I honestly could not give less of a fuck that Clairo is an industry plant, because that really has no bearing on the quality of music she makes imho.
That being said, this record is also pretty trash and immensely disappointing, and this is coming from someone who loved Bags and Sofia, two of the lead up singles to this record. Unfortunately, Clairo doesn't really capitalize on the moody sense of longing her music has the capability of conjuring to create a truly personal and intimate album ... read more
Like the sound of sirens themselves, Jaar's music is both piercing and musical, striking yet elegant.
Yeah man it's not the most original tape around the block, but YBN Cordae shows charisma on the mic and genuinely sounds like he likes rapping for the hell of it, something I haven't really heard a rapper convey so effortlessly since Lil Yachty's Lil' Boat.
I know Chance is a true Kanye protege because he announced an album and then didn't drop it.
EDIT: I don't care anymore. It's fuck Pitchfork season.
Production's great. Bars are fine. But something's just... off. And I know it isn't the fact that Chance is in a better place now career-wise and has outgrown rapping about drugs and fucking around. That's fine. It's the fact that Chance has resorted to creating a squeaky clean pop rap album devoid of any real feeling and intimacy. And it's not ... read more
Although at times a bit overproduced and melodramatic, The Sailor is ultimately a lively celebration of the storied tradition of hip-hop, one that looks to the past while simultaneously beckoning to a future where Asian kids can do whatever the hell they want.
not experimental enough
EDIT: yeah nvm I can't take it this shit sucks balls
FUUUUUUUCK THE GUARDIAN HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
Devonté Hynes carries forward the contemporary trend of scrapbook-like albums and connects together disparate pieces of his artistry in his characteristically enveloping, ethereal, and moody way. Can't wait for a more fleshed out record, but these pieces will give me enough to mull over, laid over like the man on the album cover, until the right time comes.
What an abso-fucking-lutely phenomenally, enthralling experience. This is a raw, potent, enveloping expression of musical talent and achievement.
Getting warmer Jaden.
After two of the worst pieces of music the popular music landscape has seen in recent memory (I'm talking of course about the Sunset Tapes and the very subtly named ERYS IS COMING), Jaden sees fit to return to an aesthetic he first explored on SYRE, with grandiose and expensive-sounding production mixed with auto-tune and reverb soaked vocals. While literally no one on the planet has yet to give a single, solitary fuck about whatever the hell SYRE purports to be about, I ... read more
I know plenty of people during my music history course days who were quite dismissive of minimalism and the fervor with which critics tend to treat it. But when I hear Music for 18 Musicians, I’m reminded of something visceral that music does that I think no other artistic medium quite captures. I think it’s the invocation of one, and generally only one, of the senses that makes music so powerful, and Reich’s magnum opus forces that thesis upon listeners front and center. ... read more
I GUESS YOU COULD SAY THIS THING "SIZZLES" OUT AFTER THE FIRST TRACK AhaHAHhaHAhHAHhahHAHahHAHhahHA
In all seriousness, I had a great time! I can see that extended repetitive passages may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love a good piece of repetitive electronic music, and there's just enough detailing just underneath the surface to keep more intent listeners busy. While the sonic palette could be a little more diverse, Sizzling is still brimming with personality and should not ... read more
Not nearly as enticing as Peggy Gou's long string of EP's we've seen so far, Peggy Gou's handling of the DJ-Kicks mantle feels at times bloated, other times like it's struggling to find its own groove. As far as making a case for her diverse influences, many of which I feel shine much brighter in the context of her EP work, Gou doesn't do the most interesting things with them to keep the listener engaged throughout her mix. Hungboo remains a standout from this mix, and the only true ... read more
