theres just something really enjoyable about this album that itcotck didn’t have; this just feels so refreshing and exciting to hear.
the influence this had on alt rock is insane; we wouldn’t have the same sonic youth, nirvana, and so many other bands without dinosaur jr
its pretty good but sometimes some of the songs just kinda go all over the place (misanthrope as an example). i also kinda wish some of the songs were shorter and that it was less repetitive. symbolic is a great song that shows what this band can do and if this entire was album held up to the standards that song held, this album would be a 100. aside from that this is a pretty good collection of death metal tracks.
abrasive as hell. i especially love the noisier parts and the first couple of tracks. farewell is definitely a standout worth mentioning for its shoegaze sound opposed to this albums noise rock/stoner rock/metal sounds. unfortunately it does get kind of repetitive, and track 8 just kinda drags on for too long when it doesn’t really do much from me go begin with. sometimes the vocals sound a bit awkward, but i think that the raw feeling and abrasive/noisy sound makes up for that (and to be ... read more
1:50 of the last track might be the most beautiful thing i’ve ever heard
after listening to daydream nation, i was really intrigued by sonic youth's ability to just have a song go from alt rock to some of the noisiest, dirtiest, most chaotic sections a song can have. so i decided to listen to sister, daydream nations predecessor. starting off with schizophrenia (what i consider to be an example of a perfect song), sonic youth does just as i expected them to do. a nice alt rock song that eventually just steers off into their earlier no wave sound. eventually, as the ... read more
a lot more cheerful than i expected, but i actually liked it quite a bit. sweet, pretty, heartwarming, etc. definitely a nice change of pace from what i normally listen to.
edit: wow this is actually really good, i did not expect to like this as much as i do. theres just something about this that throws me off so badly, it just feels weird that i find myself actually really liking something this poppy and “sunshiny.” i cannot express the joy i feel listening to songs like track 4, ... read more
somehow more depressing than stratosphere
also operations and diamond are some of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard you guys are sleeping on those songs so hard holy shit
also i wonder if duster has any sort of connection to bowery electric (their music sounds similar, this album cover is almost the same as the album “beat,” and they both have a song called inside out)
an improvement from nevermind, with a more diverse sound, but also having a few weaker moments. for example, rape me isn't bad at all, but it literally just sounds like they ran out of ideas and decided to make a worse smells like teen spirit. i can't figure out why that song is so highly rated. but as inconsistent as the track listing may be, this album contains some very raw, energy filled songs like serve the servants and scentless apprentice, as well as its rather melancholic moments such ... read more
it starts off pretty well, but it just kind of falls off at the end. i just don't really like the atmosphere all that much, and it just comes off as edgy at some points. theres also just something about the production that i just don't like at all. most of the songs and ideas on the album are actually pretty good though.
i cant be the only one who thinks the second half kinda sounds like pinkerton era weezer
also this is my 100th rating so thats cool
theres so much to love about this album, but theres equally just as much to hate. most of the tracks are pretty good, but sometimes the vocals, samples, and just flat out weird noises make some parts unlistenable. like seriously, if you think the vocals are bad on their next album, you just wouldn't be able to get through this album. i'm also really torn on track 5, because i really like everything about that song other than that stupid chorus. and i don't understand at all why track 4 and 5 ... read more
