS SUPPOSED TO ... read more

RIOT - Dogma Resistance
85

I came into this album expecting it to really fall off for me, as Brostep as a whole has grown off me massively, but honestly? This is still absolute fire. The songs here showcase RIOTs absolute peak before their massive falloff afterwards, and the songs still hold up shockingly well for being kinda plain brostep if I really look at it objectively. The best part of this album however is the off drops of all the songs, which are such fun world building styles, with lots of lil stories in between ... read more
