This is really one of the most interesting and entrancing listens I’ve had to an album in a while. This album is truly mind melting and jarring for almost the entirety of its runtime. It starts off extremely impressive with one of the best dystopian sounding tracks ever, takes a sudden and dark, hypnotic twist in the middle, and ends with a conclusion that not only wraps up the album perfectly, but also somehow makes death sound not too bad. Fire of the Mind and Going Up are some of my ... read more
after 2021’s ‘to see the next part of the dream’, parannoul released this b-side tape, and i can’t say i’m disappointed. almost every moment on here is amazing, filled with blissful moments reminiscent of the original album, and some songs manage to be even better than even some of the best on to see the next part of the dream, primarily escape and white ceiling (which is now my second favorite parannoul song), which go to show his potential for becoming more than ... read more
swans discog dive 5/15: children of god
this album marks possibly the biggest stylistic changes in the swans discography, period.
previous to this, swans were known for the hard hitting, alternative no-wave sound they pioneered in the early 80s. after that era with filth and cop, they evolved their music and created it to become more disturbing, dark, and atmospheric. this style was short lived though, as only two albums were released with this sound, both of which were released in the same ... read more
update: 86 -> 98
what. the. hell.
i literally just listened to portal of i not even an hour ago and upped its rating to a 100, and now i’m moving this up to basically a 100 as well?
i don’t think this album is better than the last, but they’re pretty similar in terms of overall enjoyment. definitely need at least one more listen before giving it a perfect score, but my god, there is absolutely 0 things wrong with this album.
so hyped for exul’s release in like 3 ... read more
update 98 -> 100
i’ve had this album at a 100 in the past, but for some reason i lowered my rating. maybe it was me trying to lower my amount of perfect scores? maybe it was me being influenced by others’ ratings? idk, but what i do know now is that this is a solid 10/10 album and likely won’t drop to below that.
it’s been almost a year since i first listened to this, and since then, i’ve had countless relistens and i’ve never once not enjoyed a single ... read more
the concept is executed roughly and there’s some weak points on the album (pretty much just blame game and the second half of runaway) but everything else is top tier hop hop
edit: it’s kinda funny how michael gira and his engineer sifted through hundreds of cassette tapes just to find just one common theme in order to put out just anything with at least some artistic merit. he basically rushed the record, decided to not even cut it down to the length of a regular swans album because he was so tired of trying to make this album good. he didn’t even bother to make an album cover! he just stuck the band name, album title, and a blue circle indicating it is ... read more
if all the top and recent reviews being 100’s didn’t encourage you to listen to this album, maybe this review will
in my opinion, this is the weakest album in the trilogy, but still holds up very well despite holding that title.
i mean, what would you expect from a post-2010 swans album that this album doesn’t offer? loud, long, drawn out epic tracks? check. short, quick dopamine rushes with shorter tracks? check. a two hour runtime? check. religious themes even?? well this ... read more
the second leg of this album feels so hollow, but it’s been a long time since i last listened so don’t take my word for it
the eminem interlude was the most enjoyable track on this album and i’m not even joking
straight down the middle 50/100 because it had a cool concept but 0 musical value
every song sort of follows the same formula and gets boring REALLY quickly, but when isolated from this album and listened to on its own, they’re pretty decent, generic indie rock cuts. i also find it pretty funny that ‘anything’ sounds exactly like good 4 u by olivia rodrigo, which just goes to show how generic this album is.
best songs: 7, postpone, oxygen, red
as a follow up, it’s not bad but it’s not good either. the vocals have really gotten worse on this record and the guitar work is a lot more laid back as compared to LP1, but there’s still good tracks that i feel outweigh the bad tracks.
this albums on the cusp of being called a “good” project (7+) but i feel like there’s a lot of filler and just flat out boring and annoying songs and verses. survivors guilt is the best song by quite a bit.
