Lightning Bolt - Ride the Skies
83

This was made with a bass guitar. Fucking HOW.

One of the nosiest and off the wall 'bass and drum' projects i've heard in a while. Some of the sounds here are genuinely out of this world. The drumming is wild and intesly precise. The bass work is some of the wildest and off the chain i've heard in a long ass time. The vocals, when they do present themselves, are as nutty as the rest of it. It's not an entirely deep record, or even one of any real depth in the grad scheme of things, but it's a ... read more

Rico Nasty - Nasty

B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-A-N-G-E-R-S

While it is clear this is Rico's debut project, this shit has some slapping bangers. It's a hype album for sure, and it absolutely slaps you in the face with the hardcore banger-rama that this album has. While it feels a little on the goofy side, it's still a huge push of adrenaline and energy with a charismatic and interesting MC. When people talk about how Lil Pump and Playboi Carti are good because 'it's just for 'bangers' and dumb fun', I can now point to this ... read more

Moses Sumney - Aromanticism
76

Hmm. The instrumentation here is nice, and Moses Sumney has such a fantastic and giant voice that it can break doors down, but much of this album is just sort of plodding along at a medium pace. It's not that it's god awful, it's just lacking this energy that I know Moses Sumney can provide. It's a good record, don't get me wrong. It oozes sleek, graceful melodies like no-ones business. It's got amazing production, intensely emotional performances. And Moses's voice is angelic to the ears, ... read more

Swans - Children of God
95

Oh boy, my favorite folk album.
I fucking loved this. A gothic, folky, love filled beating that was wondrous from start to finish. The switch from Holy Money to this is extremely impressive to say the lest. It's a more accessible, much less experimental, yet still adventurous and interesting. It never feels like Swans have neutered themselves to reach this new It's doesn't feel as if Swans are 'selling out', more so reaching out to new horizons. It's a deeply critical album, aiming it's ... read more

Swans - Holy Money

It's not you Holy Money, its me.

One of my big fears is restriction. It terrifies me to my core. When ever I feel constricted, I feel like I need to scream. And yeah, I felt that feeling listening to this album. There's not a single thing about this record that hasn't already been said that I would more or less parrot. It just feels like a more interesting, justifiable and all in all just better version of Greed. But, some of the same complaints I had with that record can be carried over to ... read more

Flight of the Conchords - Live in London
80

As a New Zealander, i'm legally obliged to review this.

In all honesty, this has no right to be this damn catchy and well constructed. Musically it's much better then your average comedy duo. It's hard to not only be musically savvy enough to make some of these compositions stick as well as they do, but to also to make them as funny as they are. And it's genuinely funny, with the duo's dry delivery ironically adding tons of personality and charisma. From the dad-rock-esq Iain and Deanna to the ... read more

Toilet paper please.

Hoo boy that's some death ass death metal. Grimey, nasty, energetic and in your face, it's like an atom bomb going off in your face. The intrumentation is wild yet proficient, with the rythem section firing off all cylinders, and the guitar work absolutely laying down the pavement with crushing riffs and extremely talented solos. And amoungst the chaos of the intrumentation lies some of the most demented vocals I've heard in quite some time, sounding less like a human and ... read more

Swans - Greed
87

Slow, plodding, ominous, stomping and...kinda boring. Stripping the 'heavy as sin' elements of Swans no wave sound leaves a atmospheric bare bones record that isn't awful, but isn't as interesting or developed as the sounds the band would play with later. It's repetitive, slow, and feels like it's building to something truly amazing, and then it ends. It's all build-up and very little pay off. And while it's not awful, it's still a far cry from what this band is capable of. The most interesting ... read more

I'm genuinely tempted to put this in my party playlist, this tracks a bop.

Swans - Body to Body, Job to Job

Pretty nice compilation. If the uber-heavy and disturbingly dark era of Swans is your favorite incarnation of the group, then this should be right up your ally (even though it is this sound with worse production and mixing). It's got some great tracks on here, although I will admit it's nowhere close to feeling essential. Most of the material here you can here all throughout Swans wildly interesting discography, at it's best possible quality. If your a die-hard Swans enthusiant, give it a try. ... read more

Swans - Young God

Holy shit I have never felt more uncomfortable listening to a EP before. The lyrics are tortured and angry. The insturmenation is bonkers and smiley. The production is dark and dingy. By god. This is NOT for the faint of heart. It's evil. It's tormented. It's...by god it's fucking against nature. It feels like torture music. All the tracks are dragged out, stripped down to it's bare bones, and forced to walk the whole ten yards, no matter how much it hurts to walk on broken legs. This EP feels ... read more

Swans - Cop

Before: I'm genuinely scared to listen to this after Filth. It can't get heavier, it just cant. There is no way.

After: Oh thank god. But holy shit those last three tracks fucked me up something GOOD.

It's a pretty decent follow up to the insane Filth. This might take a while to grow on me, but I honestly kind of prefer Filth. Obviously there is so much good here that I can't just dismiss it all as just "another heavy Swans record", but it's hard to live up to expectation after ... read more

Swans - Filth

This is it folks. I had to stop it multiple times because I was about to break down in tears. This might be the new 'heaviest' album to beat. And I do mean beat.

I feel like listening to this album is the equivalent of Michael Gira coming to my house with a baseball bat, smacking me over 50 times, stomping on my face, pulling out my teeth, breaking my legs, killing my pets, pissing on my furniture, cutting my shoe lasses, burning my house down and fucking my mother all at the same time. And I ... read more

Various Artists - 環境音楽 (Kankyō ongaku): Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980–1990
83

This album is like soup.

It's comforting, peaceful, filling and just feels good in your soul, yet the music (even though it's extremely dreamy) is still forceful and doesn't feel meaningless. The production and soundscapes created in these pieces are nothing short of delectable, like a small cozy fire being lit inside you, or a hug from a great friend. I'm not the biggest nerd when it comes to ambient music, but this is a compilation I really enjoyed. It's an album I hope to come back to when ... read more

Devo - Something for Everybody
NR

I feel like I would have loved this album when I was 13. It definitely sounds like if Devo were made in the 2010s, which I feel like was the intention. It's loud, crunchy, well performed and fantastically produced quirky dance music. But...it does sound just like every other 'oddball' dance record that came out of this period in music. There is definitely more emphasis on creating something new and interesting that those other records don't have, and some really great guitar ... read more

Weezer - Weezer (Black Album)
52

Hmm. So this a dumpster fire.

Weezer haven't had the best couple of years, with their records being flammed from head to toe (deservedly). It was clear that Weezer just wanted to have fun from the moment I hit play on The Teal Album (doesn't excuse it from being god awful). And it's also clear that Weezer want to move to a more pop centric sound on this album. From the funk layerd Can't Fight The Hustle, to the Uber hip hop influenced Zombie Bastards, it's very clear from the first couple of ... read more

Have a Nice Life - The Unnatural World
89

Really good follow up in my opinion. It's kind of hard to distance this record from the work of Deathconsciousness, especially when a similar soundscape and themes come into play. While not as game changing as Deathconsciousness, it's still a heavy, bleak and utterly gorgeous work, that could potentially guide people unacquainted into more drone-y type music. It's even slightly more heavy then Deathconsciousness, with the blaring guitars seemingly being turned from 10 to 11 on this record, and ... read more

Before: oh wow, they use the painting I like in the cover, wonder what this will be like :)

After: arrowheadsarrowheadsarrowheadsarrowheadsarrowheads

This album. How the fuck was this made by two people? I don't even know what to say. It's grand, gigantic, explosive, massive, dark, otherworldly in places, and just...wow. It's almost impossible to review this album, because it has so much to say and do and exist that it's almost unlike anything else I've ever heard. It's an album, while not ... read more

Sigur Rós - Valtari

Who knew It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia would get me into Avant-garde Icelandic ambient rock?

This music is georgeous. It's a blissful, intensly crafted piece of what could be considered 'nee classical'. Each track brings more creativity and passion then the last, with the arrangements, while sounding similer, being so beautiful and graceful that it's almost like your being transported to another world. From the lush intrumentation to the fragile yet powerful vocals, it's trancendence music ... read more

"@SamHatedSBTH Joy as an Act of Resistance is an absolute essential record, so that's probably where i'd direct a newcomer. If they like that album then its down to what they really liked from it: - If they want something more raw, go with Brutalism - If they want something more catchy, go Ultra Mono - If they loved the songwriting and emotional moments, go Crawler And once they've bounced around, TANGK is a culmination of new sounds that help the band go towards the future. Best of luck!"

While I still love listening to this record, and adore how dense it is, now I'm more acquainted with the band and Post-Rock music, it just didn't feel right to have at a 100. Still, a great album!"
