Valtos - Valtos
80

The first record from the highly promising, Isle of Skye-based duo is a luxurious path through the Scottish landscape. It’s full of personality and a sense of proudness of the roots of traditional Scottish music. The fusion with modern electronic textures is effortless and the two juxtaposing genres coalesce extremely well. The melodies are quite simple yet provoking and enjoyable whilst the Gaelic language used throughout adds another dimension to this glossy LP. Really great debut album ... read more

Milky Chance - Sadnecessary
95

This is a bit of a different review and i'd appreciate it if you gave this your patience for just two minutes. Just hit 50 followers so I thought i'd give my take on something that i've thought about regularly but never seen people talk about too often. This album title is perfect to link into the topic and this record just happens to be one of favourite albums of all time.

Sadness is necessary in life whether you want it to be or not. I highy doubt if anyone will get past the age of 18 and ... read more

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
100

In my eyes this is The Beatles greatest body of work and it's one of the most stand-alone albums ever made. Revolver leaned heavily into the psychedelic sounds that they used iconicly but Sgt Peppers just twisted their sound into a mystical, colourful and extremely addictive adventure of songs. The lyrics here just fit so well with this concept of a struggling, unhappy band trying to find their feet in the music industry and even without the concept they just resonate so well in the context of ... read more

Primal Scream - Screamadelica
70

I can see why this was so groundbreaking when it first came out as it fuses together acid house, dance and psychedlia in a complex yet accessible way. Start of the 90's so the whole of this kind of sound/ genre was just springing up out of the ground and this album became a beacon for many bands. However, listening to this in 2021 when many bands and artists have delved deeper into crossing these genres such as Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses, it just doesn't carry the same weight. It doesn't ... read more

Fatboy Slim - Palookaville
70

If you don't like messy, unconstrained albums then don't listen to this. Fatboy has taken everything from garage rock to african infused house and constructed a record with no limits on genre exploration. However, it backfires in parts as it's so hard to grasp the overall vibe of this album due to the ever-changing rhythms and soundscapes. Dull at times with injections of energy and funkiness give this a very awkward standing as i'm unsure on whether it's good and has its moments or is plain ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
100

The Godfather of all rap albums ever. Praise be to the butterfly that got pimped, he/she is the reason this album is so great.

MF DOOM - MM..FOOD

Q: How can an album based on the concept of food be so incredible?
A: MF DOOM

Paul McCartney - McCartney III Imagined
50

Ahhh hate to give a legend such a shit score but honestly none of these songs will stick with me and i'll forget he ever made this album in a year's time. A few of the songs including Phoebe's and Beck's remixes are palatable but the rest leave so much to be desired. When you bring such a diverse array of talent onto remix a bland, hard-to-save record it's never going to propel it to great heights. End of the road for Paul it looks like, Thankyou for all the music.

David Bowie - ★ [Blackstar]
85

I'm sure every review of this album will say the same but Bowie's direction for this record is so confrontational of his mental state and health at this point near the end of his life that it holds such power as a record. Personally, i'm so glad i love this album as it's such a fitting end to a beautiful life and glittering career spanning 6 decades. He cited his influences as Kendrick and Death Grips for this album and these honestly can be heard throughout with David putting his own twist on ... read more

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
100

Iconic British album!! This record is littered with anthems that are made for belting out at a gaff or nightclub when you're steaming. Liam's swagger shines through in almost every tune with his streched, abrasive voice chanting out the optimistic and wonderfully crafted lyrics. Liam takes centre stage but Noel is the driving force behind the rock 'n' roll of the guitar and the lyrics, which are near perfect for what you want out of an Oasis album. The classics are piled up in this record ... read more

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
85

Such a unique experience in which Johnny's personality shines through in between songs. A wonderful mix of bluesy rock and jangly acoustic country ballads.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
90

If Pitchfork give an album an 84 you know it's pretty fucking good. I just love this album from head to toe, the sonic soundscapes and jangly guitar riffs just put me in a happy place whilst the whole structure of the album is designed to drag you into this emphatic creation. Fight test is possibly one of the greatest openers to an album and is followed by bizzare yet beautiful tracks littered with fuzzy, psychedelic textures that lay out this concept that The Flaming Lips have based this LP on.

Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
85

Daniel Dumile AKA DOOM/King Geedorah/Viktor Vaughan just demonstrates that he was the most versatile rapper the world had seen. His unmatched creative genius formed yet another alias here and once again became the villain of the story. This record contains some of his best vocal performances as his voice sounds clearer and more freer than on his numerous other projects. The dizzying, fanatical production set the tone for amazing flows (as always), a variety of features including Open mic nite's ... read more

Gorillaz - The Fall
50

Damon created The Fall on an iPad whilst on tour in North America so i've got to take that into consideration partly. However, I wish Damon had just released this as a solo project and not under the Gorillaz moniker as it's such an unnecessary record to have in a brilliantly diverse and grand discography. Made up of unusual sounds and ideas, The Fall doesn't really have it's own personality and therefore I just can't connect to this album or see the point in it. You can tell Damon was just ... read more

Fishmans - 空中キャンプ [Kūchū Camp]
65

A wonderfully dreamy album filled with sunny guitar melodies wafting over the gentle piano and the warm, welcoming vocals. This is a record designed to be enjoyed on a summer day. So light and easy to listen to it's a sad-happy vibe that makes you feel comforted and content instead of melancholy.
Best Tracks: Well, Track 1 and Track 6 on the album (It's in Japanese)

BROCKHAMPTON - ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE
85

THE BOYS ARE BACK!!! Best album since Saturation 3 as they lift themselves out of the 'sad boys' hole that they were in with iridescence and GINGER. They were both decent albums in their own right but they didn't have the wow factor and OOMPH that ROADRUNNER has in abundance. The energy and flows and the clean switch-ups in the vocal delivery gives this album a very fresh appeal as well as being littered with bangers throughout. Brilliant verses from all of the vocalists with Kevin and Merlyn ... read more

Genesis Owusu - Smiling With No Teeth
85

Fuck yes!!!! A death grips rip off to open with, bouncy, energetic grooves and funky beats galore....what more can you want. There's such a wide array of genres crammed into this album it would be hard to get it to work well as a single project but Genesis does it to a tee. Themes of overfishing, african-american culture and depression as a metaphorical black dog are pivotal subjects that he worked into the album implicity and cleverly. Every song had it's only unique flavour that just pulled ... read more

Gorillaz - The Now Now
75

2017 and 2018 were strange timez for Gorillaz discography, as Humanz didn't make the waves that Damon would've wanted it to and then the most stripped-back, casual Gorillaz album dropped the following year, The Now Now. This seems like a reactive album as a criticism from fans was that Humanz didn't have 2D on the record, so what does Damon do.....makes a whole record with 2D as the start, middle and end point. This album is very accessible for someone wanting a more lo-fi, straightforward ... read more

Peatbog Faeries - Blackhouse
75

Welcome to the world of Scottish dub-reggae funk all performed with haunting bagpipes, crescendoing drums and swirling, psychedelic guitars. This is an energy-filled record from the heart of Scotland which i gurantee you will have heard nothing like this ever before. Give it a listen, you could be pleasently surprised. Also, give The Folk Police a listen.
Best Tracks: The Dragon's Apprentice, Spiders, Is this your son?

Just a classic album really. Nirvana and Kurt at their best, sadly ever (RIP legend). Slightly better than In Utero which is a much heavier and rawer album. Nevermind is well-refined, grungey but also rhythmic in Nirvana's own niche way that they came to own and become the kings of. Banger after banger fills this modern punk record and it's such a charismatic, colourful blend of acoustic and heavy rock with Kurt's voice taking you along for the ride of your life.
