Squid - Bright Green Field
75

This new wave of expirmental rock & post punk bands has been incredibly exciting to see! Bands like Black Mid, Black Country New Road, Shame & now Squid can add their names into that catalogue. With their debut release of Bright Green Fields, feeling the most spaced out & punk influenced between all these groups. Its an album that relies on heavily distorted grooves & wide open spaces of ambience for our front man to shout his eccentric mantra's over. All with the occasional ... read more

twenty one pilots - Scaled and Icy

Okay so first impressions, luckily none of the songs are as bad as choker or Saturday (small edit, bounce man is annoying and sucks).. The outside is decent, I like it but I doubt I’ll listen to it much. The only song I can see myself coming back to is mulberry street. It’s the one song where the instrumental compliments the tone and lyrics of the song very well. The upbeat nature is accompanied by a plucky piano and sampled trumpets it works quite well with his optimistic and warm ... read more

Gojira - From Mars to Sirius

Kick ass record to start my Gojira binge. It’s been so long since I’ve heard a chugging riff carry so much weight to it. The sound here is dense in its atmosphere, which is not only being created by talented musicians. But maybe even more importantly, is their strong song writing Taking influence from both extreme metal and progressive metal. Gojira holds these labels up with an iron fist & a tactful mind. As they weave a conceptual dystopia revolving around our planets struggle ... read more

twenty one pilots - Choker

stale beat
middling chorus
cool drum pattern that gets barely any shine
nice bridge, though its only because of the production
feels like a pop rock track with no identity
which is the worst part considering the album that came before it

I'M BOPPIN NO STOPPIN

Porter Robinson - Nurture
76

First ever experience with Robinson's music and what I can take away. Is that while these songs don't offer anything to unique. They are all effectively mixed and produced. Which when dealing with a electronic and indie pop record. It's one of the most essential elements. Songs are catchy enough to keep your attention all the way through. A pleasant listen to be sure.

Favorite Tracks: Get Your Wish, Musician, Blossom, do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do

Least Favorite: Wind Tempos, dullscythe

Hail the Sun - New Age Filth

REVIEW 100

If you like Hail the Sun's sound than you're gonna be more than pleased with their latest release. If you're not, then don't bother with it. But as someone who's a big fan of their output. But was left a bit disappointed with their last effort. I was skeptical to say the least with this project. However since linking up with DGD's producer. They've delivered some of their best work as a band. The song writing here is top notch stuff, with very few weak spots. Having a punchy mix and ... read more

BROCKHAMPTON - ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE

A burst of summer fun, that doenst hold back its emotional resonance. BROCKHAMPTONS first effort for this year. Delivers in many ways, but it stands out for how it’s able to balance its tone.

Favorite Tracks: BUZZCUT, DONT SHOOT UP THE PARTY, I’LL TAKE YOU ON, OLD NEWS, DEAR LORD, WHEN I BALL

Least Favorite: BANKROLL

A transformative album not just for hip hop or the music trends we'd see in the early 2010's. But just for me personally, Death Grips opened the world of hip hop to me. Before them, nothing ever clicked with me in the genre. Now I've found expirmental hip hop to contain some of the greatest artists I've ever heard before. The Money Store is an amazing record, with its themes of online paranoia, drug addiction & mental illness. It tackles issues that would come to be heavily discussed in the ... read more

Cage the Elephant - Thank You Happy Birthday
64

This speaks to me like a lot of hard rock/punk music from this time. First half is catchy if a bit rough around the edges. Loses its luster by the mid point, with repetitive song structures & the ever decreasing song writing quality.

Together Pangea - Badillac
78

Surprised to see a modern & popular punk/garage album. With some actual grit. While the record doesn’t break any new ground. Or have any super unique quality about it. That’s okay because it understands that fact. So it does it’s best to provide some well written and catchy music for the genre. Which to its credit, it very much succeeds in that effort. With the proper amount of intensity to sell itself, but still having plenty of broader appeal. Even the one slow song ... read more

LANDMVRKS - Lost in the Waves

Has the metalcore scene become so disillusioned with itself. That something so un special & lacking in any kind of hook. Is what is being hyped up as one of the biggest releases in the scene this year?

Animals as Leaders - The Madness of Many
75

Animals As Leaders continue to be the most interesting fully instrumental modern prog metal group. With this record they brought in more of the staccato riffing & technical djent overlay that they’re known for, but with MM the crew delve even further into their jazz roots and produce an album that is in complete and total conversation with itself. straying away from some of the cliche structures of modern prog metal and instead taking certain sounds and cliches and adopting them into ... read more

Florida Georgia Line - Life Rolls On
1

FGL's hit single "Meant to Be" is one of the most annoying songs to ever be conceived of by man. So if the same geniuses behind that make 16 tracks of boring, melodically dead, lazy country bro pop. Than a rating so generous is well deserved

Favorite Tracks: lol

Least Favorite tracks: 1-16

Death Grips - No Love Deep Web

"A lot of people are not into experimental experiences, hence a lot of complaints about this not having "the other aspects of Xiu Xiu that makes their music memorable" without further elaboration, a comment like this says more about their taste's than it is a critique of the music"

On Spamman's review of The Necks - Disquiet
""it's a track that is a journey, a story." In a sense The Neck's don't make stories within their music. They create static, explorative sonic environments built on repetitions & time manipulation, extensive run times help create the hypnotic effect, creating a mode of stasis where they can add new elements or change the specific details of these repetitions in order to alter the texture of the piece. What may seem like the exact same thing really isn't at all due to how they play around with microtones, pacing & then adding and subtracting pieces from the overall construct. I agree with your assessment on "Causeway" but it's strange to me that you don't see how elements are weaving in and out of the first two tracks."

"It wouldn't be a 10/10 if it was shorter. The length is integral to the experience of lulling you beyond considering time."

On s3sh's review of Xiu Xiu - Ignore Grief
"Come on man, I can understand where this perspective comes from, but it's sad to see people that wouldn't try to understand the art for what it is than for what their preconceptions of art would dictate for them to believe. Abstract art is art for a reason and its worth exploring why this album is the way it is or at least being able to formulate substantial criticisms for others to contend with instead of offering a statement so broad and dismissive that it begs to be replied too. Just sort of expressing some views the review conjured and not trying to make you feel worthless or express any kind of personal hatred :)"
On Echoesanywhere's review of Andrew Hill - Compulsion
"This review is a great example of reviewing abstract/difficult works of art. Following the music through its patterns (emotional, structural, musical) it reveals the core of what the art is and it doesn't have to be so impossible to define or require knowledge on music theory. The real key I've found is to just really tune yourself into the sound and what it's doing between all the musicians. It will speak to you."
On HomeSession3's review of The Mountain Goats - Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan
"Sounds really interesting! What mountain goats records would you recommend?"
On DAVECHER's review of Stan Getz & João Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
"I wish the bland recommended jazz had the same degree of warmth in the production & sensory depth in each instrument. Getz sax work is especially stupendous, take O’Grande Amour where he spends most of his time in hushed breath yet the whole thing is so playfully emotional. Making that first and final push at the end so impactful."

"I love this review and it's a style that I try to grasp when constricting certain reviews of mine, but rarely capture it as well as you do here. Less a checklist of good and bad qualities and instead you paint a picture of the records character and quality from within. Lovely stuff and my favorite review I've read this year."
