Dave Grohl did a really good job.

Botch - We Are the Romans
85

A mathcore classic, a record that with the help of Converge & The Dillinger Escape Plan pushed the genre into its peak commercial heights. And I'm glad to say it still holds up as a well aged piece of frenetic metal music. Jazz influences are abound on top of the pure fun of this album. The whole thing is a super tight & satisfying listen.

Polyphia - Ego Death
NR

i like guitar porn

Metallica - Master of Puppets

when the popularity is justified

Viagra Boys - Cave World

I like the cooky vibe of the whole thing, Punk Rock Loser is a song of the year contender & the album art is GOATED

I just wish I loved listening to the record more....

Björk - Fossora

Such humane feeling comes blooming out of this otherworldly pool of music.

Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future (The Extended Edition)
86

A cowboy bebop inspired jazz rap rendition of an already great Denzel Curry album?!?!

Yeah I fucking loved this!!!

Favorite Jams: Melt Sessions, X-Wing, Walkin, Larger Than Life, Angelz, Troubles, Ills, Worst Comes To Worst, Mental,

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Cool It Down
78

The ability you have to just lose yourself into the bright & luscious atmosphere of "Splitting Off the Edge of the World"............

There are three songs on here that make up some of my favorite music that I've heard all year. The vocals are filled with the right kind of shining confidence needed for such a big & beautiful sound. It's so rich and filled with texture, however that last half unfortunately doesn't come close to matching the first half. A possible AOTY that now ... read more

Freddie Gibbs - $oul $old $eparately
80

First Gibbs album was a really enjoyable experience. He has such a charming flow that is both tight & snappy. I was already sold on the record, but it wasn't till those last three songs where the emotions were really leaned into, which sealed the deal and elevated this project to another level.

Slipknot - The End, So Far
35

Lets get this out of the way so I can listen to that new Bjork record.

Slipknot have been lacking in clever songwriting & biting production for the last decade. "We Are Not Your Kind" showed the band still had the ability to deliver something with some actual smack to it. And I was really hoping they would either build off that sudden momentum and follow it up with an even harsher record. But its clear Corey and the gang just can't go the distance like they once could.

The Comet Is Coming - Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam
85

Comet Is Coming swerves in with a transcendental batch of psychedelic electronic jazz tracks. It hits the landing for the most part, but I'd be remised if I didn't mention how the best tracks on this album really shine and hit harder then the ones that don't.

The Mars Volta - The Mars Volta
40

There are moments of beauty here, but it is not worth wading through the monotonous nature of this project. Nothing ever develops into anything interesting.

Rina Sawayama - Hold the Girl
65

While I'm all for Rina sitting back from the dynamic expirmentation that was ever so present on her last LP. And going for a more simple, but effective approach to pop songwriting., the results come out very mixed.

Björk - Ovule
96

SHE DON'T MISS

Kanye West - Late Registration
85

Kanye West is a fucking superstar

Employing the melodic talents of Jon Brion brings the record's production a sense of lush vulnerability, embellishing the power of Kanye's popping production. The harmonies on songs like "Gone" serve to strengthen Kanye's emotional storytelling, while cuts like "Gold Digger" showcase how capable of a producer West is. There are no misses on this project & on first listen, every song on this stands out in some way.
Impeccable stuff

Björk - Atopos
95

LETS FUCKING GET THIS WEIRD ASS CLARINET HEAVY RHYTHM SHIT

JID - The Forever Story
88

I love the creativity in the structure, the emotional potency is peaking, reflective & inciteful lyrics, slick flows & memorable writing propels this up to be one of the freshest rap records I've heard in a long time.

Muse - Will of the People
25

Yes its tacky, unoriginal, cringe inducing, boring, goofy & annoying. But after listening to Master of Puppets for the first time this by comparison is just so...lame. At the end of the day rock & metal are cool as fuck and this fails at capturing this genre's most fundamental principle.

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock

It's jazzy post rock, did you really expect me not to love this thing??

"A lot of people are not into experimental experiences, hence a lot of complaints about this not having "the other aspects of Xiu Xiu that makes their music memorable" without further elaboration, a comment like this says more about their taste's than it is a critique of the music"

On Spamman's review of The Necks - Disquiet
""it's a track that is a journey, a story." In a sense The Neck's don't make stories within their music. They create static, explorative sonic environments built on repetitions & time manipulation, extensive run times help create the hypnotic effect, creating a mode of stasis where they can add new elements or change the specific details of these repetitions in order to alter the texture of the piece. What may seem like the exact same thing really isn't at all due to how they play around with microtones, pacing & then adding and subtracting pieces from the overall construct. I agree with your assessment on "Causeway" but it's strange to me that you don't see how elements are weaving in and out of the first two tracks."

"It wouldn't be a 10/10 if it was shorter. The length is integral to the experience of lulling you beyond considering time."

On s3sh's review of Xiu Xiu - Ignore Grief
"Come on man, I can understand where this perspective comes from, but it's sad to see people that wouldn't try to understand the art for what it is than for what their preconceptions of art would dictate for them to believe. Abstract art is art for a reason and its worth exploring why this album is the way it is or at least being able to formulate substantial criticisms for others to contend with instead of offering a statement so broad and dismissive that it begs to be replied too. Just sort of expressing some views the review conjured and not trying to make you feel worthless or express any kind of personal hatred :)"
On Echoesanywhere's review of Andrew Hill - Compulsion
"This review is a great example of reviewing abstract/difficult works of art. Following the music through its patterns (emotional, structural, musical) it reveals the core of what the art is and it doesn't have to be so impossible to define or require knowledge on music theory. The real key I've found is to just really tune yourself into the sound and what it's doing between all the musicians. It will speak to you."

"Sounds really interesting! What mountain goats records would you recommend?"
On DAVECHER's review of Stan Getz & João Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
"I wish the bland recommended jazz had the same degree of warmth in the production & sensory depth in each instrument. Getz sax work is especially stupendous, take O’Grande Amour where he spends most of his time in hushed breath yet the whole thing is so playfully emotional. Making that first and final push at the end so impactful."

"I love this review and it's a style that I try to grasp when constricting certain reviews of mine, but rarely capture it as well as you do here. Less a checklist of good and bad qualities and instead you paint a picture of the records character and quality from within. Lovely stuff and my favorite review I've read this year."
