"Since I Left You" was one of the first full album experiences I've ever had and it still stands as one of my favorite electronic albums of all time. I was also there for "Wildflower" when it came out and, while it doesn't share the exact same qualities of its predecessor, I still love that album. Both albums are slightly different beasts with different vibes radiating from both of them. What I didn't expect was just how drastic of a change in sound "We Will Always Love ... read more
The Peni--ahem! I mean BENIS Man is back baby and he's dropped a new EP! (I slept horribly, so apologies for the messy writing)
In terms of influences, Ryan shows plenty of love to experimental rap peers while also taking the limited recording equipment and bedroom headspace into mind. It all pretty much begins with the intro, which takes obvious inspiration from the usual clipping. album openers. To be honest, while it does set the tone of "Rollercoaster" pretty damn well, the high ... read more
Recorded throughout the pandemic and boasting a radio show concept, Daniel Lopatin has crafted what I believe to be one of his most refreshing, indulgent and oddly accessible albums in his catalog. "Magic Oneohtrix Point Never" is an album that I've always wanted "Age Of" to become while simultaneously being as strange, beautiful and engaging as his other works. While I wouldn't say it's essential OPN material just from these first couple of listens, "Replica" and ... read more
Now, I'm not as crazy for Nothing But Thieves as I was, like, 2 years ago but I still have a soft spot for them and I'm still a somewhat a defender for "Broken Machine" (though a 9.3 is WAY too high). Despite the clean, radio-ready production hindering it somewhat, it's still a great album in my opinion. The riffs and instrumentation are superb, Connor Mason's vocals are beautiful, the choruses are consistently fantastic and they weren't afraid to take a few risks with their sound. ... read more
The 2010's have definitely been a little rough for this animated band, to say the least. Gorillaz kicked off the decade with the magnificent "Plastic Beach" and an amazing Converse collaboration with "DoYaThing"... and then disappeared for a while. Things initially started to look up for the band with a big comeback and a new album, "Humanz". Unfortunately, that album and "The Now Now" were both very underwhelming and completely unimpactful albums that ... read more
Like many horror sequels, "Visions of Bodies Being Burned" doubles down on the scares, the body count and the bloodshed. Unlike most horror sequels, however, it also doubles down on what made its predecessor so damn fantastic and then some!
This album, just like "There Existed an Addiction to Blood", is made to be a fucking Halloween nightmare. It's very heavily reliant on its unnerving atmosphere, which is equal times ambient and, of course, noisy this time around. The ... read more
When Dorian said that they weren't going to release an album this year and then suddenly announce one, I was kinda skeptical at first because I thought this record would feel very rushed and thrown together without much in the way of quality. However, I found that there was nothing to worry about on "My Agenda". It's weirder, more abrasive, feature-PACKED, hypersexual and gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyer than "Flamboyant" without letting go of the witty writing, innovative ... read more
Wow. I'm genuinely impressed by how far Eli has come in terms of developing and building upon their sound since L.F.F. and their first LP of this moniker. I genuinely think their signature ambient sonics along with the brand new drum and bass aspects are a great fit. The influences definitely rear their heads on this album and they can prove a bit obvious at a few points in the tracklist but I still find it pretty forgivable due to how well they pull it off. The gnarly percussion, the spacey ... read more
Neil... you bastard! You fuckin' did it again!
Following up "Mouth Sounds", "Mouth Silence" (my personal favorite), and "Mouth Moods", "Mouth Dreams" is yet another mashterful piece of work in an already mashterful series of masup albums. Neil has pretty much upped the ante when it comes to editing skills and the production quality has improved alongside it. The album even carries a dreamy vibe that suits its concept. Right from the get-go, ... read more
This is where the "I'm not gonna review EVERYTHING" mindset comes into play. Phil Elverum has quite the expansive discography, so I skipped to where his musical output really mattered. The problem was that I didn't review "Don't Wake Me Up" because, while I found the record to be pretty solid, I just had very little to say. I don't have too much to say about this album either, but I'll just squeeze out a short-but-sweet review just to show that ... read more
Joji was always an artist that I saw plenty of potential to be a shining star in the current pop landscape and there are definitely a lot of people who still think that. It's just that there's always something that stands in his way, whether it be lackluster ideas, weak songwriting or both. "Nectar" can still have those quirks at certain points of its 18-track, 53-minute runtime, but this album is still an undeniably great improvement over his past ventures.
There have been ... read more
Listening to IDLES is the musical equivalent to walking down the street and getting jumped by a bunch of burly English men with handlebar mustaches (even on their dicks). They start kicking you on the ground for what feels like an eternity until the gang leader gives you a 20 dollar bill for the local ice cream parlor. After a final kick to the shins, they leave and you wonder what the fuck happened. You don’t really like the fact that they beat the ever living piss out of you just to ... read more
What a fucking Friday... holy shit! I know I'm gonna strain myself with writing reviews today but fuck it!
"Ohms" shows that Deftones, even after a rather disappointing album, can manage to pull through and keep the consistency of their discography a genuine high point!
This is a relatively darker album. Remember all the sexuality in Chino's lyrics? Yeah, all of that's thrown out the window and all that's left is pure aggression! I can't find a song on here that isn't face-punching ... read more
With the praise for "Koi No Yokan" being super high, it would only make sense for Deftones to take that ethereal sound even further on "Gore". But I don't think they really did that. In fact, the end result just seems kinda... there...
It's not without its highlights, though, even if some of those highlights are still flawed. I think there are a few legitimately amazing tracks on this record. "Doomed User", "Hearts / Wires" and "Prayers / ... read more
Deftones might just be one of the most consistent bands I've heard in a long time. They're one of those bands that keep giving (almost) every record they make their all and keep pushing the boundaries of their genre. "Koi No Yokan" is absolutely no exception.
They continue further with the more straightforward sound that was present on "Diamond Eyes" and double down on the etherealness that made their best records so damn awe-inspiring! The chugging, downtuned riffs, the ... read more
A couple years after "Saturday Night Wrist" released, Deftones were recording for their sixth album "Eros". All of a sudden, they had been struck with the tragic loss of their bassist Chi Cheng. He got involved in a serious car accident, resulting in a coma and a death just five years later. With their beloved friend gone, they scrapped the project. They clearly weren't coping with this very well, but they needed to proceed with making more music somehow. So they ... read more
"Saturday Night Wrist" gives me exactly what I wanted after feeling disappointed by the self-titled album's lack of bite. It pairs back the heaviness while doubling down on the shoegaze elements and Wall of Sound experimentation that became such high points on their previous couple of records. There's still the alt-metal staples of their sound, with the heavy, chugging riffs and the occasional screamed vocals and all that, but this thing is ethereal as fuck and it punches you in the ... read more
As a follow-up to their most successful and acclaimed album, "White Pony", Deftones' self-titled release feels kinda disappointing. That isn't to say that I didn't like it, though. It starts out very strongly, with "Hexagram", "Minerva" and "Needles and Pins" being such kick-ass alt-metal bangers. Chino's vocal delivery is even more brutal on this record than ever before! Sometimes his screams sound like they're practically ... read more
The reason why I even decided to binge Deftones so early was because I was hooked onto "White Pony" for a solid week!
This album pulls the band even further away from their nu-metal roots (mostly) while focusing more on twisting and turning the alt-metal sound into their own. This thing is hella experimental when it comes to toying with said sound. We're talking about blending elements of metal with shoegaze, dream pop, even trip hop on one track. The band manages to pull this off ... read more
