Portishead - Third
95

After more than a decade of silence, Portishead stray away from their trip hop sound into a more electronic, krautrock-inspired sound, and it works! The production is beautiful, Beth Gibbons' vocals are as angelic as ever and it has a lot more variety than their previous effort. Overall, "Third" is probably one of the greatest comeback records I've heard in recent memory!

Portishead - Dummy

This album just blew me away the first time I listened to it! The production still sounds amazing today! The haunting atmosphere of the hip hop-flavored beats combined with the bass and drums, placed oh so perfectly in the mix, is pretty much everything I want in a trip hop album! Beth Gibbons' angelic vocals are just the icing on this already beautiful cake!

SWMRS - Berkeley's On Fire

Even if it has a few highlights, like the catchy yet surprisingly off-kilter title track, the rest of "Berkeley's On Fire" is uninspired and other attempts at experimentation can be downright bad.

HOMESHAKE - Helium
57

“Helium” is like those "lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to" livestreams on YouTube. It's nice background music to just put on while lazing around and a beat might catch your ear, but a lot of it is pretty forgettable. In fact, it wouldn’t be inappropriate if it were actually placed in one of them.

Ladytron - Ladytron

It has a cool, retro feel to it and the production is really good, but it's extremely formulaic to the point where it gets tiring halfway through.

Czarface & Ghostface Killah - Czarface Meets Ghostface
89

I enjoyed the living shit out of this! Everything just spews personality right from the cover art! The production (complete with comic book and wrestling references) is outstanding, but the real highlight is in the chemistry between Czarface and Ghostface! Their energetic performances and flows correlate so well with each other and their lyrics are brilliant and genuinely funny!

Avril Lavigne - Head Above Water
32

I know Avril Lavigne as much as you do, with hits like "Sk8ter Boi" and "Complicated" and horrible tunes like "Hello Kitty". Of course I didn't care about this album even before listening to it. So, after my first (and only) listen, all I have to say is this. Her voice is still alright and the production is tolerable, but "Head Above Water" is generic and samey at its best and, at its worst, obnoxious, cringe-worthy, tonally inconsistent and lacking in ... read more

The White Stripes - Elephant
94

Now, with "Elephant", they have finally amped up their sound to perfection! The whole thing is filled with anthemic hits, from the addictive guitar riff from "Seven Nation Army" to the simple drumming and swagger of "The Hardest Button To Button"! While it's not as adventurous as "White Blood Cells", it's still one hell of a rock record with memorable writing, incredible riffs and great hooks!

"White Blood Cells" builds upon and improves everything that made The White Stripes' previous records great and refined their simple garage rock sound to a tee! Outstanding riffs, great performances, incredible and honest songwriting and catchy lyrics make this one of the best indie rock records of the 2000's!

Also, Jack is allowed to write about other people cuz Meg says it's fine, she don't consider it cheating, now.

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)
98

"Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)" manages to perfectly blend both the experimental and accessible parts of Bowie's career, making it the perfect way to start off a new decade! This album is also aggressive as hell, dealing with topics such as fascism, the New Wave movement and teenage fashion (at the time) with brilliantly-written grace and charismatic performances! Otherwise, outstanding production, funky instrumentation and great callbacks to David's big hits makes this one of his ... read more

David Bowie - Lodger
92

While "Lodger" is the "weakest" of the Berlin trilogy, it still closes it off in a mighty damn fine way! It feels like a weird but "Fantastic Voyage" around the world to address the many problems with society. Overall, the 70's has been the best decade in Bowie's career!

David Bowie - "Heroes"
98

Even if the release window between "Low" and this album was small, "Heroes" still succeeds at doing exactly what 70's Bowie albums do right. Great writing, outstanding production and a huge display of creativity courtesy of David himself! It also contains that title track. Goddamn that's a fucking classic! Though I do admit that a couple of Brian Eno's ambient works on here don't come off as strong as they did on "Low". But that's only a teeny tiny complaint.

David Bowie - Low

When I was younger, I thought this was one of his worst projects. "Where's Bowie?" and "I don't like this" pretty much summed up my response to this album. Fast forward "FIVE YEARS" later, my musical tastes have grown smarter. After countless listens, it finally clicked! "Low" is a beautiful, atmospheric and challenging album that shines so well even when Bowie isn't on the mic! Having said that, I'm having second thoughts between which album is my ... read more

HEALTH - VOL. 4 :: SLAVES OF FEAR
79

YESSSSSS! I was looking for another post-industrial/noise rock record! "SLAVES OF FEAR" has sounds that got me up from my seat the moment "PSYCHONAUT" came on! It has a lot of great experimental ideas while also combining elements of electropop and trap into HEALTH's sound, which would usually be a turnoff for me. Overall, I really recommend that you give this a shot!

Imma just hop into the "IT BANGS" bandwagon. *hop* So how're you doin'?

Jessica Pratt - Quiet Signs

This is beautiful! The simplicity of the instrumentation is soothing, the lyrics are incredible and Jessica's voice, while an acquired taste for some, actually warmed my heart throughout its 27-minute run-time. All of these highs makes "Quiet Signs" an outright pleasing-to-the-ears folk album.

Ariana Grande - thank u, next
53

Am I surprised by the dip in quality from last year’s “Sweetener”? No. Am I surprised that Ariana Grande’s voice is good? No. But what surprised me about “thank u, next” is how uninspired it all is. Arizona Grand Canyon steals from many hit pop songs from last year. Why does “7 rings” sound like a horrible Princess Nokia track? Why does “bloodline” sound like “High Hopes” by Panic! at the Disco? Xiu Xiu - Girl with Basket of Fruit

This has to be one of the strangest recordings I've heard in a while! The track list varies from morbid to hilarious, sometimes even morbidly hilarious! Combined Jamie Stewart's eccentric vocals, frantic percussion, haunting atmosphere and twisted lyrics, "Girl with Basket of Fruit" is ugly, bizarre, noisy, polarizing, cartoonish, disturbing, terrifying, rewarding and a great AOTY contender!

Ariana Grande - Sweetener

Color me impressed! I was expecting myself to hate this album but I guess not. Yes, it's obviously watered-down for Top 40 pop radio and some of the lyrics can feel rushed. But the production is great, the hooks are sticky and Ariana's voice is amazing! Like, even haters of Ariana Grande will admit that her voice is freaking great! Overall, "Sweetener" is one of the bigger surprises of last year.
