Denzel Curry - SPEEDBOAT
NR

Forgettable. Definitely got lost in the sauce on this one, Zel.

DJ Khaled - Father Of Asahd
NR

It is incredibally confusing, as Khaled’s biggest advocate, to rationalize this being Dj Khaled’s album when he has producer tags other than his own... and vocals other than his own... and everything other than his own besides his occasional, albeit enjoyable, holaring. Watching a video in which he explains his music making process, his claim to this music becomes even more confusing. I’ll bite, sure, he compiled all of these radio-friendly tracks into sort of a playlist - it ... read more

Sometimes I go into the best albums list, see the albums that get such raving scores, but then check their page to see who reviewed them and kind of let my guard back up.

EDIT 5/29/2019: Doorman is one of the best songs this year.

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
70

With Igor, Tyler did something so far from what he's done before yet has come back around from Flowerboy to a lot of old odd-future-era aesthetics. I, personally, am not the biggest fan of this lense he put on his first three albums, and matched with a lot of unnecessary provokativeness, it just wasn't for me. Flowerboy was a great turn around for him, shifting from his worst album "CHERRY BOMB" into a much more meaningful and actually sensitive rap image. The production felt ... read more

GTFU was the exact energy I needed

Love the beats on this thing, abstract yet welcome-ly abrassive. The verses are sharp, featuring mostly bragadocio with some conciousness here and there that doesn't feel too forced.

edit 5/29/2019: score went from 88 to 83

edit 6/12/2019: score changed from 84 to a 74

EDIT 9/6/2019: The less I come back to this album makes me start to reconsider what I really like about music more. It was a pretty fresh first few listens, dropping 808 heavy, gritty ... read more

Kota the Friend - Anything
NR

Kota is like a healthy blend of Chance the Rapper, Isaiah Rasahd, and Amine. His music is kind of niche and he sometimes has a somewhat lackluster prose, but his appeal is pretty strong and its nice to see someone more artistic growing in popularity.

Gorillaz - Stylo
NR

My favorite Gorillaz song. its so off the wall yet super sleak and vibey. Nostalgia is huge on this one, but you can;t deny the brilliant mix on this join. Perfect song for road-trips.

DaBaby - Suge
NR

Soon enough trap producers will stop using 808s and will start using dubstep growls like sicko mode lmfao

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
NR

An Instagram page I follow claimed this was the greatest album of all time. He had compiled a list of his 100 favorite albums of all time, ranked, and I would say I recognized about 40% of them. I figured that this could be because of two things - One, his music taste is in an entire different lane than mine, or two, I just hadn't discovered it yet. After listening to this record, I can finally tell you that I've found my favorite album of all time... It's still MBDTF... But, this record ... read more

Young Nudy & Pi'erre Bourne - Sli'merre

Some good melodies but where was the bass?

Holly Herndon - PROTO
NR

What the fuck is wrong with her.

EDIT 5/13/2019: Yeah, what I really appreciate about this record is how its almost like something I conceptualized in my head. It reminds me of that bizarre video on the internet with that mannequin-like robot singing "I feel fantastic."

EDIT 6/18/2019: Yeah its a cool concept but its more style and conceptualization over substance and experimentation

A$AP Ferg - Pups
NR

great beat, somewhat lackluster flows and hooks as of now

The Comet Is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery
87

There is a strong argument in favor of the Saxophone being the greatest instrument ever created.

Favorite Tracks: Because the End is Really the Beginning, Blood of the Past, Super Zodiac, Astral Flying, Timewave Zero, Unity, The Universe Wakes Up

Tim Hecker - Anoyo
72

minecraf

6/23/2019: score changed from 80 to 72

Denzel Curry - RICKY
NR

I like this more than a lot of TA13OO. Its got a lot of bite to it and somewhat abstract trap style.

wifisfuneral - Ethernet
NR

IMVU has such a cool vibe to it

Lil B - Options

On exception's review of Kid Cudi - Erase Me
"One of the major reasons I basically quit interpreting music. Would much rather make it and connect to music lovers that way. Furthermore, my opinions are changing at a million miles an hour. I can't keep up with myself. Maybe someday when I am 40 something and I emotionally matured I can give my full and complete opinion on all the music I've heard, but for right now I just got to live in the moment. "

"ikr that 808 was too nice for 2014 and literally every bar was a quotable"
On Lil Ugly Mane - MISTA THUG ISOLATION
"A lot of the same stuff still applies, but this review is clearly ignorant and unexperienced. This album isn’t necessarily ahead of its time because there really a future for this style and, well, the clearly drawn connections to older memphis rap acts made this sort of just appropriate for its time, but kind of in its own lane. It doesn’t necessarily have much influence on the following years of hip-hop, but I can hear it in some right in some newer acts."
On exception's review of XXXTENTACION - ? (Deluxe)
"Yeah I mean if it wasn’t obvious enough they added a bunch of already released shit, instrumentals that noone wanted, and to top it all off 8 voice memos that count as more stream revenue. Its 53 tracks, and no matter how long the songs are or how official they are, each one counts as more change in X’s manager’s pockets."

"Both you and Pitchfork think this is a percent above TPAB lol"

"Carti is an absolute beast this year though. Ever single feature he took part in was the best song on their respective album, even if the project was mediocre or just bad."
On exception's review of BROCKHAMPTON - BOY BYE
"I just realised matt does that and it kind of bothers me, like now im just waiting for him to change his flow his entire verses."

"Godspeed, Exception. Take your time."
On exception's review of Logic - Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
"Logic has gone too far. Nothing said will break through to him, he has completely lost himself to bat shit insanity and overwhelming positivity in the most negative way you could imagine. I don't think he can be saved, but God I hope he can be. He needs help."
On exception's review of Tyler, The Creator - Flower Boy
"You should write some more longer reviews on Soul Feeder"
On exception's review of Matt OX - Overwhelming
"I've been lowkey thinking the same. When I first heard Matt Ox's music I figured it was strictly for the meme culture, but this song in particular with the super bassy mix and earwormy synthesizer matched with Matt Ox's flow has actually made its way onto my playlist. Texture is everything."
On MarkCooper's review of Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs
"One of the best reviews I've read recently"
On exception's review of Megan Thee Stallion - Fever
"yeah like their reviews and articles used to have so much more personality and now they just feel so automated and dull. The last greatest thing Pitchfork was the Die Lit review."

On exception's review of Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
"I mean, I'll admit, I do that with Kanye - I click with his music even if the common opinion is mediocrity. Everyone has an artist like that. I feel like if you are considered a stan, by definition, you husually everything they do and who the artist is. The whole song was about a fan who collected Eminem's music for years and was amazed by everything he did to bleaching his own hair, hanging up posters, etc. Did Eminem really make nothing but masterpieces? not to many, but to Stan, he did."
