God's Plan is not a bad song. It's exactly what I expect from Drake: a basic pop-rap song that sort of meanders for three minutes without every really coming to fruition. Diplomatic Immunity is a messy song where Drake's flow is off beat, and everything is really underwhelming and boring.
You guys see the cool spacing between the letters of the title? God this band is fucking innovative.
This is the most middle of the road bandcamp rock album I have ever heard. Dope pigs on the cover though.
Biggest surprise in recent hip hop, and one of the most slept on rappers of last year. ABCs of New York, while it may sound childish in the beginning, evolves into one of the most impressive and charismatic songs on the album. The only other album I feel I could compare to 1992 Deluxe is (the featured) Wiki's No Mountains in Manhattan.
I was planning on completely avoiding this compilation altogether; I saw how awful movie soundtracks can be with Suicide Squad's horrendous output, and wanted to save myself the pain. However, the constant promotion of this on Apple Music caused me to check it out eventually, and although it isn't the indecisive stadium-rock/hip hop disaster that Suicide Squad was, it has the same flaws.
Since the obvious comparison to this album is the Suicide Squad soundtrack, I'll start with the success ... read more
I'll give him a chance, but this isn't super promising. First listen I liked this song, and still really dig the progression that builds up to the latter half of the track. But there is potential in Timberlake to do so much more with his talent and this is a waste that can be put out by anyone.
Since I haven't been legitimately active on this site for many months now, I figured I'd at least post a best of 2017 list on here. Sure there are other ways I can post it, but I'm going to put it in the space for a review. My ratings of each album/song are irrelevant to the list as this is how I feel about them now that the year is over.
Albums of the Year
1. Brockhampton - Saturation Trilogy (felt fair to group them together, but if I had to pick one it would be the first album)
2. Lorde - ... read more
EDIT: Bones from 2013-2016 had one of the best mixtape streaks of all time. This is an underground classic that I'm confident I'll still be listening to well into my adult years. The dark, edgy, emo rap that Bones created has influenced nearly all of the rappers you hear on SoundCloud today.
Best underground rap album of the decade.
Although I was a fan of her before she began her long-term relationship with the PC Music crowd, the direction that Charli XCX has taken since last year's Vroom Vroom EP has worked wonders for the quality of her music. Working with Sophie and A.G. Cook, among the many other producers, complemented her rebellious yet sweet attitude, and showed serious progression in her sound. Charli's Number 1 Angel tape from March presented a more hip hop oriented sound, bringing a small army of features to ... read more
Even these guys' outtakes kick ass. A lot of these either failed to materialize into full songs or were just deemed unfit for a proper release, but there is still a crazy range in sound across this 90+ minute project. The extended version of Lamb is possibly one of my favorite things to come from the group.
Judging by my previous, inflated ratings of Hannah Diamond's singles from the past few years, I think its safe to say that I'm a pretty big fan of her work, regardless of how childish or sugary it is. She epitomizes the PC Music label in her high pitched voice and bubbly, poppy production behind it. Nothing she's done has been too serious, which I like, and that's yielded some impressive songs to her discography. However, it seems like Hannah Diamond's luck has run out with this new EP, ... read more
The lyrics really let me down but this beat is absolutely insane. Reminds me of something from Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition mixed with a PC Music beat.
Please do not act as if this rearranged tracklist makes the album better or worse. Might it change your perspective on the music? Sure, but the quality of it remains the same.
Age of Adz meets Carrie and Lowell; Sufjan crafts a song that gradually builds up in a grand, electronic manner, but retains a depressing and somber mood throughout.
Sounds like Anohni with retro-sounding production. Never listened to Tune-Yards before, but this sound they have is peaking my interest.
Through the meandering production and average singing, I'm thoroughly unimpressed with James Blake's debut. There's definitely some potential here, but there's nothing that sets Blake apart from the hordes of electronic singers that do the same thing as he does.
His most consistent release, Spook delivers throughout this project. Without You is for sure his best song, and one of the best in R&B this decade for me.
I sat down and listened to this album with no expectations. The only song I had heard before was Batman, a song that surprised me for not being completely unbearable, but also proved to me that Jaden didn't have much of his own vision. Syre proves both of those points; sure there are some really great songs, clever lyrics, and fantastic production, but there is still a lot to be improved upon. Jaden meanders his way through the latter half of this album, saying very little of substance and ... read more
