Off the top of my head, I think smth like this would've been better:
Getting Older
Billie Bossa Nova
Male Fantasy
GOLDWING
Lost Cause
Everybody Dies
my future
Not My Responsibility
Your Power
NDA
Happier Than Ever
I don't like to think of Avenade as some kind of AOTY God. Even tho he was the first one that "shook up the indie music scene"...... yea.
On AOTY.
And I mean this with respect to Avenade. No ranting from me. Matt is a talented musician. He deserves the popularity he has. He deserves his spot on No Agreements. I don't think he deserves or deserved the cult-like fandom surrounding him tho. And I mean this w the best intentions, bc idk what it is now ever since I exiled myself from it. ... read more
This is the EP that introduces the cutout character of Scarlett. She is introduced as an antagonistic character, and will later show up in IAWA. I slightly remember the time when "Inside Voices" was pitted against "Infamous", and the former mostly won. But I think I prefer "Infamous" now.
Honestly, I thought this would hold up and it sorta does. Maybe it was the nostalgia I had for this EP because I was 16 at the time and I thought Avenade was the coolest AOTY ... read more
You know what. Fuck it. Avenade discography time, and this time we're going back to the beginning. And I got a new cable for an old set of headphones, so fuck this. Let's go.
History time. I used to be a friend of Matt Hawkins, the guy behind Avenade. I was friends w him before he even conceived of Avenade, although I never was there at the inception. Turns out I actually listened to this a while before it was even RELEASED, and I just didn't pay attention! This also wasn't the release that ... read more
This is one of the most impressive production outputs from AOTY's most underrated producer thus far.
And upon completing it, it really seems like his best work (the first of his I heard bc I'm not going to sit through 50 minute albums I never looked forward too)
And songs like "Safehouse", "DOA", "You", "hvít rými ätök", and "Into Dust" exemplify the talent Blizzard has.
The only problem is there's so much excess in ... read more
It's not that the songs are bad (most aren't), and that Concrete is a terrible producer (he isn't).
It's that this album had wasted potential, and was a disappointing listen compared to what I had heard about it.
Now, I was a noisician. Concrete asked me to listen bc of my experience with noise. I expected this to be indifferent bc of sound. Even as a noisician, I feel like the execution sucks. The harshness of noise textures against electronic music that I could describe as carnival in ... read more
I'm telling you "Bed for the Scraping" is awesome.
And I FINALLY got into Fugazi. Had no idea Ian from Minor Threat was in this band!
"Long Distance Runner" is such a good closer tho.
This really was a pleasant and different experience than their last two albums. I liked it lol.
Tho I will admit "nothing is" is the weakest and it doesn't go hard ENOUGH.
Comfort in Passing is the worst song on here by two miles.
But with that out of the way, I really did not expect this to be good. And for what it is, it's solid WOHO. I think w the addition of Willard alongside Addie, it changes the identity of what once was a solo project into a duo (he's been contributing for quite a bit actually before he was made into a member).
This feels like a happier record, despite the lyrics still being p sad at glance (and I'm not going to look into it more). I ... read more
I really wanted to rate this a 70. I really did. The vocals are way better than the rough early version, but they still kinda suck?? (altho they could change). Funny enough, the song really felt like it was dragging.
Props to the lyrics tho, these are some straightforward angry bits.
I finally listened to this because I love SOPHIE. Discovered her before she came out, and before she even had a face.
Lol, Grimes fucked up on that one.
But still. I almost cried to this album. "It's Okay to Cry" almost made me. I don't think "Immaterial" is the best song off her, tho the percussion slaps. "Faceshopping" is awesome, and so is "Ponyboy". After listening to the Flume and Eprom remix of "Is It Cold In The Water?" for so long, the ... read more
I really thought this was "Leaves TURNS Inside You."
This feels like the calm after the terrible storm. And if I had to choose something that would symbolize the end, this would be the score for that end.
My God, the drone of the beginning of that song, and the way the band mixed this fuxkin song. The ringing resonance of the ride cymbal.
One thing you'll notice if you listen closely is this record is warmer. There's not a lot of definite high end that you can find on polished ... read more
I finally listened to Unwound after listening to the noise about them off and on.
I love this record lol. Fantastically solid record, with awesome noise rock to boot. Can't wait to bump "All Souls Day" again and again.
This is the most boring stuff I've heard from Oliver and co since... ever
Except for the last track
It both surprises me and gives me a slight laugh how much AOTY doesn't know what progressive pop is for it to be bolded in tags (tho I think I can understand why).
This really is one of the best debuts from an indie rock band ever. This has all the energy of punk, but with the ethos of smth like sophomore/junior BSS except much more lite and indie. Can't say fruity cause that is def gonna be taken wrong, and is not that accurate.
I expected this to be... around a 70 or a three and a half star ... read more
