ok tbh this isnt that bad. This captures the struggle of getting into the rap game pretty well, some of his best story telling.
The late registration style production was a neat surprise, and Rich Brian’s delivery doesn’t come across as monotone as usual. Also, looking at this album tracklist, the RZA feature hints to a old school meets new school approach kind of like Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid Maad City, except from these two tracks I am not forseeing something as well written. Also, the contrast between this and Yellow kind of leans to a lack of focus albeit an interesting project. Nonetheless, what ... read more
For a compilation with so many artists this either proves how willing to adapt Dreamville artists are or how much they all follow the footsteps of J Cole, their ring leader. This actually works in favor of the compilation because it creates a pretty fluid compilation. The wonkier more abstract trap style they employ on most of these songs is admirable, and there are some pretty good verses and moments on here like the infectious Wells Fargo chorus and JID’s verse and chorus on Down Bad. ... read more
Jaden gets ever so slowly closer and closer to finding his own niche and style as he continues to borrow his aray of tasteful influence. Jaden has released one project a year for the past three, and has shown a gradual incline in ambition and some penmanship. I feel like Jaden, considering how ambitious and in good taste he is, should take a step back and work on his music for a couple more years in some sort of a hiyatus. What I respect so much about him is that despite being deemed corny and ... read more
Nice surprise. Good to see Kenny continue to step out of his comfort zone and Dominic Fike continue to find more assets to boost his career. Dominic’s flows on this thing were pretty good.
Act 1 by Jay Electronic is pure magic. Its like watching a Disney Pixar film squeezed into 15 minute. Jay spits incredible
verses, featuring some clever juxtapositions and skits in between. Jay’s flow, rhyme schemes, and thematics are often well thoughout and awe inspiring. The “beats” on this thing, even being entirely drumless, are gorgeous and well formed featuring layers of orchestral instruments. Act 1 isn’t a typical hip hop EP, its a small hip-hop theatrical that, ... read more
This is easily the most ambitious content he has made to date. Period. The song structure and writing isn't anything to write home about, but the melodic progression, the extremely surprising and impressive Rich Brian Vocals, and the extremely chilling orchestral outro really took me by surprise. What Joji did on Sanctuary and SDITD was an expansion of sound, but Rich Brian really came for a full 180 and gave us a track that was completely different from what he has given us before. I have ... read more
A Crow Looked At Me is EXTREMELY heavy on the heart. The way Elverum portrays the moments before his wife’s death on tracks like Raven, and the damage it has had on him was very well portrayed. The album holds some of the best song writting I’ve heard this decade, its so poetic yet very down to Earth and blunt. The lyrics truly sound like a part of Elverum has been taken away and he’s beyond angry, sad, and empty at the same time. Elverum doesn’t express his agony ... read more
Post is a very colorful variety of a “pop” record. There are abrassive electronic moments like Enjoy and Army of Me, jazzy, passionately electric moments like its oh so quiet, modern things, isobel, and I miss you... Slow and drawn out ballads like Headphones and Cover Me, and a constant futuristic electronic buzz to it that rides tor most of the record, tracks like Hyper-Ballad remind me of walking into a busy, colorful arcade in a way, yet the songs feels some what dramatic like ... read more
Down Bad had a kind of wonkey trap beat. I actually liked Cole’s verse the most, it had a funny vibe to it and the most creative wordplay and bragadocio. Every other performance was just whatever, though I thought JID’s vocal style catered to the beat well hence the hook, and Young Nudy was a different flavor.
The other song was a drag, so slow without any purpose. Basic trap rnb.
