Iglooghost - Neō Wax Bloom
74

Chinese Nu Year, upon release, really took me by surprise and introduced me to a whole new realm of electronic music. Since then I've followed Iglooghost pretty closely, listening to any new song he puts out or update he made on this album, which has been talked about almost immediately after Nu Year in 2015.
The brief runtime of that EP might have been its saving grace, because with over 40 minutes of the same bumbly wonky that Iglooghost does best, it does feel a bit bloated. His ... read more

Art Garfunkel - Angel Clare
55

I have seen this at nearly every single record store I have been to. It's price has never been more than $2. I see why.

Macklemore - GEMINI
31

Before I get into the music, let me just say how confused I am as to why Macklemore chose to not work with Ryan Lewis. On the first LP these guys did together (which I still think is very solid and will stand by that statement), they were catapulted into the mainstream and found so much success, all while keeping a really positive image. Sure, Ryan Lewis might have been a workhorse, but he made some pretty great beats and brought out the best in Macklemore as well. Unfortunately, the same ... read more

Brain - I'm Brain
10

You need a certain level of intelligence to be able to vibe to Brain.

You probably just don’t understand it because he doesn’t rap about his hoes, clothes, money, and cars. Everyone is hating on him, but okay go ahead and listen to your lil whatevers.

You need to at least be an ivy league graduate to fully understand the quantum mechanics that he is rapping. It’ll just go over your head otherwise.

There’s a reason Macklemore passed him the crown.

Mogwai - Young Team
85

whats up guys

Young Thug & Carnage - Young Martha
75

Short and sweet, the collaboration between Thug and Carnage is one that works exactly how a hip hop collab should be. Young Thug doesn't bring his best bars, but his personality is as present as ever, and Carnage's beats are subtle while energetic. Liger is a standout and destroys the majority of the songs from EBBTG.

BONES - Teenager
70

Rap is among Bones' top 5 songs and easily has the most angst and character than any of his other songs in the pre-Scumbag era of his music.

Björk - The Gate
77

Powerful but not close to what was on Vulnicura.

Khalid - American Teen
48

Sure he can sing, but for the most part Khalid's debut LP is an overproduced snoozefest of poorly written songs and too much of an emphasis on poppy hooks. You're going to be hearing "Have you heard of Khalid?" from every 14 year old with a twitter account for the next year or so.

fav track: Young Dumb & Broke

Corbin - Mourn
77

Although Shlomo is the driving factor behind the success of this album, Corbin still brings his strengths to the table and puts out a solid, moody r&b album. His deep and whiney singing fits the dark aesthetic that he went for very well even when he switches to higher inflections in his voice. Lyrically, Mourn is not too impressive, and with lines like "how deep can you cut" it comes off as trying too hard to be edgy. Antwon's contribution, while brief, is a standout moment of ... read more

Lorde - Homemade Dynamite (Remix)
56

Too cluttered and busy. The original track was the weakest off of Melodrama, but this is even worse.

Chris Travis - Crunch Time
85

One of the hardest songs of this decade

Matt Elliott - Drinking Songs
89

Minimal yet grandiose, Drinking Songs is a depressing trip into the mind of Matt Elliott. With ethereal string instrumentation dominating the majority of the album, but an explosive electronic closer, Elliott varies his sound and puts a modern twist on an older style of folk. His singing, while sparse across the project, is solid and fits the dreamy but hopeless theme that these songs carry.
To be honest, a lot of this album revolves around the mindset that you have going into it. While ... read more

Logic - 1-800-273-8255
63

Sure, this is about as basic as pop rap gets. Two featured singers and only one real verse, with a pretty lackluster beat. But I really like the message logic is sending out with this, as corny as he has been in the past. Still far from a fan of him as an artist, but this is a really catchy, touching song.

Yung Lean - Frost God
59

Hennessy & Sailor Moon has grown on me immensely and is probably one of Yung Lean's best songs. A decent amount of this tape bangs.

BROCKHAMPTON - SATURATION II
84

Ever since Brockhampton released those four fantastic singles in May, they have been on the radar of pretty much everyone that listens to rap music. Saturation was by far my most-listened to album of the summer; with everything from the beats to lyrics deeply resonating with me and never boring me even after 50 listens. And the fact that a handful of guys put it all together in only a month? Yeah, Brockhampton is something special.
So, I decided to take my time with Saturation II after it ... read more

Yung Sherman - Innocence
70

With surprisingly layered and complex songs, Yung Sherman shows that he isn't only Yung Lean's producer on his first solo release. With progressing synths and pummeling peaks in vein of the PC Music crowd, Yung Sherman's first real non-hip hop tracks are extremely promising. His sound has range, and each track actually feels like a fully thought out idea rather than a single loop for 8 minutes, or even worse, a barely finished 1.5 minute track. There is still plenty of room for Sherman to ... read more

Death from Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
82

With plenty of grooves and funky riffs, Death From Above (1979)'s first album is without a doubt one of the most fun and re-listenable set of punk tracks from the 2000's. Where an enormous amount of pop punk from the late 90's and early 2000's was unbearable, DFA does something a bit different, by keeping their sound aggressive and rough around the edges, but having catchy hooks to appeal to fans from all different genres. They never stop their onslaught of a confusingly poppy-yet-noisy ... read more

jonatan leandoer96 - Psychopath Ballads
51

Aside from Primal Fear, this is a surprisingly decent change in musical direction for Leandoer, better known as Yung Lean. He doesn't do anything particularly well, but most of it isn't as awful as it seems. The project is full of attempts at lo-fi rock and pop, with a hint of hip hop thrown in there, but it is obvious that Lean wants to separate this endeavor from his body of work under the Yung Lean moniker.
