AWOLNATION - Megalithic Symphony
45

Aaron Bruno is legitimately a good songwriter when he wants to be. When he hits the nail in the coffin and knocks it out of the park, he does so with oodles of swagger and fun. However, this debut album is stuffed to the brim with filler. There's so much filler here that it's almost painful to listen to at points. Again, there are good, even excellent tracks here, but the whole record comes off as bland, forgettable and washed out by the end of it's lengthy runtime (2 hours if your listening to ... read more

AWOLNATION - Run
43

The great songs on this album are legitimately some of the greatest power pop songs i've heard all year. This "group" has a knack for having fun, enjoyable songs that stick in your head months after hearing it. However, when it comes to the full record, it simply has too much filler and studio stuffing for repeated listens. I love about half of this record, and I can't remember the other half.

Favorite Jams: Dreamers, Hallow Moon (Bad Wolf), KOOKSEVERYWHERE!!!!

AWOLNATION - Here Come the Runts
40

While the tone and themes of this record are a lot more consistent on AWOLNATIONs new booming record, the same problem that this "groups" is the same problem that has plagued AWOLNATION from the start: Too much damn filler.

Favorite Jams: Here Come the Runts, Miracle Man, Stop That Train

Lest Favorite: A Little Luck and a Couple of Dogs

Rush - Power Windows
75

Not reaching the heights of Grace Under Pressure, however that doesn't make the record that bad. It's one of the more accessible synth records Rush has put out, if not one of the lest interesting of the bands discography.

Favorite Jams: Marathon, The Big Money, Mystic Rythems

Lest Favorite: Middletown Dreams

72

While experimental and thought provoking, this feels like more of a film then it does an album. I feel like if this was treated as The Wall and had a film component to go along with the record, then this would feel a lot stronger. But for what it's worth, this record is still another interesting and entertaining prog record.

Favorite Jams: Running Shoes, Go Fishing, The Moment of Clarity

Lest Favorite: Sexual Revolution

Rush - Grace Under Pressure
80

Often overlooked by many Rush fans as being yet another synth record, Grace Under Pressure is, at lest in my eyes, one of Rush's many classic albums. It's got the synth swagger of Signals put through the tight song writing of the rest of their discography, and it's a trip you'll want to take again and again, with some of Rush's best tracks on display here.

Favorite Jams: Distant Early Warning, The Body Electric, Red Lenses

Lest Favorite: Between The Wheels

Rush - Signals
85

Rush have always had a fascination with synths and new-wave technology in their previous records, but here it's at the forefront and it's unavoidable. It's different yes, but is it bad? Hell no. Rush's songwriting and instrumentation is still top notch, and the synths add to Rush's already creative sound, giving yet another dimension to rush that many haven't seen before.

Favorite Jams: Losing It, Digital Man, New World Man

Lest Favorite: The Weapon

Rush - Moving Pictures
85

This is Rush at their most tight, their most creative, their most to the point, and, to some, their best. It's all the experimentation and off the wall prog moments of their more experimental records while still maintaining that sense of true grit rock and roll that started them off, with a more loving relationship with synths shown in the last album. An essential for any rock fan.

Favorite Jams: YYZ, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta

Lest Favorite: The Camera Eye

Rush - Permanent Waves
90

In a lot of ways, the experimentation that was in the the last three Rush records still thrives here. But it's not experimental in the sense that it's firing off on all cylinders. No, this is Rush experimentation with how to limit themselves and create one of the greatest rock records ever made. And by god they found a way. Absolutely one of my favorite Rush records.

Favorite Jams: Jacobs Ladder, The Spirit Of Radio, Entre Nous

Lest Favorite: Different Strings

89

Saying that "On this record, Rush goes full experimental" for Hemispheres is like saying the sky is blue. The track lengths can tell you that. But what it doesn't tell you is how absolutely crunchy, precise and mind-boggingly stupifying the tracks are.

Favorite Jams: Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise in Self-Indulgence), The Trees

Lest Favorite: Circumstances

Rush - A Farewell to Kings
81

How do you top one of the greatest prog-rock albums of all time? By making another classic record, with Rush creating a dense, electrifying and grand record that stands the test of time as being one of Rush's most creatively interesting records to date.

Favorite Jams: Xanadu, Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage, Closer To The Heart

Lest Favorite: Cinderella Man

Goblin - Suspiria
85

One of the most fun to listen to, complex, entertaining, off the wall, insane and interesting film scores of the 70s, aiding one of the more interesting, breath-taking and fun horror films of all time.

Favorite Jams: Suspiria, Black Forest, Blind Forest

Lest Favorite: Witch

Rush - Caress of Steel
66

This album was a risk. It was the definition of a risk, introducing more complex, prog-rock elements into their sound, making the music less accessible, but still entertaining and fun to listen to. And in a lot of ways that experimentation paid off. However, compared to their later releases, it's just a stepping stone into what Rush could produce.

Favorite Jams: The Necromancer, The Fountain of Lamneth, Bastille Day

Lest Favorite: I Think I'm Going Bald

Rush - Fly by Night
63

If you were underwhelmed or not that interested in Rush after listening to their self-titled album, then may I present to you a much better, more interesting, more dense and much more entertaining listen in Fly By Night, if not incredibly inconsistent.

Favorite Jams: Best I Can, By-Tor and The Snow Dog, Anthem

Lest Favorite: Making Memories

Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire
92

This isn't an album to be taken lightly. This album, most defiantly, is dangerous. It's Rage Against The Machines loudest, angriest, most to the point, and most deadly album to date. And it's destructive to watch, in the best way possible.

Favorite Jams: Tire Me, Bulls on Parade, Snakecharmer

Lest Favorite: Wind Below

Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles
97

This album isn't an album. It's an extremely dangerous bomb. An album that succeeds in being loud, abrasive, accessible and defiant as all hell, all while making the music engaging, thought provoking, interesting and damn fun. Yet another classic from RATM.

Favorite Jams: Guerrilla Radio, Calm Like A Bomb, Born Of A Broken Man

Lest Favorites: New Millennium Homes

Rage Against the Machine - Renegades
74

Look, I love Rage Against The Machine as much as the next edgy white boy. But as a music fan, I gotta come clean: I hate cover albums. I'd rather hear an album that's comprised of all original music rather then music that was created by other people. However, RATM do bring on a group of pretty good covers on their sadly final record.

Favorite Jams: Maggies Farm, Beautiful World, Microphone Fiend

Lest Favorite: The Ghost of Tom Joad

Black Sabbath - Sabotage
66

Black Sabbath, as many bands do eventually, hit a creative peak in this record. It's a fun record, a really fun record in fact, but that's about it. It's a fun, entertaining diversion, but when talking about Black bloody Sabbath, that's not the greatest praise.

Favorite Jams: Symptom of the Universe, Hole in the Sky, The Writ

Lest Favorite: Don't Start (Too Late)

74

This is Sabbath trying to find the limit to the amount of experimentation, the amount of complexity's, and the amount of fun Sabbath can have making music. And the limit is that there is no limit.

Favorite Jams: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Killing Yourself to live, Spiral Architext

Lest Favorite: Looking for Today

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Vol. 4
78

While not the groundbreaking metal record that the last two Black Sabbath records were, they still contain some of metals greatest tunes, with Sabbath really experimenting with their already expansive sound. Oh, and cocaine.

Favorite Jams: Supernaut, Changes, Wheels Of Confusion/The Straightener

Lest Favorite: FX

"@SamHatedSBTH Joy as an Act of Resistance is an absolute essential record, so that's probably where i'd direct a newcomer. If they like that album then its down to what they really liked from it: - If they want something more raw, go with Brutalism - If they want something more catchy, go Ultra Mono - If they loved the songwriting and emotional moments, go Crawler And once they've bounced around, TANGK is a culmination of new sounds that help the band go towards the future. Best of luck!"

"@chell_6 for me a lot of GSY!BE's work has an amazing emotional first listen but I find it hard to come back a lot of times (exceptions being Allelujah and Slow Riot). While I still love listening to this record, and adore how dense it is, now I'm more acquainted with the band and Post-Rock music, it just didn't feel right to have at a 100. Still, a great album!"

"Honestly it's got some of their better poppier stuff in a little bit (at least since Cool Patrol which has now dawned on me came out 6 years ago) but going back to the Strawberries And Cream era writing is a choice. Kinda wished that they stuck with the Prog Band about Dick Jokes they carved out on The Prophecy honestly"
