I want my mommy.
This is a very heavy record. I mean, the bands name is Napalm Death. What else was I expecting?
It's got a 3 second song called I Suffer. What the hell else was I expecting?
The album is called Scum! WHAT THE FUCK ELSE WAS I EXPECTING?!
Most of the time it didn't even feel like music, it just felt like a punch to the senses, spitting directly into the face of God as it bellows, screams and writhes around it it's political pus. It's a dirty ass punk record, with genuinely ... read more
EDIT: 🚨 FUCK YOU 🚨
When I popped this on for the first time, I had no idea what to expect. From the near cult perfection status this record has created, it seemed like this record was larger then life itself. So, what's all the hullabaloo about DJ Shadow, I thought? Is this as timeless as I was expecting?
What I got was not what I was expecting, but yes. Yes yes yes.
Essentially, this is a group of tightly knotted and high quality beats made by a extremely creative and passionate ... read more
Ladies and Gentlemen, ambient metal at it's finest.
Usually with ambient records I have some sort of story or experience or anything of interest. But for this one, this was a different type of experience. I was on my way to Wellington, which from where I live is about a 5 hour drive. So, I decided that I'd load up some albums that I've never heard before to see if they were up my alley or not. This album I put on by pure accident, having hit the wrong button on the wrong Spotify playlist. So, ... read more
EDIT: As of 6/29/2020, Jordan Groggs, key member of Injury Reserve, has died. If you've read this review, then you know that I had a conversation with Groggs, so this is the first time that i've been truly moved by an aritsts death since Bowie or Neil Pert. I want to keep this review as it is, as a moment in time to show how amazing Groggs was as a performer and as a person, and how he acted to a stranger form NZ (with kindness). Please, if you are fans of Injury Reserve, please donate to his ... read more
So. Interesting story.
Recently, U2 announced some upcoming gigs around the world playing this album in it's entirety. Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea...and New Zealand. And of coarse, here in NZ, we only have a couple of big bands come around once every couple years. The time Foo Fighters came round last year, literally everyone I knew went to that gig. Everyone. So, U2 coming? Playing one of their biggest albums in its entirety? In New Zealand? With Noel Gallagher opening no less! ... read more
H01Y 7UCK! This album has me SWEATING!
So, Denzel. One of the most talked about 'underrated' rappers in recent memory, nearly every record this man touches turns to bangerific gold. From the ambitious and experimental TA13OO to the filled to the brim banger fest of 32 Zel, ever album this man has made has been at lest talked about every time it rolls around. I mean, me staying up at 1AM in the morning just to hear a album is something that I didn't really And, after the Goliath of creativity ... read more
A small review for a small little EP.
Being a fan of Tabby's YouTube personality and the wacked out and interesting project peachfuzz!, I was pretty excited for this little EP. Tabby has a booming artistic vision and wild character that makes every track he's on boom with fun and personality.
And this EP is quite nice! At only 18 minutes, this seems to be a small little plate of tasty molecules of Tabby refining his flow and writing to tide people over until his next big project. It doesn't ... read more
It's a Cat!
I don't know what exactly made me listen to this album. I knew about the existence of Yasuaki through that Japanese Ambience record that dropped in 2019, and his contributions to that were outstandingly great. So, I obviously was interested in what he could do on his own project.
And I honestly didn't except Japanese Jazz to be a thing until now. This sounds like the best Phil Collins album he never made, but with much more interesting soundscapes, instrumentation and production. ... read more
Oh boy oh boy oh boy I am so unbelievably hyped to listen to whatever this new project will be. Even though Fishing for Fishies was a lovely treat, this might end up being my AOTY at this point.
I mean, it's King Gizzard doing Thrash Metal! Goddamn Trash Metal!!! What's not to love?!
He fucks himself with a broom. 10/10
I'm gonna use this review to review the Netflix special, because to be fair, if it wasn't for the Netflix special, this album wouldn't exist. Half of The Lonely Islands job is to create captivating and hilarious music videos anyway, so why not look at this albums reason for existing as well?
So, is the special good, and does it live up to the expectations that The Lonely Island set themselves with Popstar? Wholeheartedly yes. In fact, i'd say that in ... read more
So you know how with guitars you can have different types of notes? Like, with the way you play the strings? So, if To Be Kind was a note, it would be a power chord. This album on the other hand is more of a muted note.
Did that analogy make sense to anyone but me? No, but i'm leaving it in baby!
Wow. What a way to conclude a damn trilogy. Swans have officially become one of, if not the most interesting band in rock right now, and perhaps of all time. Their inability to give in to what people ... read more
2019 is the year of the soul-funk apparently.
Talk about no expectations. I had no idea what I was getting myself into on this record. Steve Lacy is a name i’ve heard a lot and nothing about. All I know is that he was a collaborator on the latest Vampire Weekend album, he’s the guitarist in the band The Internet, and that this is his debut project. That’s it. But, Sunflower was one of my favorite tracks off of FOTB, and curiosity got the better of me, and decided to listen to ... read more
The reason why the main theme of this album is fire is because its lit. I’m not sorry.
Goddamn have I slept on this guy. The fact that one of the tags for this album was ‘oh boy’ tells you how excited I was for this record. I've never gotten around to listening to Flying Lotus’ dense and enticing discography, but goddamn was I ever intrigued. Not only is he a darling in the indie rap scene, but his wild creativity is something that is genuinely awe inspiring, with a ... read more
This isn't your average every day darkness. This is...Advanced Darkness.
Oh boy oh boy was I excited for this record. The cover art has intimidated and interested me ever since my small child brain saw it browsing Spotify one day back when it was first released. That cover art has stuck in my brain like a knife, and I have always wanted to listen to what exactly this album had in store for me as soon as I could. It's such an evil image, and I was over the moon to finally be confronted with the ... read more
And now we enter the modern era of Swans...
Trying to follow Soundtracks for the Blind is a feat that no band can pull off. An album that literally has been praised as audible perfection, a record that is more in common with films then it does actual music. It's a tough act to follow, and even Swans know this. This album comes after a long 14 year hiatus from the band, and with that amount of time and energy being held from Swans, one could imagine that they almost could be seen as a new band ... read more
It's weird how we disapprove of Stans for artists like Ariana Grande because they flood the reviews, but at the end of the day we are the just the same.
Anyway, we Stan Tyler the Creator and his seemingly endless creativity.
Tyler could have literally done anything with this project. Like anything. Coming straight off of Flower Boy, the album that expanded Tyler's potential from dark, distorted and demented persona to pop star in seemingly hours. So the question with this record, which had no ... read more
Hello! And welcome to Album of the Year reviewer tutorial!
Step One: Being a New Zealander on this site is like a constant lottery win, because we get records a day early, meaning that I can put anything in this review and because it's early, the algorithm helps me out and I can be a shameless whore every Friday!
Step Two: Make sure no one does a review more then 5 likes before you post. Hell, I'm probably too late to this record, because I didn't wake up on the spot at 1am!
Step Three: Write ... read more
So you know that prog-metal artist that made that dense Metal/Disney/Jazz/Electronic/Prog record this year? Yeah, this is him making a concept album comprised entirely out of Punk Parody songs. I'm not joking. They are however!
First off, the music is actually damn good. For a obviously tongue in cheek parody of punk, it's still much more musical interesting then some of even the better records coming out at the time. I'd take this record over the average Blink-182 record, and as a joke, it's ... read more
So.
I can already tell that this record, even though as of writing this section of the review, is gonna be a big one. I mean i'd hope that a 2 hour long record, an album that's longer then most movies, would be at lest an attempt at something groundbreaking, game changing and mind blowing. Hell, if anything i'd scared to even touch this. How can I do justice to a record that seemingly is perfect in the eyes and ears of literally anyone who listens to it? It's almost like the Holy Mountain of ... read more
I listened to this song 5 minutes ago.
I legit just forgot the entire song.
