If you're willing to really settle in and dig, there are some gems beyond Midnight City, but whether or not it's worth it will probably continue to be a divisive question.
It's a compelling sound, even if its sonic potential isn't fully exploited by the band, and their publicity antics obscure the quality of the music they present in a rather ham-fisted way.
I admire the album's concepts, themes, and messages, but God does listening to this make me nauseous. Perhaps that's the point, that there is no such thing as harmonious co-existence in the plight of a people whose existence is characterized by struggle, but I do have to say that it also doesn't tend to make for very compelling music. I do sincerely hope Congratulations comes to be recognized as one of the under looked treasures in the history of pop music of the 2010's. MGMT certainly presaged the nihilism and dissatisfaction with instant gratification and fleeting feelings of everyone's 15 minutes that would come to dominate youth culture over the course of the decade, perhaps in a more nuanced fashion than Kanye did on MBDTF. While I certainly think Salem were the first to the table of somber, sample-heavy, moody electronic projects whose soundscapes would come to dominate a particular music-listening demographic of the 2010's, I also don't think much of what they present on this album serves as a particularly meaty reference point for many artists who would come to explore the same sounds in much more engaging and lively way.
