[ALBUM OF THE DAY CHALLENGE: DAY TWO]

HOLY SHIT!! Color me impressed!

So I'm probably not gonna write much about this since it is just a 10 minute lofi instrumental hip hop track, but Jesus Christ did I love this thing!

It's dark, somber, moody and melecholic without speaking a word. It's georgus, with the entire mix being this beautiful sprawling track with this seemingly defetist and nihilist tone, which is goddamn impressive for a really long beat.

And the length is absolutely perfect. ... read more

[ALBUM OF THE DAY CHALLENGE: DAY 1NE]

Doing a challenge where i'm looking at AOTY users work to give further exposure to those who are trying to make it in the industry right here in AOTY, starting with....We Are Only Human Once!

It's sad, but I definitely feel like i'm coming in half cocked not knowing much about WOHO.

I mean, for all of the AOTY artists who I tend to cover on this site, this is basically the first time I remember a AOTY user having a bonified discography to their name. ... read more

BAND BINGE: THE STROKES (PART 2WO OF 2WENTY1NE)

'I want to be forgotten and I don't want to be reminded.'

This album is the perfect breakup album.

Coming hot, and I mean HOT off the trails of their tour of their debut record (Is This It came out 2001, they toured relentlessly for a year, and in 2003 this came out. Fucking how.), The Strokes wanted to sharpen up their sound. They wanted more experimental mixing, sharper instrumentation, more heartfelt writing and clean cut production for ... read more

Various Artists - SCOOB! The Album

'Like, zoinks Scoob.'

There are entities in this world that are here only to suffer. Some, only to destroy. And some to pay no mind to either, and to just accept the circumstances that bond us to this mortal coil. These roles we play belong to the 'worlds' plan for us all, as we all reluctantly play a part in the cogwheels of the philosophy of the world, burning a swollen tumor into our mental state to satisfy this so called 'plan', as we all scream into the great unknown, into the void we ... read more

Sparks - A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip
79

Rainbow cum gang!

Sparks are a band that have always, and I mean ALWAYS had a fascination with. From the goofy lyrical content, to the Devo-esq instrumentation, the wacky combination of the pencil mustache stylings of Ron Mael and the vocal talents of Russell Mael, and just how weird and out there Sparks have been in their whopping 25 album career.

But that's one of the biggest reasons I haven't gotten into them. 25 records! I think i'd die before I listen to every record Sparks have been ... read more

BAND BINGE: THE STROKES (PART 1NE OF 2WENTY1NE)

If I were to describe being a teenager in one album, it would probably sound something like Is This It.

The Strokes. I mean, what even IS there to say about The Strokes? Not only one of the biggest indie rock acts of the 2000s, but are one of those acts that somehow, with nearly no explanation, have obtained gigantic 'rockstar' success not by being the grandest, the most in your face or the most 'out there' band on the planet, but by being the ... read more

HMLTD - West of Eden

CW; child murder, dysphoria, toxic friendships, suicide, self harm, death, Stockholm syndrome.

I believe that HMLTD's debut record, West of Eden, is a rock opera concept album based on the mental anguish of millennials living in a post-apocalyptic 21st century and the mental unraveling of a suppressed trans women named Joanna.

But before I go deep into the concepts and themes explored in this album, I should probably speak on the actual music only slightly. Overall, I think this album is a ... read more

The Aquabats - The Fury of The Aquabats!

So...This is a collaboration between me and @Toasterqueen12. We decided we would listen to an album and each make a review, then we would trade our paragraphs to see what a jumbled mess we made. Enjoy!

This album reminded me of my lost innocence.

Ska has always been a sore foot for me when listening to music. Everytime I ask someone 'What's something Fun, Lighthearted, and a little wacky!', the only things I get in return are those dreaded palm muted 'beep, beep' chords, fast apced drums and ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - Making a Door Less Open
84

Don't worry Pitchfork. Your indie darlings aren't dead just yet.

I don't really have a lot to say on Car Seat Headrest, weirdly enough. While I admittedly haven't had the chance to listen much the the pre-label records Car Seat Headrest have put out on Bandcamp (due to pure laziness on my part honestly), I've always been fascinated by this group. The last two records Will Toledo has put out have obviously been two of the greatest and influential rock records of the 2010s, with Twin Fantasy ... read more

(First review in a while! Let me know what I can improve. Trying to get back into the swing of things, and this is the first review I've written since February)

OK people: let's talk about recorded covers.

If you know anything about me or my musical taste, or hell, even if you've read my past reviews, you'll know one fact about me: I cannot STAND recorded covers of already recorded songs. In all honesty, if your going into the studio in the hopes making a cover and changing NOTHING about the ... read more

Do you hear that? That's the sound of some real goddamn potential.

So for those unaware, Spiral Curse, AKA Plats (on AOTY at lest) is someone that has inspired me and this site for a pretty decent time. Their reviews are well spoken, their tastes are varied and their ideas are extremely interesting. Seeing Plats page is almost to take a hammer to the artists taste, allowing viewers to deconstruct their tastes and find similarities between the art they consume to the artist of Spiral Curse. ... read more

Have a good day everyone, and celebrate!

Poppy - BLOODMONEY
98

I seriously think that this single is near to perfect.

From the genuinely destructive verses that go harder then Kanye West at 'certain award shows', to the almost middle eastern vocal melody in the chorus, to the horrifically glitchy and hard hitting industrial flair and that almost Queen-esq solo at the end? With that calming, atmospheric and beautiful outro to top it all off, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

This track is so infecious, so in your face and so, so, SO MUCH FUN! I ... read more

Various Artists - Teen Beach Movie
19

So I believe that Teen Beach Movie, as an album, is secretly a psychotic, nihilistic anti-matrimony concept record about a serial killer coming to terms that they have a serious blood-lust. Let me explain.

First off, before I do a deep dive, let me just say that I don't 'like' this record. The production is too overblown, the singing is too clean, at taken face value with the film it doesn't have a lot of substance and it just gets grading after a while. However, I have to agree that the ... read more

(Band Binge: Beach House Part Three of Eight)

Guys. It's clicked.

Oh thank god this was good. I was worried to death that I wouldn't like this album. After how high my hopes were for their last two albums, the letdown (aside from a few really good tracks) was devastating. I was fully expecting for this album to follow in the same vein and continue to give me pretty nicely produced sludge-pop...what I didn't expect was for this album to actually connect with me in any way.

I think I am ... read more

Have a Nice Life - Sea of Worry

And here we see AOTY stans riot. Everyone's favorite shoegaze bitches are back with their version of a punk record.

You already know how this goes. It's Have a Nice Life! Creators of two fantastic shoegaze records that have been a STAPLE in nearly every AOTY list for 'best albums of all time'. We ALL know that Deathconciousness is a modern classic, and we ALL know how much The Unnatural World opened up Have A Nice Life to a more wider demographic, becoming accessible while still remaining ... read more

Beach House - Devotion
68

(Band Binge: Beach House Part Two of Eight)

...Am I missing something here?

Look, this album isn't bad. It's far from it actually. It's sweet, wholesome, delicate, the songwriting is on point and the production is dense and off the wall. And compared to their debut, there is definite improvement. But...goddamn I was just bored to tears. I had to chuck on Devo halfway through listening just to bring me back to life!

I think i'm just the wrong guy to be looking at this group in depth. Everyone ... read more

Be me. I'm enjoying myself a good sandwich. A turkey sandwich to be exact, with mayo and the crusts cut off. I'm having a good time, a good day, a good hour. It's calm, meditative and pleasing. I'm in my lungs in my couch, and am watching an episode of Tim and Eric on TV. Then all of a sudden...CRASH! The window of my lounge breaks.

'What the fuck was that?', I say to myself. I out down my half eaten sandwich and pause the TV (I have Tevo, it's fine) and investigate. Around the corner of the ... read more

Beach House - Beach House

(Band Binge: Beach House Part One of Eight)

Eh. It's fine.

So i'm not well versed in Beach House...like, at all. Seriously, I haven't heard a single album, haven't heard a track, haven't even heard a single goddamn sound of this band...but yet here we are. I've just heard they are amazing, and after looking at their discogoraphy, they seemed like a perfect band to band binge. So, when I asked what people wanted me to cover for the series, a collective 'BEACH HOUSE PLEASE' was uttered. Hence ... read more

Various Artists - The Needle Drop

Hi everyone, Pipethony Pipetano here, the Internets LAMEST music nerd, hope your doing well, and it's time for a review of The Needle Drops new compilation: The Needle Drop LP.

This is the newest compilation of Connecticut based music reviewer Anthony Fantano, whose music and musical taste has been adored and criticized by many. Adored enough, to warrant a compilation of hand picked cuts from some of Anthony's favorite artists, for charity. Artists that range from hip hop to noise rock to even ... read more

"@SamHatedSBTH Joy as an Act of Resistance is an absolute essential record, so that's probably where i'd direct a newcomer. If they like that album then its down to what they really liked from it: - If they want something more raw, go with Brutalism - If they want something more catchy, go Ultra Mono - If they loved the songwriting and emotional moments, go Crawler And once they've bounced around, TANGK is a culmination of new sounds that help the band go towards the future. Best of luck!"

While I still love listening to this record, and adore how dense it is, now I'm more acquainted with the band and Post-Rock music, it just didn't feel right to have at a 100. Still, a great album!"
