Swans - What Is This?
75

KEEP IN MIND EVERYONE: This is a DEMO album. This is stuff made for the new album, which will probably come out next year. And, since I got the CD in the mail, instead of just saying 'they are a pretty good collection of demos!', i'm gonna talk a little about my expectations for this new album.

If this is anything to go by, then we might be getting an album with the type of structures from the early records, but with the production and energy of the new releases. These demos are mainly vocally ... read more

Song lengths be fucked.

This is really good. It's got a heaviness and pursuit of interesting and fun songwriting that really is starting to click with me. While some of the tracks can sometimes feel long winded (I mean it's pretty hard for a 48 minute song NOT to feel long winded), it's still an enjoyable album that by far has more purpose and entertainment value then their previous records. It's got a more bigger emphases on heaviness and creating memorable and interesting soundscape, with ... read more

My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys

I swear to god I thought I reviewed this. Oh well.

OK, I can completely agree with everyone saying that this album is in no way as good as The Black Parade. It's not even close. Is this album cheesy? Yes, most definitely, almost defiantly cheese balls. Is it kinda dated in places? Sure, the more electronic elements of this album haven't particularly aged like fine wine. But is this album fun? Yes. Yes yes yes.
This album is absolutly overflowing with positive energy. It's a summer album first ... read more

before listening: haha girl with a basket of fruit! haha penis! haha i'm happy!

after listening: don't worry, mom don't worry, mom don't worry, mom don't worry, mom

Holy shit this album is dark lyrically. Do not listen to this album if your having a depressive episode kids, because if you do, this album will fuck you up. It's a painfully emotional record filled with some of the most heartbreaking and saddest tracks I've heard in a while. It's a pitch black record, but in that darkness is ... read more

ROCK BANDS SPLITTING YOUR BIG LONG SONGS INTO MULTIPLE PARTS: When uploading to streaming services, make sure you include an option to listen to the song as a whole song rather then just splitting it in the separate parts. I adore the first couple tracks off this album, but I would like to be able to listen to the whole of the Mind Fuzz trilogy without having to go through a satanic ritual in my shuffle-playlist mode. Thanks, rant over, onto the review.

Mindfuzz is correct. This is a trippy, ... read more

Swans - White Light from the Mouth of Infinity

My favorite country album.

Dark, dingy, aggressive, in your face, yet light, wholesome, beautiful and tender. This is a album that really pushes its dark, Gothic atmosphere, creating a polluted and almost overbearing soundscape that is both comforting and threatening. It's an album that's both an aggressive push and a helping hand. It's got both the intense lyricism of some of Swans best records, while also having a unique instrumental undertone that really pushes this album from alright to ... read more

Orville Peck - Pony
79

Now this? This is yeehaw music.

The almost classic styled cowboy tinged musical stylings of Dead of Night intrigued and delighted me when I first heard it, and I've always kept my ear out for when Orville Peck decided to release his full album. And, when it did decide to drop...yeah I can see this topping a LOT of end of year lists. It's in the same vain as Julia Jacklin or Hozier, but instead of telling their tales of woe and misfit-ness through indie ambiance or bluesy crooning, Orville ... read more

La Dispute - Panorama

@zachthesnack , this ones for you buddy.

So I had no idea what to expect on this one. Having heard Wildlife and absolutely loving it's hyper-emotional core to the lyrics, I was interested in where La Dispute's big, if not slightly dated, post-hardcore sound, would take the band. And i'm not gonna lie, while this sounds really nice, there isn't a lot here i'm going to be coming back to personally. And that's most likely more of a 'me problem' then the albums fault. The album almost takes a back ... read more

This makes my body bop and my brain tingly. Hyped for whatever these boys are cooking up.

Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
79

Oh thank god this was great. I don't know what I would have done if I had to sit through another hour long wank fest.

I was dreading listening to this. Actually dreading it. The last couple of Dream Theater albums felt so bloated and grossly stuffed with 'impressive nothingness' that I almost never wanted to hear another Dream Theater track again. But, everyone kept saying how amazing this album in particular was, and curiosity got to the better of me and...yeah this thing is pretty fucking ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Oddments

Eh. Probably the most straight forward and kinda plain King Gizzard record to date. Some songs are great, others are kinda forgetable, but nothing truely awful. It's got the noisy bangers of old and well as a bigger emphasis on slow jams that make the album flow like butter. It's a collection of well produced tracks from an exciting voice in Australian rock. And that's basically it. Not a lot to talk about sadly. It exists.

Swans - The Burning World

My new favorite game: Play this right before listening to Filth and weep.

I walked into this album with the lowest expectations possible. A Swans album both the fan base says is trash and ALSO Michael Gira, the mad lad himself, says (and I quote) 'I abhor that record.'. To say that I was going in with a negative mindset was a goddamn understatement. I was ready to destroy this thing. But...you really can't get mad at this album. Hell, I can't even call it a failure. It's actually...kinda ... read more

WARNING: I go full snobby critic in this review.
I absolutely love this album. It's passionate, powerful and earthshakingly fragile vocals backed up with the strange ambient jazz electronic bliss, it's an album that provides chaos in a way that doesn't overload your senses, but changes your perspective on one aspect of music. And in a lot of ways, it's much prettier and dainty of a record because it this. You feel each emotional core of each track, even with the insane intrumentation being ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Float Along – Fill Your Lungs
88

Pretty good. This album sounds a lot more 'hippie' and complex then the other recrods I've heard, almost having a jam band type quality to the sounds of this record, with some of the intrumentation being pulled right from a middle eastern setting, or perhaps a Woodstock level stoner festival. However, despite the changes in direction, it still maintains this level of energy and intensity that King Gizzard has always maintained in their music. It's not neutering or lessoning the King Gizz ... read more

CHAI - PUNK

To quote @simonemarz , 'girl i don't know what the fuck they're saying but i am living'.
I had the biggest goofball smile on my face listening to this album. This album is fun on toast. I honestly don't see what all the hate is about. From the bright vocals to the loud, distorted filled instrumentation, to the excellent rhythm section, this album is a dose of energy and sugar filled fun that has been sorely missed in pop punk for the last couple of years. It's a big, positive hug with some kick ... read more

Matmos - Plastic Anniversary

Texture heads, may I present you to this finest treat of 2019.
Ah yes, I have it when electronics become squeaky fluids. I've always had a passing interest in Matmos and their music, ever since I've heard about Ultimate Care II sometime in 2016, and have been a casual looker on of their work without ever giving their records the time they most likely deserve, and with this being the first project by them I've heard by them, by god am I excited to look further into their discography. The quirky, ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Eyes Like The Sky
71

It's alright. I probably wont come back to this as much as other King Gizzard records, but the very concept of a King Gizzard western audiobook/audio film is original enough to warrant a 30 minute record. especially with the same passion that King Giz usually brings. The songs here are interesting, the story is engaging and the overall creation of this album is pretty well made. However, it doesn't really lend itself to many single track standouts. It's a good record in it's entirity, but each ... read more

Stella Donnelly - Beware of the Dogs

tldr; this album is really nice, very well writen, and overall isn't a bad album. But...Look.

I'm glad that female artists are able to write and create honest music that they 100% believe in and want to make. In an era where everything is being over-read, over-analysed, over shared and over reviewed, with people being overtly nihilist and dismissive because of the new connection to information we currently have, it's very nice to see honesty, fearlessness and positive vibes in an age that ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - 12 Bar Bruise

OooOOoOoOOoOoooO, me likey VERY much.
Big, catchy, noisy, in your face and filled with a punk energy that absolutely drives this album into a wall, then recording the explosion on a phone (quite literally at times) and showing it to the world, it's a fun ass punk rock record. It's fun as hell, distorted to hell, and for what is basically a basement record, it's produced pretty well. It jumps from style to style, from Twist and Shout-esq bangers to a western styled interlude to a harmonica solo. ... read more

Street Sects - End Position

Me oh my I do like that distortion.

This album slaps. It's got a punk energy, with industrial production and a snarling, biting and convulsing front man that gives his all on the delivery of this record. It's loud, in your face, abrasive, punch in your face music that is both catchy and destructive. It's not the most original record out there (this brand of industrial metal has been done before) but what makes up for it is the pure passion and intensity it brings to the table. It's the same ... read more

"@SamHatedSBTH Joy as an Act of Resistance is an absolute essential record, so that's probably where i'd direct a newcomer. If they like that album then its down to what they really liked from it: - If they want something more raw, go with Brutalism - If they want something more catchy, go Ultra Mono - If they loved the songwriting and emotional moments, go Crawler And once they've bounced around, TANGK is a culmination of new sounds that help the band go towards the future. Best of luck!"

While I still love listening to this record, and adore how dense it is, now I'm more acquainted with the band and Post-Rock music, it just didn't feel right to have at a 100. Still, a great album!"
