dodie - Human
82

If I’m Being Honest (buh-dum tss) with myself, I love dodie’s videos! I would always watch a video or listen to a song she wrote when I’m feeling down. That’s why “Human” made me smile. Her voice is angelic and her lyrics always resonate with me. It’s nothing special but it works well enough and I would be happy to listen to it again.

Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow
90

When I heard “Seventeen” for the first time before coming into this record, I knew I was in for a treat! The rest of “Remind Me Tomorrow” shares pretty much everything from that track. The new, dark synthpop sound is great and Sharon Van Etten’s songwriting are phenomenal! It’s not perfect, though. The second half of the record isn’t as consistent as the first half and “I Told You Everything” is kind of a weak opener. But those are only tiny ... read more

James Blake - Assume Form
93

“Assume Form” is the most beautiful, complete and accessible record James Blake has put out to date! The features are unexpectedly impeccable here (especially ROSALÍA and André 3000), James is growing so much more confident in his vocals, melodies and writing and there’s not a single song here that I legitimately don’t love! Overall, this is my first must listen of 2019!

Daniel Johnston - Hi, How Are You: The Unfinished Album
97

“Hi, How Are You” is an album that you need to listen at least once in your life. Sure, it’s shoddily-recorded but it needs to be heard in order to appreciate how much of a hidden gem this is. This is probably one of the strangest albums out there with Daniel Johnston’s high pitched delivery on top of barely-there instrumentals. Kinda relaxing, really. But look a little further and there’s a lot of substance here to be gobbled up. Daniel Johnston is famously open ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
98

“Teens Of Denial” shouldn’t just be regarded an important album for Car Seat Headrest, it should be regarded as an important album for indie rock music of the 2010’s in general. Will Toledo puts so much of his heart and soul into both his songwriting and his performances. Otherwise, the whole album is a blast with tight instrumentation, great production, infectious melodies and poignant lyrics.

Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Style
87

Our favorite furry and his friends finally got signed into a record label! That means we get remakes of early Car Seat Headrest songs! The compositions are a lot tighter and the sound is much better than their original versions while still keeping with their lo-fi roots. Otherwise, they’re still the same songs and Will Toledo remains one of the greatest, most emotionally potent songwriters in the modern indie scene!

Car Seat Headrest - How To Leave Town
99

Not really an EP but m’kay.

“How to Leave Town” is yet another personal, passionate, reflective and well-written "album" (because I feel better saying that it's an album) with tight instrumentation and a spacey, psychedelic aesthetic. Also, "The Ending of Dramamine" is one of Car Seat Headrest's best songs!

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
94

Hideo Kojima will be inspired by this one day...

Honestly, this is one of the more underrated albums in David Bowie’s discography. I think “Diamond Dogs” is important because it concluded his glam rock style in such a well-executed fashion! The post-apocalyptic style is intriguing, the tracks flow very seamlessly and it has some of Bowie’s best singing!

David Bowie - Aladdin Sane
96

“Aladdin Sane” continues David Bowie’s 70’s winning streak by taking what was so great about his previous records and building upon them while moving towards a more straightforward rock sound and introducing the new titular character! The oddball lyricism, the great performances, the consistency and personality flowing through these songs, it’s all authenticaly Bowie and it’s exactly why I love him so much!

James Blake - The Colour in Anything
68

I absolutely adore James Blake’s music. The same goes for “The Colour In Anything”... sometimes. There are definitely some gorgeous high points in the tracklist, some of his best tracks to date, and it's cool to hear James growing ever more confident in his voice. But did it really need to be this long? Like, if some tracks were left on the cutting room floor, this could’ve been another great James Blake LP. Instead, we have 76 minutes of beautifully-constructed ... read more

You Tell Me - You Tell Me

It’s alright for the most part. The baroque-indie pop sound is pretty cool and the lyrics can be well-written but it’s nothing I’ll remember nor is it anything that I’ll return to. Overall, pretty standard indie stuff.

It’s short but I don’t really care to fault this record, honestly. These are very pretty and heartwarming acoustic tunes that just make me want to lay in bed, cuddle with my pillow and close my eyes as these “lullabies” drift me off to sleep.

Radiohead - Ill Wind
NR

For a b-side, this is actually pretty and meticulously-crafted. I don’t think I would’ve minded if this was on “AMSP”. Though at the same time, this isn’t as heavy on the heart as the majority of that album.

Edit (OS: 8): DAMMIT! THE FAN IN ME CAN’T HOLD IT MUCH LONGER! I LOVE THIS SHIT!!!

Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks - Enter the Slasher House

Avey Tare’s melodies are always great and they translate well here. But the effects wash out the otherwise decent instrumentation and it can get drab at certain points.

Honestly, I think this album is pretty underrated. Sure, it’s a change in direction from “Merrieweather Post Pavilion”. But I think this new sound still plays to AnCo’s strengths with beautiful, psychedelic production, tight songwriting, enticing rhythms and a great sense of melody throughout!
