Jack Stauber - Pop Food
80

It's really intriguing. It's not experimental, but it's certainly not regular pop. His music has a unique flair to it that I cannot really describe, and that is especially poignant on this album.
TOP 3 SONGS: Buttercup, I Understand, Oh Klahoma

Röyksopp - Junior
95

I think this is Royksopp's best album, it's their transition from more chillout music to more electrifying and vibrating synth pop (And some electrifying electronic tracks too!) and the collection of tracks here are just basically all bangers.
TOP 3 SONGS: The Girl And The Robot, Royksopp Forever, Vision One

Röyksopp - Profound Mysteries II
82

Of the Profound Mysteries trio, this is pretty handily my favourite. They're all really mysterious and haunting, but I and III go for more ambient adjacent music while this one goes for a more synth pop adjacent collection of tracks. At least, to me it does, all 3 have mixes of both.
TOP 3 SONGS: Oh, Lover, Lets Get It Right, Unity

Röyksopp - Lost Tapes
83

This Royksopp project has like, everything. It's a B-sides collection, which there are very many different types of B-sides here. There are bangers that sound totally unlike anything else royksopp put out, never on an album only because they don't fit the sound of anything on that album, and songs that are very clearly not as good as the actual stuff on their albums. It's a mixed bag but it has a lot of really unique really great stuff
TOP 3 SONGS: In The End, Andromeda, I Wanna Know

Nosaj Thing - Parallels
77

It's pretty solid. No tracks specifically stick out to me in a huge way but nothing here is disappointing either. I feel like it's missing a bit of his experimental flair his earlier works had for a more streamlined mainstream and easier to digest sound, but it still makes some good grooves.
TOP 3 SONGS: All Points Back To U, How We Do, Nowhere

Ratatat - Classics
74

It's really catchy, and really nice. Kind of music to listen to when you don't want to think about anything and just wanna vibe.
TOP 3 SONGS: Wildcat, Kennedy, Tropicana

Baths - Obsidian
79

This was like, a severely unexpected change after Baths' first album, going from cute ambient music to his emo era, but honestly it's a super refreshing change, this thing sounds absolutely sick.
TOP 3 SONGS: Earth Death, Phaedra, Miasma Sky

TOKiMONSTA - Desiderium
100

Everything on this thing is so masterfully produced and comes together absolutely perfectly for me. I'm usually pretty stingy on what songs I choose to save and this is the only album where I legitimately have every single song saved (There are a couple EPs though that I do).
TOP 3 SONGS: Drive, Open Air, Steal My Attention

Eartheater - Trinity
95

Absolutely hypnotizing and incredibly ethereal. This album is one that grows on you. Some are immediate hits, some need a bit more time to grow on you. Also, Solid Liquid Gas is probably my most played song of all time. She completely ramps up the intensity to a 100 on that track and it is a bloody wild experience.
TOP 3 SONGS: Solid Liquid Gas, Fontanel, Supersoaker

Rone - Tohu Bohu
84

Bye Bye Macadam is truly one of the greatest electronic songs of all time imo. The rest of the album is pretty good too, but not nearly as interesting as that song.
TOP 3 SONGS: Bye Bye Macadam, Tempelhof, Fugu Kiss

Hannah Diamond - Reflections
85

Bubblegum bass as a genre is mainly full of upbeat songs but this album takes that cliche and turns it on it's head with many quite melancholic tracks, It's still got that PC Music flair to it with several super intense moments as well though. Overall really fun listen
TOP 3 SONGS: Concrete Angel, Fade Away, Reflections

IAMX - Volatile Times
85

Handily my favourite IAMX album. It's long but it's worth it, so many really great tracks, from exciting rock adjacent anthems to emotional ballads and everything in between. Bernadette is especially interesting, while not my favourite, it is what I would call "sad clown" music, as in the literal clown in a circus clown.
TOP 3 SONGS: Volatile Times, Oh Beautiful Town, Bernadette

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
86

This is a perfect example of an absolutely fantastic ambient leaning record. The genre I feel has a lot of really boring stuff but this is definitely the cream of the crop here. Boards Of Canada is fascinatingly unsettling yet calming at the same time. It's got the same vibes as being in an old abandoned house. Nothing too freaky or in your face, but still quite unsettling.
TOP 3 SONGS: Gyroscope, The Devil Is In The Details, 1969

Son Lux - Lanterns
80

This album is kind of hit or miss for me, but it's mostly full of hits. The vocals can be quite offputting for people but honestly I really like them. The production is absolutely fantastic and unique, especially the faster songs are just incredibly exhilerating.
TOP 3 SONGS: Lost It To Trying, No Crimes, Pyre

iamamiwhoami - kin
80

It's a really great synth pop record. I think what especially makes this interesting is her wispy ethereal vocals, they're really unique and combined with the fun poppy production makes it especially satisfying.
TOP 3 SONGS: Drops, Sever, Rascal

Bonobo - fabric Presents: Bonobo
81

This is definitely an album that works better listening to it all at once rather than listening to each individual song. It's basically one song that's an hour and 15 minutes that has many different sections to it. But the beats on this thing go super hard, there are so many really amazing mixes.
TOP 3 SONGS: Mirapolis (Laurent Garnier Remix) [haha it's a remix of a remix! remix-ception!], Buzzard Walk, Focus

Katie Gately - Loom
91

This is handily one of the darkest albums I have ever listened to. It takes all of Katie's signature sounds and beats and puts them in both such a mournful but also deeply angsty in a malicious way. The beats are absolutely POUNDING through your soul. It's my least favourite record of hers so far between the 3 that are out but god damn it is still insanely good.
TOP 3 SONGS: Bracer, Tower, Allay

Grimes - Miss Anthropocene
81

A much darker turn from her last album, Art Angels, but very welcome. It's incredibly gorgeous and ethereal and holds a couple songs that I point to as the pinnacle of "ethereal pop" for anyone wanting to get into the genre.
TOP 3 SONGS: Violence, We Appreciate Power, So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth

Hot Chip - In Our Heads
80

Pretty standard synth pop, but honestly really nice! The lead vocalist especially has a really unique voice. Flutes is especially the best thing on this album, incredibly gorgeous and haunting.
TOP 3 SONGS: Flutes, Motion Sickness, Don't Deny Your Heart

Purity Ring - another eternity
84

This album has both better and worse songs than on their previous album Shrines. Overall it's still really great dark synth pop.
TOP 3 SONGS: sea castle, bodyache, begin again

"absolutely stellar review"
On Sega Bodega - Dennis
"Yeah exactly. In Sega's music, he tends to embrace a really feminine side of being a man through both the production and the lyrics, which is much more typical of LGBT artists since this music and the themes tends to habit a more gender fluid space associated with the LGBT (part of the reason why I like it cause I'm gay lol). Ultimately to me it doesn't really matter if he is straight or not, the music is incredible, it was just kind of surprising lmaooo"

"no problem and ofc yeah, she was one of the first queer people that I really looked up to and made me feel comfy in my own body as a queer person so it hit really hard but I take solace in the fact that I am not the only one she impacted in that way with her work"

"god when you talked about the day sophie died it brought me right back to that too cause that was also the very first thing I saw when I woke up. I remember back then it was the height of covid so I was sleeping in absurdly late so I woke up just to go to the washroom and checked my phone and that was the first thing I saw and I was so shocked to the core that I could not fall back to sleep whatsoever. Also glad you mentioned Um Um as that has become one of my fav songs of all time and is one of the only ones that is able to consistently make me tear up LOL. Also want to mention Lost Everything by A.G. Cook & EasyFun (and Remi Wolf on vocals) off of their latest album cause that was also dedicated to her, it's another one that really hits me to the core. Really loved this writeup thank you a ton, from one queer person to another <3"
